Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which excellent film of the late 1980s features appearances by such historical notables as Al Capone, Frank Nitti and Eliot Ness?

Answer: The Untouchables

'The Untouchables' is the story of crusading federal agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) who is on the trail of Chicago's most notorious gangster, Al Capone (Robert De Niro). Ness must wade through the most insidious individuals in the Chicago underworld, including the slithering Frank Nitti (Billy Drago) before finally confronting the nefarious Capone.
2. In one of the most bizarre films of all-time, characters such as Craig Schwartz, Maxine Lund, and John Malkovich, appear. What is the title of this journey into madness?

Answer: Being John Malkovich

Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) is a puppeteer who somehow discovers a portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich (himself, of course!). Maxine Lund (Catherine Keener) is a colleague of Schwartz' who capitalizes on the mind of John Malkovich for a cheap buck, and also uses John Malkovich to get closer to Schwartz's wife. Weird enough for you? I thought so...
3. Lara Antipova, Victor Komarovsky and Tonya are just some of the fantastic characters in this deep epic that explores universal emotions such as love, loyalty and honor. What is the name of this cinematic classic?

Answer: Doctor Zhivago

'Doctor Zhivago' is a film that follows the life of Dr. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) as he makes his way through some of the most difficult years of the Russian Revolution. Lara Antipova (Julie Christie) plays the woman he loves, despite the fact that he is married to Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin). Victor Komarovsky (Rod Steiger) is the cruel rival of Dr. Zhivago who, though sometimes brutal and ruthless, also harbors a great love for Lara.
4. Which classic film noir features Holly Martins, Major Calloway and Harry Lime, all involved in a strange mystery that involves the disappearance of the latter?

Answer: The Third Man

'The Third Man' features Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), an American ex-patriot who has been summoned to Vienna by his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), only to find that the latter has apparently died in an auto accident. Martins believes something fishy has occurred, and despite the better advice of Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), a British officer of the post-war occupation, he moves foward with a personal investigation into the matter.
5. Remember characters named Captain Benjamin L. Willard, Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore and Colonel Walter E. Kurtz? In which hard hitting Vietnam War-related film did they appear?

Answer: Apocalypse Now

1979's 'Apocalypse Now' is the story of an army captain named Willard (Martin Sheen) who has been assigned to retrieve a wayward colonel surnamed Kurtz (Marlon Brando). During his mission up the Mekong River, Willard encounters one strange scenario after another, including a visit with Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall), a man who loves the smell of napalm in the morning.
6. Which incredibly powerful human drama features characters such as the evil Amon Goeth, the vulnerable Helen Hirsch and Itzhak Stern, a representative of hope?

Answer: Schindler's List

'Schindler's List' tells the tale of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who helps save the lives of over a thousand Jewish people in Poland during World War II. Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) serves as Schindler's accountant and preserver of the 'list'. Ralph Fiennes portrays Amon Goeth, the wicked commandant of the Nazi death camp at which the Schindler Jews reside, and Embeth Davidtz plays Helen Hirsch, a Jewish woman who is selected as a personal servant to Goeth.
7. Jedediah Leland, Susan Alexander and Charles Foster Kane are three of the characters from what timeless film classic?

Answer: Citizen Kane

Many have chosen 'Citizen Kane', the story of a wealthy man who has everything he needs, everything, that is except for love, as their top film of all time. It stars Orson Welles as Charles Foster Kane, the lead character around whom the story revolves, Joseph Cotten as Jedediah Leland, Kane's best friend and Dorothy Comingore as Susan Alexander, Kane's second wife.

This movie is an essential for every serious DVD collection.
8. Which Academy Award winning film features such individuals as Emperor Joseph II, Emanuel Schikaneder and Antonio Salieri among its stellar cast of characters?

Answer: Amadeus

Amadeus tells the story of Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), a jealous victim of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's incredible talent and notoriety. Despite Salieri's ambition for fame, his music is always overshadowed by that of Mozart. For this he vows ultimate revenge. Jeffrey Jones plays the rather bumbling Austrian Emperor Joseph II, who inadvertently helps drive a wedge between Salieri and Mozart with his favor of the latter. Emanuel Schikaneder (Simon Callow) is a friend of Mozart's who commissions Mozart's final opera, and unintentionally helps drive his comrade to his untimely death.
9. In which magnificent film does the aging actress Margo Channing struggle against the connivances of theater critic Addison DeWitt and up-and-coming schemer/actress Eve Harrington?

Answer: All About Eve

Margo Channing (Bette Davis) is an aging actress whose light is fading, while Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) is a nobody with stars in her eyes. Sparks fly as their stars cross, with Channing's career disintegrating and Harrington finding newfound fame and acclaim.

This is in no small part because of the efforts of Addison DeWitt (George Sanders), a film critic who knows how to manipulate the public.
10. A cynical Los Angeles police officer surnamed Ryan, a television director named Cameron and an Iranian-American store owner named Farhad are just some of the many characters that grace the screen in which complicated and socially critical film?

Answer: Crash

It's difficult to summarize the plot of 'Crash' in a few short sentences, but the gist of the plot revolves around several individuals from various ethnic backgrounds whose lives coincide around an automobile accident that occurs in Los Angeles. Officer Ryan (Matt Dillon), though suffering from racism, involves himself in saving the life of a woman who he had previously molested. Cameron (Terrence Howard) is the husband of this woman, a successful black producer who feels disempowered by the system. Farhad (Shaun Toub) is a store owner whose own racist feelings compel him to violently confront an Hispanic man who he has hired to change the locks on the doors at his place of business.
