Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The rock drum set usually needs which of the following drums and cymbals?

Answer: Bass drum, snare drum, mounted tom, floor tom, crash cymbal, ride cymbal and hihats

A basic rock drum set needs to have drums to be used for the main beat such as the ride cymbal, the hihats, the bass drum and the snare drum. Drums needed for fills are both the mounted and floor toms and the crash cymbals to end the fill.
2. When you are looking for a sound that fits slow, soft rock, then which one of these cymbals sounds better?

Answer: The ride cymbal

The ride cymbal is usually struck with the bead and it has a soft 'ping' sound, so that would fit slow, soft rock.
3. The bass drum is usually played on which of these beats in a 4/4 time signature?

Answer: 1 and 3

In a basic beat in a 4/4 time signature, The snare plays on 2 and 4 and the bass drum on 1 and 3.
4. If the bass drum plays on 1 and 3 in a 3/4 time signature and the snare does not play on the same beat as the bass drum but still plays on the beat, what beat does the snare drum play on?

Answer: two

The snare usually plays on the beat that the bass is not played on, so beat two is the best choice.
5. If you want to play no triplets in a 4/4 time signature and the bass drum plays on beats 1 and 3 along with the snare drum which plays on 2 and 4, What beat should you play the hihats on when you play a rock beat?

Answer: The hihat should play on the beat or play steady 8th notes from 1 to 4

You should make the beat steady and keep a moderate tempo while playing it.
6. At the end of a hard rock song, what sounds better when playing on the crash cymbals?

Answer: Do a fading roll on them

It sounds better if you hear a loud sound to a soft sound at the end.
7. What cymbal is usually played on the same beat as the bass drum?

Answer: Crash cymbal

The snare and hihat are often played on the other beats in the measure.
8. Which drum has the lowest tone in a drum set?

Answer: bass drum

The bass drum is the largest drum on a drum set. Generally, the larger a drum, the lower its sound, so the bass drum has a lower tone than the other drums.
9. If a drum set has 1 rack tom, which of the following has the highest tone in a drum set?

Answer: snare drum

The snare drum is tuned the highest of the drums mentioned.
10. On a right hand drum set, the higher toms should be put where?

Answer: left of the main rack tom

Usually the higher tom should be put left of the main rack tom.
