Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the missing word for this old-time hymn: "The Old _________ Cross'.

Answer: Rugged

The missing word in the title is 'Rugged'. In other words, the title of the old-time Gospel hymn is 'The Old Rugged Cross', a classic written by George Bennard, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, in 1912.

Even though the hymn was written more than one hundred years ago, it remains popular today. 'The Old Rugged Cross' has been recorded by numerous musicians, including Al Green, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Mahalia Jackson, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Tennessee Ernie Ford and George Beverly Shea.

Here are the words to 'The Old Rugged Cross':

"On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff'ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain:
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

[Refrain]

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

[Refrain]

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He'll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I'll share.

[Refrain]"
2. Find the missing word for this old-time hymn: "Glory to His _____".

Answer: Name

The missing word in the title is 'Name'. John H.Stockton wrote 'Glory To His Name' in 1878. The hymn is also known as 'Down At the Cross'. Stockton, a Methodist minister, was born in New Hope, Pennsylvania, in 1813.

Here are the words to the old-time hymn 'Glory To His Name':

"Down at the cross where my Savior died,
Down where for cleansing from sin I cried,
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to His Name!

Refrain:
Glory to His Name,
Glory to His Name:
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to His Name!

I am so wondrously saved from sin,
Jesus so sweetly abides within,
There at the cross where He took me in;
Glory to His Name!

[Refrain]

Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin,
I am so glad I have entered in;
There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean;
Glory to His Name!

[Refrain]

Come to this fountain so rich and sweet,
Cast thy poor soul at the Savior's feet;
Plunge in today, and be made complete;
Glory to His Name!

[Refrain]"
3. Find the missing word for this old-time hymn: "________ In Jesus."

Answer: Victory

'Victory in Jesus' is one of my favorite hymns. The old-time classic was written by Eugene Monroe Bartlett Sr. in 1939. Bartlett is regarded by many as one of founding fathers of southern Gospel and in 1979 he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Bartlett, a successful businessman who was the founder of the Hartford Music Company and Music Institute, was born in Waynesville, Missouri, in 1885.

Here are the words to the Gospel classic, 'Victory in Jesus':

"I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

Refrain:
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't
To me the victory.

[Refrain]

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.

[Refrain]"

"Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There's pow'r in the blood, pow'r in the blood;
Would you o'er evil a victory win?
There's wonderful pow'r in the blood.

Refrain:
"There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'r
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'r
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

"Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There's pow'r in the blood, pow'r in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary's tide;
There's wonderful pow'r in the blood.

[Refrain]

Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There's pow'r in the blood, pow'r in the blood;
Sin-stains are lost in its life-giving flow;
There's wonderful pow'r in the blood.

[Refrain]

Would you do service for Jesus your King?
There's pow'r in the blood, pow'r in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There's wonderful pow'r in the blood.

[Refrain]"
5. Find the missing word for this old-time hymn: 'How _____ Thou Art'

Answer: Great

The full title of the old-time classic Gospel hymn is 'How Great Thou Art'. The hymn was originally written in Swedish before being translated into a number of other languages, including English. Carl Gustav Boberg wrote the original lyrics in 1885. British missionary Stuart K. Hine is credited with translating the hymn into English. According to various websites, Hine used the Russian translation of the hymn for his English version and added two verses as well. Helping 'How Great Thou Art' become popular around the world is the fact it was performed by the likes of George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during Billy Graham crusades.

Here are the words to classic hymn 'How Great Thou Art':

"O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Refrain:
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

[Refrain]

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

[Refrain]

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: 'My God, how great Thou art!'

[Refrain]"
6. Find the missing word for this old-time hymn: '_______ of Ages'

Answer: Rock

'Rock' is the missing word in the hymn title. Agustus Toplady wrote the very popular hymn in 1763 when a sudden rainstorm in the Mendip Hills of England forced him to take refuge in a gap in a rockface.

'Rock of Ages' has been recorded by a number of big-name musicians, including Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Pat Boone and Rosemary Clooney.

Here are the words to the old-time hymn 'Rock of Ages':

"Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee."

When nothing else could help
Love lifted me!

All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I'll cling

Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.

[Refrain]

Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
