Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ray Charles claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1961 with a song concerning a command from his sweetheart. Which entreaty was this?

Answer: Hit The Road, Jack

"Hit The Road Jack" topped the Billboard charts and was Ray Charles second number one hit. In all Ray charted 91 songs on the Billboard top 100 from 1957 through 2005. Many of his songs that did not make the charts were standards for rock groups of the 1960's, such as "This Little Girl of Mine", "I Got A Woman" and "Hallelujah I Love Her So"
2. Australian Johnny O'Keeefe topped his home chart in 1961 with which song?

Answer: I'm Counting On You

"I'm Counting On You" backed with the rocking "Right Now" topped the Aussie charts for 5 weeks remaining on the charts for 19 weeks. The flipside made the top ten and stayed on the charts even longer. "The Wild One" (which was Johnny O'Keefe's nickname), "She's My Baby" and his note for note cover version of the Isely Brothers, "Shout" were earlier hits for Johnny.
3. The Highwaymen grabbed the number one spot in the USA and UK with which traditional folk song?

Answer: Michael (Row The Boat Ashore)

"Michael" was the Highwaymen's first single relase and their only number one. In Australia, "Michael" reached the number two slot and stayed there for two weeks behind Roy Orbison's "Crying".
4. Pat Boone achieved the last of his six number ones on the Billboard Hot 100 with?

Answer: Moody River

"Moody River" stayed at number one on the Billboard charts for only one week in May 1961. "Moody River" made top ten in Australia and top twenty in the UK. Pat Boone was second only to Elvis Presley for chart successes in the 1950's.
5. An instrumental by The Bob Moore Orchestra was number one for two weeks in Australia. What was this instrumental titled?

Answer: Mexico

"Mexico" by Bob Moore was a mariachi-styled tune that stayed on the Australian charts for 3 months. The record made the top ten on the Billboard chart but did not chart in the UK. Bob Moore was a well known bass playing session man and arranger in Nashville. He appeared on recordings of Elvis Presley, Pat Boone, Roy Orbison, Brenda Lee and many others.
6. Chubby Checker made it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with which dance record in January 1961?

Answer: Pony Time

"Pony Time" gave chubby Checker his second number one hit. Oddly enough his first and third number ones were with the same recording, "The Twist" was number one in September 1960 then again in for two weeks in January 1962. Thus "The Twist" by Chubby Checker is the only number one record to re-enter the charts and go to the top again. "Pony Time" made the top twenty in Australia and The UK.
7. Bobby Vee's first record to make the charts in Australia went to number one. Which song, written by Gene Pitney, was it?

Answer: Rubber Ball

"Rubber Ball" stayed at number one for two weeks and was replaced by "One Last Kiss" by Bobby Vee for one week then another version of the same song by Billy (Crash) Craddock took over the top spot. Rubber Ball was a top ten in the USA and top ten in the UK for both Bobby Vee and Marty Wilde.
8. Elvis managed another number one with a reworking of an italian folk song. Which recording by Elvis got to the top for two weeks in the USA?

Answer: Surrender

Based on "Come Back to Sorrento", Surrender was Elvis's second number on of 1961. The record made number one in Australia and the UK.
9. Bobby Lewis made number one on the Billboard charts with which fidgety song?

Answer: Tossin' and Turnin'

"Tossin' and Turnin'" stayed on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 7 weeks. This made it the top song in the USA for 1961. Ironically the song did not make the charts in Australia or the UK. I know it crept onto the top forty in Sydney and received a lot of airplay, Obviously not enough sales to make the national chart.
10. Helen Shapiro had two number one in the UK in 1961.The first was "You Don't Know", what was the other?

Answer: Walking Back To Happiness

"Walking Back To Happiness" Charted for two weeks in the USA barely making a dent in the charts. In Australia the record made the top ten. Helen's popularity was primarily in the UK and Europe. However in 1963 Helen had a double sided number one in Australia with "No Trespassing"/"Not Responsible". That particular record did not chart in the UK.

Interestingly, "It's My Party" the first major hit for Lesley Gore, was originally recorded by Helen Shapiro on her 1963 Album "Helen In Nashville".
