Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Up Where We Belong" ~Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes

Answer: An Officer and a Gentleman

"Up Where We Belong" was written by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings for the cheesy 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman", starring Richard Gere and Deborah Winger. The song reached number one on the U.S. Billboard charts.
2. "Somewhere Out There" ~Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram

Answer: An American Tail

"An American Tail" was a 1986 animated film about a young mouse and his family who immigrate from Russia to America, but the young mouse gets lost and must find his family again. Written by James Horner, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, the song reached a peak of number two in the U.S. and Canada, and number three in the U.K.
3. "Cruel Summer" ~Bananarama

Answer: The Karate Kid

"Cruel Summer" was released in 1983, but it wasn't until it was included in "The Karate Kid" that it reached number nine on the American charts. It is played in the film while Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is cycling through San Fernando Valley.
4. "Eye of the Tiger" ~Survivor

Answer: Rocky III

The theme song of 1982's "Rocky III", "Eye of the Tiger" hit number one in the U.S. for six weeks, and became the number two song of the entire year. Interestingly, Survivor's song "You're the Best", which was featured in "The Karate Kid", was a reject from the "Rocky III" soundtrack.
5. "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" ~Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

Answer: Dirty Dancing

This 1987 hit was written by Franke Previte, John DeNicola, and Donald Markowitz. It won an Academy Award, a Grammy, and a Golden Globe award as well! It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 of the U.S., as well as in many other countries.
6. "Holding Out For a Hero" ~Bonnie Tyler

Answer: Footloose

Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler had a hit with this song. It was featured on her 1986 album "Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire" as well as on the "Footloose" soundtrack.
7. "Power of Love" ~Huey Lewis and the News

Answer: Back to the Future

Huey Lewis and the News provided two songs for the "Back to the Future" soundtrack, this and "Back in Time". They proved to be great hits, as was the 1985 film, which chronicled the adventures of Marty McFly whose friend Doc Brown turns a DeLorean car into a time machine. The film spawned two sequels.
8. "The Heat Is On" ~Glenn Frey

Answer: Beverly Hills Cop

This 1984 film was actually inspired by Frey's song, which went on to then feature in the movie. It hit number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1984. The film starred comedian Eddie Murphy.
9. "Danger Zone" ~Kenny Loggins

Answer: Top Gun

"Highway to the Danger Zone
I'll take you right into the Danger Zone."

This 1986 hit captures the essence of the film "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise. The song peaked at number two on the US Hot 100 Billboard charts.
10. "Don't You (Forget About Me)" ~Simple Minds

Answer: The Breakfast Club

"The Breakfast Club" is bookended by this classic song, and although the film is cheesy and quintessentially 80s, the soundtrack is still special. The song hit number one in Canada, America, and the Netherlands.
