Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jon English (Bob Seger) 1974

Answer: Turn The Page

I'm a Seger fan, but Jon English's is THE definitive version of this song.
2. The Mixtures (Mungo Jerry, Idle Race) 1970

Answer: In The Summertime

The first in a long line of hits for The Mixtures (well, a line, anyway), it was also the inspiration for their original international hit, 'The Pushbike Song'.
3. Jigsaw(also Autumn) (Christie) 1970

Answer: Yellow River

Very creditable versions of top song, covered during the big record label blackban of the early 70's.
4. Zoot (The Beatles, also Vanilla Fudge) 1970

Answer: Eleanor Rigby

Whoever thought that Eleanor would sound so good done Heavy Metal?
5. Somebody's Image (Joe South, also Deep Purple) 1968

Answer: Hush

Russell Morris was lead singer of Somebody's Image, and he re-released the song in 1980 as Russell Morris and the Rubes.
6. Jon English (Rod Stewart, also Chris Farlowe) 1973

Answer: Handbags and Gladrags

Ditto this one as for Q1. But then again, this is a song that no-one can do badly!
7. Johnny Farnham (Nilsson, also Three Dog Night) 1969

Answer: One

About as far removed from Nilsson's version as you could get, this one proved that Johnny could really rock.
8. Johnny Farnham (David Cassidy) 1972

Answer: Rock Me Baby

Johnny was the reigning 'King of Pop' and showed why in this one.
9. Gene Pierson (Four Tops) 1969

Answer: Reach Out

Psychedelia gone wild, this was a classic one-hit go by New Zealander Pierson.
10. Colleen Hewett (The Carpenters, also Rita Coolidge) 1970

Answer: Superstar

Colleen's first hit, her version was the most soulful of all of them.
11. Frankie Davidson (Pipkins) 1970

Answer: Gimme Dat Ding

Silly song, but undeniably catchy.
12. Johnny Chester (Trini Lopez) 1972

Answer: Shame And Scandal

I'm sure a lot of Aussies would be surprised to learn that this wasn't a Chester original. He seemed to fit it so easily.
13. The Throb (Rolling Stones) 1966

Answer: Fortune Teller

Not a big Stones song, but The Throb made big with it.
14. Fourth House (Cat Stevens) 1970

Answer: Wild World

A studio production, this version is largely forgotten, but that's not because of a lack of quality!
15. Liv Maessen (Anne Murray) 1971

Answer: Snowbird

Liv had two monster hits with covers, this was the second.
16. Doug Parkinson In Focus (The Beatles) 1969

Answer: Dear Prudence

Doug had a reputation around this time as a sort of Australian answer to Joe Cocker but, although they had a similar R and B style, Doug was an original.
17. Al Head (Joel Dayde) 1971

Answer: Mamy Blue

When this song was released, all versions were played, because it was such a quality cut. Now, no-one remembers it (except you and me!)
18. Matt Flinders (Danyel Gerard) 1972

Answer: Butterfly

Gerard's French version was the bigger hit, but obviously there were enough people around who liked their music in English to push Matt's version into the top 15.
19. Pink Finks (The Kingsmen) 1965

Answer: Louie, Louie

Pink Finks was the first group (still in High School) of Ross Wilson and Ross Hannaford, later of Daddy Cool fame.
20. The Bootleg Family Band (Loggins and Messina) 1972

Answer: Your Mama Don't Dance

In 1972-75, Brian Cadd and his Bootleg label could do no wrong. This was his backing band (helped by Brian on vocals).
21. Mark Holden (Eric Carmen) 1976

Answer: Never Gonna Fall In Love Again

I won't mention the carnation that Mark used to wear, or the whole 'goody two-shoes' image that he hated so much. Whoops, I already did!
22. Fraternity (The Moody Blues) 1971

Answer: Question

I think this was recorded when Bon Scott was still lead singer of Fraternity, it was a big hit in Sydney.
23. Liv Maessen (Mary Hopkin) 1970

Answer: Knock Knock Who's There?

Liv's first biggie, she actually won fame as a winner on 'New Faces'.
24. Johnny Farnham (B.J. Thomas) 1969

Answer: Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

Johnny had a lot of cover versions, but the way he did them, they may as well have been originals!
25. Samael Lilith (The Moody Blues) 1970

Answer: Nights In White Satin

Daryl Braithwaite's first group, this was another local hit in Sydney.
