Luckily the drive-in where they are at has a car repair shop, that has a car pit in which they could seek shelter. This is the only safe place they have at their disposal.

2. What does the crew use to give Dorothy's sensors extra lift?

Answer: soda cans

Jo comes up with this idea when her aunt's house falls to the ground and she sees her wind chimes that have the swirl pattern. Bill sees what she is talking about and goes along with it. The cans will give Dorothy's orbs the lift they need to get sucked up into the tornado.
