Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Good Life" was actually the fourth single released from OneRepublic's second album. What was the name of this album, something that many of us may not want to do on Monday mornings?

Answer: Waking Up

"Waking Up" was released in the United States in 2009, two years after the band's first album "Dreaming Out Loud". "Good Life" was actually the fourth single released from the album following the songs "All the Right Moves", "Secrets", and "Marchin On".
2. One interesting feature of "Good Life" is that a small part of the song may be different depending on which U.S. radio station is playing it. Why is this?

Answer: The band recorded multiple versions with different city/state names in one of the lines.

When I first heard the song when it was released as a single in the U.S. in 2010 I heard the line "My friends in Colorado they don't know". A few years later when I had moved to Osceola County in Central Florida "Good Life" was on the radio and the same line was "My friends in Orlando they don't know". I thought that possibly the radio station itself was adding local flair to the song but sure enough when I looked it up I found out that OneRepublic had recorded multiple versions of this line to appeal to different U.S. markets.
3. In addition to hit songs like "Counting Stars" and "Apologize", what frontman of OneRepublic was the lead singer for the song "Good Life"?

Answer: Ryan Tedder

In addition to writing songs and being the lead singer of OneRepublic, Ryan Tedder has also written hit songs for various artists including Beyoncé and Leona Lewis. Tedder shared a Grammy Award in 2012 for his help in the production of Adele's album "21" that won Album of the Year.
4. As can be expected, a critically and commercially successful song like "Good Life" is likely to have a music video made for it. In what locale are the band members during the video?

Answer: A field out in a mountain valley

The video was filmed in a mountainous valley in West Hills, California. In various parts of the video the band is seen through individuals holding large cards. These cards then morph into a full shot of the band itself singing out in the field.
5. Another unique feature about "Good Life" is that in addition to the words themselves there is actually another persistent vocal theme in the song. Of the following, which vocal theme does "Good Life" use to pace the song?

Answer: Whistling

Similar to how other songs like "Happy" by Pharrell Williams use clapping to pace the song, "Good Life" utilizes whistling for the same effect. "Good Life" was one of the 15 featured songs on a "Rolling Stone" list in 2011 of the greatest whistling songs of all-time.
6. The second half of the quiz will ask questions on the lyrics of "Good Life". What British city is mentioned in the first line of the song that is followed by "Found myself in the city near Piccadilly"?

Answer: London

The full first line of "Good Life" is "Woke up in London yesterday". Interestingly the singer doesn't even know how he got to London or remember the new pictures, numbers, and names on his phone.
7. In addition to the new names and numbers on his phone, there is also a new address on his phone. Possibly paying homage to The Beatles, what locale finishes the following line from "Good Life": "Address to places like _____ ____"?

Answer: Abbey Road

Abbey Road is the name of a street in London, a recording studio that opened in 1931, and the eleventh album released by the Beatles. OneRepublic lead singer Ryan Tedder stated that the band is "influenced by everyone from the Beatles to U2, and anything in between".
8. In "Good Life" the band mentions a prominent east coast city. To his friends in what former national capital does the singer say hello?

Answer: New York

The exact line in the song is "To my friends in New York, I say hello". OneRepublic was formed in Colorado Springs in 2002, a considerable distance from the city of New York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790 when it was moved to Philadelphia and then Washington D.C.
9. One stanza of "Good Life" effectively uses a word to describe a sentiment that would make having a good life difficult. In "Good Life", what word fills in the blanks from the following lines: "__________ I feel like there might be something that I'll miss", "__________ I feel like the window closes oh so quick", "__________ I'm taking a mental picture of you now"?

Answer: Hopelessly

The stanza finishes with the line "'Cause hopelessly the hope is we have so much to feel good about". I think the dichotomy between a good life and feelings of hopelessness is very effective. Particularly, the words are sung more powerfully for the good life part.
10. The final line of "Good Life" implores us to keep negative thoughts to ourselves. What word fills in the blank that follows "We all got stories but please tell me what there is to ________ about"?

Answer: Complain

This line is very powerful as it essentially states that we all have problems but that complaining about them doesn't make anything better. Of course at times it can be therapeutic to discuss our problems. For me certain songs such as "Good Life" can help put me in a better mood regardless of how my day is going.
