Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film began with a young Carl Fredrickson at a newsreel about his great hero, Charles Muntz. After the newsreel, he met another adventurer/fan, Ellie. Where did young Ellie dream of going?

Answer: Paradise Falls

Paradise Falls was adventurer Muntz's adventuring grounds. It was a place filled with fossils of a large variety of creatures that he donated to museums. He fell from his high pedestal when experts claimed that one set of fossils was faked. He left, vowing to bring back a live creature to prove it existed. Ellie, the Muntz fan, naturally wanted to go to the land of her hero.

She created a scrapbook for her adventures which she shared with Carl. Carl promised to take Ellie to Paradise Falls someday. On a side note, Paradise Falls is apparently located in South America.
2. Naturally, Carl and Ellie grew up and got married. Which of the following was not an episode shown of their life?

Answer: Birth of their daughter

Carl and Ellie bought the old, ramshackle house that they had once used to play adventures in. They put their hand prints on the mailbox, making it a special memory for Carl after Ellie's death. They had a special hill where they would picnic and watch clouds.

While Ellie became pregnant once, she lost the baby. The two still dreamed of going to Paradise Falls, but money was needed for other things. Eventually an older Carl bought plane tickets, but Ellie died before they could use them.
3. After Ellie's death, Carl found Russell intruding on his porch offering to help him. Why did Russell really want to help Carl?

Answer: He wanted to earn a badge as a wilderness explorer.

Russell's great ambition was to become a senior wilderness explorer, and he only needed one more badge: assisting the elderly. Carl was not amused but instead sent Russell on a snipe hunt. A snipe hunt is another term for a wild goose chase, but Russell did not know this. Russell later confided that his real reason to become a senior wilderness explorer is so that his now absent father would come to the ceremony.

The older Carl was voiced by Ed Asner.
4. Carl eventually decided to pursue Ellie's dream. What was the final cause that motivated him to actually go?

Answer: He was going to be put in a retirement home.

Carl stubbornly held onto the Frederickson dream house despite hungry developers aching for his land. With construction going on all around him, one worker accidentally damaged his beloved mailbox. Angry Carl hit the man with his cane which led to the developers insisting on putting him in a home. Carl tricked the retirement home workers by making his house airborne with the help of a multitude of helium balloons. During his working days, he had sold balloons and other trinkets at the zoo. John Ratzenberger, who has been called Pixar's good luck charm, voiced one of the construction workers.
5. As Carl traveled along his way, he discovered Russell had accidentally stowed away and brought him on his trip. While attempting to move the home, Russell met a large, colorful bird. What did he name the bird?

Answer: Kevin

Kevin was very fond of chocolate and instantly bonded with Russell, who loved his new pet. Kevin was very fast but apparently could not fly. Kevin later turned out to be a she and a mother. She was eager to find food for her young who lived in a twisted, rocky labyrinth. Carl insisted that Russell could not keep Kevin. All the other answers are from other Pixar movies. Nemo was a fish in 'Finding Nemo'. Buzz was the space man hero in 'Toy Story' and its sequels. Wally is what the robot's name sounded like in 'Wall*E'.
6. The bird latched onto Carl's and Russell's expedition, and then they ran into a dog. What was unusual about this dog?

Answer: He could talk.

Dug, as the dog was called, informed Carl and Russell, that his collar gave him the ability to speak. His master had outfitted him with the collar along with the rest of the pack of dogs. Dug politely asked to take Kevin prisoner. The rest of the pack had names from the Greek alphabet. Alpha was the pack leader. Both Alpha and Dug were voiced by Pixar stand-by Bob Peterson. Delroy Lindo gave Beta his voice.
7. Charles Muntz was revealed to be still alive and in control of the pack of dogs. Where did he live?

Answer: On a blimp

The blimp, called the Spirit of Adventure, was first seen in the opening sequence with the news reel. Despite the years, it was still in perfect working order. Muntz graciously invited Carl and Russell to come dine on food cooked by Epsilon. Russell received a hot dog but lost it to the dog pack. Charles Muntz got his voice from Christopher Plummer.
8. While Muntz was Carl's childhood hero, Carl quickly learned that Muntz was now a villain. Which of the following was NOT one of his villainous acts?

Answer: Shot Dug

After all these years, Muntz was still obsessed with capturing the beast that experts claimed was fictional. This turned out to be Kevin. He captured Kevin by distracting Carl by setting the floating house on fire. He saved the house but not Kevin. When Carl refused to go rescue Kevin, Russell attempted to try himself. Unfortunately Russell was caught, and Muntz nearly threw him out of the blimp. Fortunately Carl was there to rescue Russell and later Kevin.
9. While Carl faced off with his old hero, Dug was forced to confront his fears with Alpha. Which action did Dug do that caused the other dogs to denounce Alpha as their leader?

Answer: Put the cone of shame on Alpha

The cone of shame was the cone given to dogs from veterinarians to keep them from chewing stitches out or similar behavior. Alpha had previously put the cone of shame on Dug to demean him. Once the cone of shame was on Alpha, the dogs immediately called Dug, Alpha. Alpha's voice control also broke down, but it had so earlier in the film.

At that time, the dogs only made fun of the voice but still respected Alpha.
10. Russell became a senior explorer.

Answer: True

While Russell's father did not attend, Carl was there for the ceremony and pinned on the special pin Ellie had given him. Carl became a father figure for Russell. The happy ending also included the dogs, especially Dug, finding a home with Carl, and the house found its way to the top of Paradise Falls.
