Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, the name "arpeggione" is not the original name for the instrument. What is the real name of this string instrument?

Answer: Guitarre D'amore

The inventor of the instrument called it the Guitarre D'amore, literally the "guitar of love", because of its warm tone.
2. The arpeggione is best described as a cross between which two instruments?

Answer: guitar and cello

The arpeggione has six strings, tuned the same way as the guitar. It is the size and shape of a cello, and played with a bow by a cellist (or, rather, by an arpeggionist).
3. Which of these people invented the arpeggione?

Answer: Johann Georg Staufer

Staufer invented the arpeggione in 1823 or '24. Schuster played the piece written for him. Henzl was a painter who lived a generation later.
4. How many pieces of music were written originally for the arpeggione?

Answer: 1

Unless you want to include my attempt at recreating music for the instrument, the only piece of music known to have been written for the arpeggione until the 2020s was a sonata written for it.
5. Who composed the most famous piece for arpeggione?

Answer: Franz Schubert

Schubert also rearranged the arpeggione part for violin, and again for cello, in case the arpeggione never gained popularity.
6. In what key did the composer write this piece?

Answer: A minor

Schubert also called the instrument by its nickname, the Arpeggione, rather than by Staufer's original name for the instrument.
7. The arpeggione had frets.

Answer: True

Another detail nearly forgotten. The arpeggione had frets like a guitar.
8. If "arpeggione" was not the original name of the instrument, why did it live on, rather than the original name?

Answer: All of these

The name certainly outlived the instrument.
9. When did the composer Franz Schubert die?

Answer: 1828

After Beethoven's funeral in 1827, Schubert went with his friends to a nearby bar and toasted the next person among them who would follow Beethoven to the grave. Little did Schubert know that a year later he would be next. His dying wish was to be buried next to Beethoven.
10. How many movements does the piece for the arpeggione have?

Answer: 3

Allegro, Andante and Rondo.
