Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he says, "The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous"?

Answer: Evie Hammond

V introduces himself to Evie after rescuing her from the finger men who attacked her. This is at the start of the film and is our first impression of V, and also when we learn that V has several scores to settle. After his self-introduction, which contains 28 words starting with the letter "V", he carves a large letter "V" on a government poster on the wall.

He says and does this to show that the letter "V" - and his vendetta - are central to his persona.
2. In "V for Vendetta", who was V talking to when he said, "I must say, I'm rather astonished by the response time of London's finest"?

Answer: Dominic

In his TV address moments earlier, V foreshadows the arrival of the police when he claims that "men with guns will soon be on their way". Not long after V takes over the control room, police swarm the building. As V prepares to leave Jordan Tower, he is surprised by Dominic who holds him at gunpoint for several seconds before he is pepper-sprayed by Evie Hammond.

This allows V to overpower Dominic and escape. The quote is delivered rather disdainfully, indicating V's contempt for the police.
3. Who is V talking to in the film "V for Vendetta", when he says, "At last, we finally meet. I have something for you... a farewell gift. For all the things you've done, for the things you might have done, and for the only thing you have left"?

Answer: Adam Sutler

V says this after Creedy's men deliver High Chancellor Sutler to him in an abandoned underground station. The "gift" V is referring to is a scarlet carson, the flower he leaves with the bodies of each of his victims. V sees Sutler as the main cause for the state of the country and this meeting is anticipated throughout the film.
4. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he says, "Spare the rod..."?

Answer: One of the finger men

When Evie heads out to Gordon Dietrich's house after curfew begins, she is set upon and intimidated by a group of policemen, or "finger men" as they are known in the film. One of them uses the line with Evie when they overpower her and V, in turn, uses it mockingly with him when he rescues her. We learn later in the film that V has been subject to torture and abuse whilst an inmate at Larkhill Detention Centre, hence his dislike of the values espoused in the above quote.

The scene itself was shot in Berlin, although it was set in London.
5. To whom is V speaking in the film "V for Vendetta" when he says, "The only thing that you and I have in common... is we're both about to die"?

Answer: Mr. Creedy

When Creedy and his armed escort of 12 men surround V in an underground station, V makes it clear that he will fight till the end, prompting Creedy to say, "You're not afraid of death. You're like me". This is certainly not how V sees it and this is what prompts the retort.

The fact V is surrounded by armed men and has only knives adds a sense of anticipation when the quote is delivered. Mr. Creedy is the last of the individuals V specifically targets in his vendetta.
6. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he says, "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people"?

Answer: Evie Hammond

V is talking to Evie in the "Shadow Gallery" about the principles of governance. This quote by V echoes Thomas Jefferson's statement, "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty". In England at the time the film is set, everybody fears the government to such an extent that people no longer say or do anything that could cause any offense.

This quote is an important expression of one of V's core beliefs.
7. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he introduces himself as, "The Ghost of Christmas past"?

Answer: Lewis Prothero

V uses Evie Hammond's ID pass to break into Prothero's apartment while he is taking a shower. Unbeknownst to Prothero, at first, he had met (and mistreated) V many years before, while V was an inmate at Larkhill Detention Centre. He becomes doubly afraid moments later when he discovers who the masked man in his bathroom actually is.

In this way, the "ghost of Christmas past" is actually an aspect of Prothero's past he had been trying to forget.
8. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he says, "I killed you ten minutes ago"?

Answer: Delia Surridge

Delia Surridge wakes up to find V in her bedroom. As many of the staff at the former Larkhill Detention Centre had been recently killed, Surridge had been expecting V to come for her. In the detention centre, she had experimented on inmates (including V) for research purposes.

After she asks, "Are you going to kill me now?" V shows her a hypodermic needle and delivers the line above. V kills each of his victims in the film by poisoning them. He had already injected Surridge with poison moments before.

The use of a hypodermic needle is significant because Surridge had used needles to infect inmates at Larkhill with a deadly virus for research purposes.
9. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he says, "Fear became the ultimate tool of this government. And through it our politician was ultimately appointed to the newly created position of High Chancellor. The rest, as they say, is history"?

Answer: Inspector Finch and Dominic

V is disguised as William Rookwood when he meets Inspector Finch and Dominic to give details of the plot behind the St. Mary's crisis. The reason V does this is to bargain for the 24-hour suveillance of Mr. Creedy, which in turn allows him to convince Creedy to turn against Chancellor Sutler.

Although Finch and Dominic don't know it at the time, Rookwood has already been dead for 20 years. Interestingly, A man named William Rookwood was also one of Guy Fawkes' co-conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot. V wears a Guy Fawkes mask in the film.
10. In the film "V for Vendetta", who is V talking to when he says, "If the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot"?

Answer: Everyone; he said it in a TV address

Early in the film, V takes over Jordan Tower and forces the BTN technicians to air a pre-prepared message on the emergency channel, which means it will be viewable on every TV set in London and override regular programming. Everybody in London with a TV set watches V's anti-government message, which protests repression, the restriction of personal freedom and abuse of judicial power.

This message outlines V's plan to blow up parliament on November the 5th, as Guy Fawkes had attempted to do over 400 years earlier. V has the staff play his message and then makes them all don Guy Fawkes masks so that he can more easily conceal his escape.
