Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ___ Candles

Answer: 16

Remember the films of the 1980s? "Sixteen Candles" was one of those typical teen 'coming of age' movies, written and directed by John Hughes. The film stars Molly Ringwald as Samantha whose 16th birthday is coming up. Adolescent love and worries about chastity are among Samantha's concerns. Also, to top it off, her sister is getting married and, amidst all the confusion, her family forgets Samantha's big day.
2. ___ Per-Cent Solution

Answer: 7

"The Seven-Per-Cent Solution" is a 1976 movie based on the novel by Nicholas Meyer. The subtitle of the book is "Being a Reprint from the Reminiscences of John H. Watson M.D.". The story describes how Dr. Watson (Robert Duvall) thinks his friend and associate, Sherlock Holmes (Nicol Williamson), is delusional, due to his addiction to cocaine, i.e. a seven percent solution. Watson does not believe Moriarty (Lawrence Olivier) is a criminal mastermind and he gets Holmes to travel to Vienna to be treated by Sigmund Freud.
3. ___ Days at Peking

Answer: 55

The Boxer Rebellion of 1900 is the setting for the 1963 movie "55 Days at Peking". The historical film dramatizes the Battle of Peking, a turning point of the rebellion. Charlton Heston stars as Major Matt Lewis, a member of the US Marines. He helps defend against the Chinese secret societies, save the foreigners and romance a lovely Russian Baroness played by Ava Gardner.
4. ___ O'Clock High

Answer: 12

Back to black and white... "Twelve O'Clock High" is a 1949 World War II movie about an American Air Force Squadron stationed in England in 1942. The unit is facing internal problems until 'no-nonsense' Brigadier General Frank Savage shows up to straighten them out. Met by resistance at first, he winds up turning the squad into a top flight (pun here) crew. Gregory Peck plays the part of the tough Brigadier General.
5. ___ Mules for Sister Sara

Answer: 2

Shirley MacLaine and Clint Eastwood are the stars of "Two Mules for Sister Sara" (1970). The film is a Western about a nun and a gunslinger (I'm sure you can figure out which is which) in Mexico. The nun is about to be raped but the gunslinger intervenes, kills the 'perps' and rescues the nun, i.e. Sara.

The two are then headed to the camp of Mexican revolutionaries to help fight the invading French Army (sacre bleu!). En route, we find the nun drinking, smoking, cursing and good with a gun. Hmmm?
6. ___ Dalmatians

Answer: 101

Glenn Close plays the evil Cruella De Vil in the 1996 movie "101 Dalmatians". The plot, as most of you know, is a PETA nightmare. Cruella is intent on kidnapping puppies in order to kill them and make a coat for herself. The humans, Anita and Roger, meet, fall in love and marry, along with their dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita. Anita's boss, Cruella, now is determined to get her hands on Pongo and Perdita's puppies (pretty alliterative). Pongo and Perdita rally the forces of the animal kingdom in England to help rescue their 99 pups.
7. ___ Charing Cross Road

Answer: 84

Based on a 1970 book by Helene Hanff, "84 Charing Cross Road" was made into a stage play, a TV play and a 1987 movie. The film is based on the true story of the 20 year transatlantic correspondence between New Yorker Helene Hanff and British bookseller Frank Doel, who works at 84 Charing Cross Road. What began as a business inquiry becomes a lifelong friendship.

The lead roles are beautifully played by Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins.
8. ___ Days of the Condor

Answer: 3

The 1975 political thriller "Three Days of the Condor" begins with CIA codebreaker Joe Turner (Robert Redford) arriving at work to find that all his colleagues have been killed. When he goes to his supervisors to tell them what has happened, he learns that they are involved in the murders. With a hitman on his trail and a lovely lady by his side, he must figure out this mystery and who he can trust in order to survive.
9. ___ Easy Pieces

Answer: 5

Jack Nicholson is at his crazy best as Robert Dupea in the 1970 movie "Five Easy Pieces". Dupea drops out of his upper class existence as a classical pianist (hence the 'five easy pieces') to become a blue collar worker on California's oil rigs. He spends his free time in bars and motels, mostly accompanied by his waitress girlfriend, Rayette.

When Dupea finds out that his father is gravely ill, he and Rayette drive to Washington to see him. The trip forces Robert to look at his disparate lives and come to terms with himself.
10. ___ Degrees of Separation

Answer: 6

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, i.e. Will Smith, moves from Philadelphia to New York as Paul Poitier in 1993's "Six Degrees of Separation" (no, Kevin Bacon is not in this film). He winds up at the home of the Kittredges who are wealthy art dealers. Paul claims to have been mugged, showing them a stab wound in his stomach.

He also claims that he knows the Kittredge children who are attending Harvard. He also maintains that he is the son of Sidney Poitier. The Kittridges invite him to spend the night, but when Paul is gone the next morning it brings up many questions about Paul and about their own lives.
