Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima'

Answer: Krzysztof Penderecki

It is an extremely harrowing piece, for 50 stringed instruments!
2. 'Company'

Answer: Philip Glass

'Company' is both a string quartet and the incidental music to a Samuel Beckett play. It features the usual hypnotic minor key arpeggios that Philip Glass has made a career out of.
3. Three 'Suites for Violoncello'

Answer: Benjamin Britten

These were written for Mstislav Rostropovich. They're also very good!
4. 'Scythian Suite'

Answer: Sergei Prokofiev

One of Prokofiev's 'enfant terrible' pieces, the 'Scythian Suite' was not well-received by the older generation.
5. '4'33'

Answer: John Cage

Yes, it's the one which features 4 minutes 33 seconds of silence. What great art! Even Xenakis, Stockhausen and Varese didn't sink that low...
6. 'Wozzeck'

Answer: Alban Berg

'Wozzeck' is possibly the most famous atonal opera! Berg was the most successful of the Second Viennese School (which also comprised Schoenberg and Webern).
7. 'Nights in the Garden of Spain'

Answer: Manuel de Falla

It's a piano concerto, basically. Falla's music is very Spanish-sounding.
8. 'Genuine Flabby Preludes (For A Dog)'

Answer: Erik Satie

A typically obtuse title from one of the most eccentric composers of all time, the Frenchman Erik Satie. He's more famous for his 'Gymnopedies'.
9. 'A Soldier's Tale'

Answer: Igor Stravinsky

I've never heard it, but apparently it's great.
10. 'The Gadfly'

Answer: Dmitri Shostakovich

When Shostakovich wasn't being persecuted by the Soviet authorities for his 'dissonances', he was writing slightly less controversial music such as the film score to 'The Gadfly'.
