Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1957, The Bobbettes had a number one hit with "Mr. Lee". The song was a huge success and is still well thought-of as a party favorite to this day. About two years later, the five young girls followed up with what song?

Answer: I Shot Mr. Lee

"Mr. Lee" was written by The Bobbettes about their high school principal. "I Shot Mr. Lee" was their attempt at a follow-up song. Their label, Atlantic, rejected the song so The Bobbettes moved to the Triple X label where the tune started to catch on. Quickly, Atlantic released their copy of the girls' song.

A long explanation here for a song that didn't even chart. It's a weird and fun song, though.
2. Claude King warned us in 1962 about Clifton Clowers who is "mighty handy with a gun and a knife". He lived on "Wolverton Mountain" (also the name of the song) with his daughter. Jo Ann Campbell had an answer song "I"m the Girl from Wolverton Mountain" also in 1962. What best describes the relationship of Clifton Clowers and his daughter?

Answer: overprotective father and overprotected daughter

Claude King hailed from Shreveport, Louisiana. Aside from "Wolverton Mountain" he had 27 chart singles. He appeared in a few movies and the 1982 television miniseries "The Blue and the Gray". Jo Ann Campbell answered Claude's song with "I'm the Girl from Wolverton Mountain" which went to number 38 on U.S. charts.

She married Troy Seals, brother of Dan Seals, and has long since retired from singing.
3. Lesley Gore told the sad story of a jilted girl whose boyfriend, Johnny, showed up at a party with another girl in 1963's "It's My Party". Only two months later, Lesley scored again with her follow-up "It's Judy's Turn to Cry" about this teen soiree. According to the lyrics which of the following did NOT happen at this disastrous party?

Answer: The punch bowl and crepe paper decorations were destroyed.

Quincy Jones produced much of Lesley Gore's early material. Lesley went on to record pop standards such as "Maybe I Know", "She's a Fool", and "You Don't Own Me".
4. Charlie Brown became a household name in the late fifties thanks to the cartoon strip genius of Charles Schultz. Then, in 1959, The Coasters recorded a Leiber and Stoller tune describing the antics of a ne'er-do-well youth in their song, "Charlie Brown". It was an enormous hit. Shortly thereafter, Joe Tex recorded an answer song revealing Charlie Brown's fate. What is the title of this obscure answer to "Charlie Brown"?

Answer: Charlie Brown Got Expelled

"Charlie Brown Got Expelled" was a very early effort by Joe Tex who would later have hits with "Skinny Legs and All" and "Hold What You Got", among others. The answer song to the The Coasters' hit is a real rarity. It appears on "Ace Story Vol. 4".
5. The summer of 1958 brought us the catchy "Willie and the Hand Jive" by Johnny Otis. The infectious song went to number 9 (and stayed on the charts for 15 weeks). Johnny attempted a follow-up number about Willie becoming involved in a dance craze of the era. What is the title of this follow-up song about Willie?

Answer: Willie Did the Cha Cha

Willie did the cha cha at Chico's Shack. Otis gave the song a Latin flavor and a bit of intrigue about Chico. Oh, OK, I know you're wondering. Chico was the owner/bartender who discovered he could pocket profits while Willie was teaching the customers on the dance floor how to cha cha. Honest.
6. Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" went to number 3 in November, 1957 and it was an instant classic. The song told of undying love and adoration for the girl. Buddy's follow-up song revealed that something must have gone terribly wrong with their relationship. He seemed to be on the outside relying only on rumors. What happened to Peggy Sue? The title of the follow-up song tells us. What is it?

Answer: Peggy Sue Got Married

Buddy cautiously tells us only that he heard about Peggy's marriage to someone else. That would have been the end of the story except that in 1986 Francis Coppola released a wonderful time travel movie entitled "Peggy Sue Got Married" starring Kathleen Turner. The movie goes into detail on what happened to Peggy. Nicely, the movie uses the Holly song as the main title.
7. In June of 1960, Hank Locklin recorded "Please Help Me I'm Falling" which quickly became a standard, achieving number one on Country charts. Hard to resist, a female artist scored with an answer song, "(I Can't Help You), I'm Falling Too". Who was the singer who answered Hank's lament?

Answer: Skeeter Davis

Skeeter had her first chart hit with "(I Can't Help You), I'm Falling Too". In a bit of an unusual take, she sings about agreeing with Hank's lyrics in that they could never be happy "living in sin". Skeeter recorded many terrific songs such as "End of the World" which became an undeniable classic.
8. One of the legendary tunes of the fifties was Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode". It is still revered today. The follow-up song to this 1958 classic, "Bye Bye Johnny", appeared in 1960. Which of the following did Johnny eventually NOT do?

Answer: He became best friends with an English guy named Keith.

Chuck is said to have written this song about accompianist Johnny Johnson who is a legend in his own rite. Almost everything Chuck Berry touched turned to gold. Keith Richards had the privilege of humbly inducting Chuck into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
9. Lonnie Russ went on a rant in 1962 about his wife's lack of culinary skills in "My Wife Can't Cook". The song did not chart in the U.S., but went to number 57 in the U.K. Lonnie did not get away with his griping. Little Alice came back at him with "So What If I Can't Cook?". What was the one accusation that she did NOT throw back at her complaining hubby?

Answer: He was usually too drunk to eat anyway.

Information about Little Alice is hard to come by. The 45 rpm disc is on the 4-J label, as is Lonnie's song. He also receives writing credit for "So What If I Can't Cook?" along with R. Gross and V. Love. It's a fun song.
10. At the end of 1957, LaVern Baker recorded an incredible song entitled "Jim Dandy". The song is quintessential fifties music. Shortly thereafter, LaVern attempted a follow-up song with "Jim Dandy Got Married" which did not do very well. Although, this follow-up revealed Jim Dandy's nickname and his lady-love's name. What are the two names?

Answer: Dan and Mae

LaVern recorded two hits with The Gliders as back-up. One of them was "Jim Dandy". They were conspicuously missing on "Jim Dandy Got Married". By comparison, the follow-up seemed a little weak. For fans of the "Jim Dandy" phenomenon, though, it's a pretty cool song. The revealing lines from the song are "Jim Dandy was nicknamed Dan, luckiest cat in all the land" and "Loved Mae so well it seems, in a month she was plum insane".
Follow-up and answer songs were very often quirky or downright weird, almost never as successful as the original, but invariably fun curiosities. Thank you!
