Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thomas Dolby's song, 'She Blinded Me with Science', sold considerably better in the USA than in his home country. Where was he from?

Answer: Britain

The song, from 1982/3, reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in America, but reached only number 49 in the UK. A well-known presenter of science programmes in the UK at the time, named Magnus Pyke, contributes to the record by shouting out comments.
2. 'Don't know much about a science book' is one line from the lyrics of 'Wonderful World' sung by which of the following?

Answer: Sam Cooke

The lyrics cover all the academic subjects the singer knows nothing about, including biology, history, French and algebra. He does know that he loves his girl and if she loved him too, what a 'Wonderful World' it would be. Wikipedia lists the song as having reached number 2 on the US Black Singles chart, number 12 on the US Pop Singles chart and number 27 on the UK singles chart, all in 1960.
3. Which British glam rock band, whose lead singer was Brian Connolly, had a minor UK hit with a song named 'Alexander Graham Bell'?

Answer: Sweet

'Sweet' had numerous top ten hits in the UK, and also made the charts in the USA, most notably with 'Little Willy' and 'Ballroom Blitz'. Connolly died in 1997. 'T-Rex' were led by Marc Bolan, 'Slade' by Noddy Holder and 'Wizzard' by Roy Wood.
4. Diana Ross had a number one UK hit in 1986 with 'Chain Reaction'. Who wrote the song?

Answer: Bee Gees

Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb wrote the song and also performed on the record, singing backing vocals. The song was also a huge hit in Australia, but performed poorly in the USA. The other options are all prolific songwriters, with numerous hits to their names.
5. The hit single 'Biology' came from the album 'Chemistry' by which British girl band?

Answer: Girls Aloud

'Girls Aloud' were formed in 2002 on a reality television show called 'Popstars: The Rivals', which put together a girls versus boys group. They have bucked the trend and remained successful ever since. 'Chemistry' was released in 2005. Cheryl Cole, one of the five members, has been a judge on the British version of 'The X Factor', another television talent show, since 2008.
6. The REM song, 'Man on the Moon' refers to two famous scientists in the lyrics. Newton is one, but who is the other?

Answer: Darwin

The song is about the American actor/entertainer Andy Kaufman who died at the young age of 35 in 1984. As he had joked about faking his own death, there are many fans who still believe his death was not real. The song dates from 1993 and the title was used for a film about Kaufman in 1999.
7. 'The Scientist' is a 2002 single by which British group?

Answer: Coldplay

The song came from their album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. It reached number 10 on the UK singles chart and number 18 on the US Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. Other tracks from this album released as singles included 'In My Place' and 'Clocks'. Coldplay's lead singer, Chris Martin, married American actress Gwyneth Paltrow in 2003.
8. 'They All Laughed' is another song which names scientists, Edison and Marconi among others. Who wrote it?

Answer: George Gershwin

'They all laughed when Edison recorded sound' & 'They told Marconi, wireless was a phoney' are the specific lines from this song, written in 1936. The song tells how various pioneers were laughed at, as the singer is for aiming at a girl beyond his reach. But the singer gets the girl and the inventors were right, so 'Who's Got the Last Laugh Now?'.
9. Reaching number one in the UK in both 1975 & 1991, and number two in the USA in 1992, 'Galileo' is repeated five times in one line of which song?

Answer: Bohemian Rhapsody

Sung by Queen, of course. The song was written by Freddie Mercury and came from the album 'A Night at the Opera'. It was re-released in 1992 following Freddie's untimely death. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was also featured on the soundtrack of the film 'Wayne's World', which helped it to its number 2 US chart position.
10. 'OK, so you're a rocket scientist' are lyrics from which Shania Twain song?

Answer: That Don't Impress Me Much

The single was taken from Shania's hugely successful 1997 album 'Come on Over' which was a crossover from country to mainstream. This song reached number 3 on the UK charts and number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the USA. It was also a big hit in many other countries.
