Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which object did the baroque cello lack that is attached to the modern cello?

Answer: End pin

So, a baroque person would grip the cello between his/her legs. The end pin actually transmits some sound to the floor.
2. The viola pomposa had an extra string, a fifth string. The modern cello only has four strings. What was the extra string?

Answer: E-string

The viola pomposa was invented by Bach. In Bach's 'Six Suites for Cello', the Sixth Suite was written for the five-stringed viola pomposa, so if you were playing on a modern one, you'd have to play high up. Around 10th positon (estimation).
3. How is the baroque bow different from the modern bow?

Answer: Baroque bow wood is bent the opposite way

Now you know why it's called a 'bow'. (Bow and arrow...)
4. Where would you usually hold the baroque bow?

Answer: Just before the balancing point

This is done to put less tension on the strings.
5. What factor allows the sound to slowly diminish as you pull the baroque bow across the string?

Answer: The lightness at the end of the bow

It was made to diminish, so it would sound like the harpsichord.
6. What were the baroque cello strings made of, instead of wire?

Answer: Gut

Gut has a warmer, more relaxed sound than wire. Wire has a metallic, piercing sound.
7. What's different about the baroque cello tuning?

Answer: It is lower

So the baroque's A would be like today's G# or something.
8. At which instrument was Bach really a virtuoso?

Answer: Organ

Bach was an organ virtuoso.
9. Who else copied Bach's 'Six Suites for Cello' besides Anna Magdelena?

Answer: Joseph Kellner

Joseph Kellner was Bach's student.
Johann Ambrosius was Bach's father.
Maria Barbara was Bach's first wife.
The original copy by Bach was lost.
10. Finally, an easy one to finish. The baroque cello's bass bar is smaller than the modern cellos. Where is this bass bar located?

Answer: Inside the cello

The bass bar boosts the sound. It is a thin cylinder made of wood. The bigger the bass bar is, the more sound it has. Thanks for playing my quiz!
