Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band moaned about the girlfriend being born in the Arctic zone, with the release of their 1980 hit "She's So Cold"?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Mick Jagger channels Chuck Berry as he struts and complains that his girlfriend is like an ice-cream cone while he's the "bleeding volcano". Poor Mick. The song was the second single to be released from their 1980 album "Emotional Rescue" which followed hot on the heels (pun intended) of their highly successful "Some Girls" disc from 1978. Whilst "Emotional Rescue" was panned for its disco flavour, there is little argument that "She's So Cold" is just a good, down-to-earth, rock and roll song.

This question was thawed out by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
2. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" was written by Frank Loesser as a Christmas carol.

Answer: False

Yes, the song is often sung during the holiday period, but that is only because of its wintery theme. Loesser wrote the song in 1944 for he and his wife (Lynn Garland) to perform as a duet at their housewarming party. The song proved to be a hit amongst the party goers that the pair soon found themselves on the invitation lists of numerous parties (as Garland would proclaim, "it was our was our ticket to caviar and truffles") with the request to close the event with their song. Loesser, much to Garland's disgust, would sell the song to MGM in 1948, where it was used in their romantic comedy "Neptune's Daughter" (1949). Not sure if Garland was placated when the song won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year.

The shivers in this question were introduced by Phoenix Rising member pollucci19.
3. This band had popular songs like "Willin' " and "Oh, Atlanta" plus albums like "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" and "Sailin' Shoes" which contained the song, "Cold Cold Cold". What mixed-genre band is this?

Answer: Little Feat

Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1969, Little Feat's music is described as a blend of rock, blues, country, jazz and various other genres. Singer-guitarist Lowell George and singer-keyboardist Bill Payne met in 1969 and with two others formed the band. With some help early on from Frank Zappa, Little Feat obtained a recording contract with Warner Brothers. Lowell George died in 1979 from a cocaine-induced heart attack. Like many bands from the era, Little Feat broke up, reunited and Bill Payne is still with them.

4. "Cold Day in the Sun" saw Dave Grohl make a return to the drum kits spurning his role as lead singer, guitarist, songwriter and front man of his own group. Who recorded this song?

Answer: Foo Fighters

After Kurt Cobain's untimely death in 1994, Nirvana were no more and Dave Grohl formed Foo Fighters as a one-man project for its eponymous album in 1995. In time Mr Grohl recruited a stable band, retaining guitar and lead vocals for himself. "In Your Honor" (2005) was their fifth album, a double featuring their traditional heavy rock found on the first album. The second disc of that album was dubbed the acoustic disc as it contained a wide variety of genres. "Cold Day In The Sun" is the penultimate track and features Dave Grohl returning to the drum kit and Taylor Hawkins playing guitar and retaining lead vocals. Mr Hawkins wrote the song and admits to playing tambourine, an instrument he does not like playing. He says that the Eagles/Southern California sound was unintentional.

This questioned was thawed out by 1nn1 who lives in a place where the sun is always warm. This song became a favourite after a visit to Poland in March where the sun was out but it projected no warmth.
5. Which of the following artists did NOT release "Stone Cold Sober" as a single?

Answer: Ben E. King

Three artists with three radically different songs. Brantley Gilbert's song is a country number released in 2015 as the fourth single from his third studio album "Just As I Am". Paloma Faith, known for her eccentric style, released "Stone Cold Sober" as her debut single in 2009 and it can found on her "Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?" album. Scottish alternative band Del Amitri released their song as the second single from their delightful 1989 album "Waking Hours".

Singer Rod Stewart would also release a song with the same title, though as the b-side to his 1976 single "Sailing". (Note) In the USA the b-side was "All in the Name of Rock 'N' Roll".

Don't tell anyone but a non-teetotalling pollucci19 bought you this question.
6. This husband/wife duo turned out a bluesy song, "In the Cold, Cold Night". The wife who sang lead on this tune more commonly provided back up vocals and percussion. Which group asked us to "come to me again, in the cold, cold night"?

Answer: The White Stripes

Meg White sang the lead vocals on this tune, which appeared on their fourth album, "Elephant" (2003). Her (then) husband Jack provides the guitar line. Notably, there are no drums On the song.

Cannot for the life of me think of the kind of cutesy signature lines y'all come up with! (pusdoc).
7. From John Denver's "Farewell Andromeda" album, the song "Rocky Mountain Suite (Cold Nights in Canada)" moves its focus from the Rockies in Aspen, Colorado to which Canadian alpine gem?

Answer: Jasper, Alberta

The song speaks, as many of Denver's songs do, of the importance of understanding and listening to the land, the joy of seeing the high country and its people, and learning from them. The "Farewell Andromeda" studio album was released in June 1973.

Denver was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr in Roswell, New Mexico, the son of military parents. Disparaging the overdevelopment of nature's significant beauty spots was a recurring theme in his music and was in fact one of the issues he lent vocal public support to. He was a co-founder of The Hunger Project and was awarded the Presidential World Without Hunger Award in 1987 by Ronald Reagan.

The question by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid was inspired by the cool country of the Rockies.
8. John Lennon presented the song "Cold Turkey" to The Beatles to record as part of the "Abbey Road" album?

Answer: True

Some reports indicate that the song was rejected by (Paul) McCartney and others indicate that all three of the other members did not consider it suitable. Lennon then revealed it to the public at the Toronto Rock and Revival Show in September of 1969, at the same time introducing the embryo of what was to become the Plastic Ono Band. The live album featuring the track, "Live Peace in Toronto 1969", would be released in December of that year. That performance features Eric Clapton playing lead guitar (Clapton would turn down Lennon's offer to join the Plastic Ono Band) and Yoko Ono making turkey noises on the song.

That pollucci19, he's a goose, but he still managed to come up with this question.
9. On which album will you find the John Cougar track "Hot Night in a Cold Town"? (Hint: look closely at the singer's name).

Answer: Nothin' Matters and What If It Did

John Mellencamp's early recordings were done under the names of Johnny Cougar or John Cougar. Under these names he found success with songs such as "I Need a Lover" (1978), "Ain't Even Done With the Night" (1981), which appears on "Nothin' Matters..."and "Jack and Diane" (1982). The success of these songs gave him enough star power to go to his record label and demand that his (real) surname, Mellencamp, now be included on his recordings. Of these, "Uh-Huh" (1983) was the first, followed by "Scarecrow" (1985) and "The Lonesome Jubilee" (1987).

"Hot Night in a Cold Town" is the only original song on "Nothin' Matters and What If It Did" (1980) that wasn't written by Mellencamp (Cougar) (discounting the cover of "Peppermint Twist"). Instead it was written by Geoffrey Cushing-Murray and Richard Littlefield who'd mailed a cassette version of it to Mellencamp.

Not that it really matters but this question was written by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
10. Who recorded the song "Cold Water", which appeared on his album "Mule Variations" in 1999?

Answer: Tom Waits

"Mule Variations" was the twelfth studio album for Waits and it came after a long gap since his previous studio album "The Black Rider", which had been released in 1993. The new release would earn Waits a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The album serves to bring Waits' poetry to the fore and is filled with amazing tracks that he'd drawn from his own life experiences. On "Cold Water" he talks to the listener from the perspective of a hobo. In an interview with Magnet Magazine in 1999 Waits reveals "I have slept in a graveyard and I have rode the rails. When I was a kid, I used to hitchhike all the time from California to Arizona with a buddy named Sam Jones. We would just see how far we could go in three days, on a weekend, see if we could get back by Monday".

This question was poured out by Phoenix Rising's bartender pollucci19.
