Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with an easy question. How many strings are (usually) on each instrument in the string orchestra?

Answer: 4

The guitar has six strings, but it isn't in the string orchestra.
2. The violin section is divided up into two groups.

Answer: True

Because there are so many violin players, the violin section is usually divided into two groups, 1st violin and 2nd violin.
3. Which group usually plays the melody?

Answer: 1st violin

In the 16th century, both 1st and 2nd violin played the melody. It was considered to be a duet.
4. Which section is at the back of the orchestra?

Answer: bass

All of the other sections sit around the conductor and go back from there. In some string orchestras, there is a harp. They sit in the back, behind the 1st and 2nd violins.
5. Which two instruments have end pins?

Answer: cello and bass

Because the celli and basses are so large, they need end pins to keep the instuments steady.
6. Which instrument is shaped differently from the others and is tuned in fourths?

Answer: bass

All of the other instruments are shaped similarly, and are tuned in fifths. The bass is really the odd one out, isn't it?
7. The violin has the lowest pitch.

Answer: False

The violin actually has the highest pitch.
8. The viola is the only instrument with a C string.

Answer: False

The cello also has a C string, but the cello's C string is lower.
9. Which of these instruments are you least likely to play standing up?

Answer: cello

The violin and viola have higher pitches, and the bass has the lowest pitch out of all of the instuments. The cello's size makes a sitting position best.
10. The f holes are where the sound emerges from.

Answer: True

The f holes are where the sound comes from. They are usually placed on the sides of the bridge. The bridge helps keep the strings in place.
