Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these lyrics finishes this line: "And you can bundle up your feelings, Hang them in the closet until you need them again. All of us broken-hearted young lovers, Oh, we'll search for one another ___ ___ _____ ___"?

Answer: 'til the world ends

Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron formed this beloved pop-rock trio better know as Three Dog Night in Los Angeles, California, in 1968. From 1969-1975, the group had twelve consecutive gold albums, which included 21 hit singles, with eleven of those singles making the top ten.

"'Til the World Ends" was the group's last charted hit in 1975. While the song only got as high as number 32, in my humble opinion, it is one of the group's most beautifully arranged productions.
2. In 1988, this former 1960's supergroup had an extremely minor hit with a song entitled "Got It Made", who was this band?

Answer: Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

With sweet harmonies and strong political statements within their lyrics, Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and Neil Young, who joined the band in 1970) were one of the premiere groups to come out of Woodstock and rival the popularity of the Beatles in the late 1960's. The group was formed in Laurel Canyon, California from, not two, but three very popular '60's bands, The Hollies (to which Graham Nash was a member), The Byrds (a band that David Crosby was in), and Buffalo Springfield (the 'home' of Stephen Stills). Many of their songs like "Woodstock", "Teach Your Children", and "Ohio", and their seminal album, 'Deja Vu', they woke up a nation to ask the question "Why?" of their government for some of their foreign and domestic policies. They were among the recognized leaders of the 1960's counter-culture movement.

Those days had long passed them by, however, when the group reunited with Neil Young on the album 'American Dream', in 1988. While they saw it become a Top 20 hit, when it peaked at number 16, the lone single from the album, entitled "Got It Made", only charted as high as number 69. In fact, in 1991, Jimmie Guterman and Owen O'Donnell, authors of the book, 'The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time', ranked 'American Dream' as the fourth worst album ever, which is truly a shame. For those who love CSNY, "Got It Made" is a real gem that got overlooked on this album and should've charted higher, in my opinion.
3. This former Beatle had a top 20 hit with a song called "Dark Horse" in 1974, which one was it?

Answer: George Harrison

George Harrison released the album 'Dark Horse' in 1974 and the title cut went all the way to number 15. Harrison enjoyed a pretty good solo career after the Beatles broke up in 1970 scoring number 1 hits in the U.S. with songs such as "Give Me Love", "My Sweet Lord", and "Got My Mind Set On You".

He was instrumental in putting together The Concert for Bangladesh, in 1971, becoming the first major rock star to have organized a concert for charity long before Live Aid or Farm Aid came along. Harrison was also known as a founding member of the group The Traveling Wilburys in the late 1980's, which also featured Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and former ELO guitarist/vocalist, Jeff Lynne.
4. In the Rod Stewart song "Passion", he mentions several cities. Which one of these places is NOT in the song?

Answer: Los Angeles

This pop-rock singer/songwriter from Highgate, London, England was a former member of the Jeff Beck Group (1967-69), as well as an ex-member of the group Faces (1969-75) who went on, and continues, to have extraordinary solo career. Whether he is singing rocking out to his original material, teaming up with some of the industry's biggest stars for a duet, or taking on old standards from the '30's, '40's, and '50's, Rod Stewart is an international superstar with few equals.

In 1980, Rod climbed as high as number five with his song "Passion", which stayed on the U.S. Billboard charts for 17 weeks. In the song, he names six cities and they are, New York, Moscow, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, and Bangkok. Los Angeles didn't make the cut.
5. What is the name of the Jackson Browne song which contains these lyrics: "Running into the midnight, With her clothes whipping in the wind. Reaching into the heart of the darkness For the tenderness within. Stumblin' into the lights of the city And then back in the shadows again. Hangin' on to the laughter That each of us hid our unhappiness in"?

Answer: "That Girl Could Sing"

Born on an army base in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1948, and raised in Los Angeles, California, Jackson Browne is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist who became a vocal activist against nuclear power beginning in the late 1970's. And, while his songs could be a bit preachy at times, Jackson did have a lighter side.

He displayed this in 1980, on the song "That Girl Could Sing", which he took to number 22 on the U.S. Billboard charts that year.
6. What was the name of the place where the couple go to have their tryst in the song "Third Rate Romance": "And they left the bar, They got in his car And they drove away. He drove to the _______ Inn. She didn't even have to pretend She didn't know what for."?

Answer: Family

This country/rock group from Memphis, Tennessee took their only U.S. Billboard Pop Singles hit to number 14, in 1975. The place where the lovers went to was called The Family Inn.
7. The song "Autobahn" was a top 30 hit for the group, Kraftwerk, in 1975.

Answer: True

Formed in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1970, Kraftwerk was a progressive rock band which used synthisizers very heavily in their music. While they had a few hits on the U.S. R&B charts during the early 1980's like "Numbers" and "Trans-Europe Express", this song about driving on the famous German highway was their only hit to chart on the U.S. Billboard Pop Singles chart.

It got as high as number 25, in 1975.
8. "Walks Like A Lady" was a song done by Donnie Iris in 1981.

Answer: False

Neal Schon, Gregg Rollie, Ross Valory, Steve Smith, and Steve Perry formed the group Journey in the mid-'70's and were the performers of the song "Walks Like A Lady", in 1980, not Donnie Iris. The song only went as high as number 32 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Singles chart and can be found on the group's 1980 album, 'Departure'.
9. "I Just Want to Make Love to You" was done by which of the following groups?

Answer: Foghat

Formed in England by Rod Price, Craig MacGregor, Roger Earl and 'Lonesome' Dave Peverett in the early 1970's, Foghat only produced one top 20 hit in the United States, which was "Slow Ride", but was extremely popular during the arena rock movement of the mid to late '70's. "I Just Want to Make Love to You" can in at number 33, in 1977.
10. To what song do the following lyrics belong: "But, sometimes a fool Gets lucky and wins. Sometimes the innocent pay For an old man's sin But, when the amber light of daylight's gone All I wanna feel is..."?

Answer: "The Beat of A Heart"

The lyrics to this song belong to Scandal's "The Beat of A Heart", which just missed cracking the Billboard Pop Singles top 40, in 1985, topping out at number 41. The group was formed in New York City in the early 1980's and featured the vocal talents of Patty Smyth, who was asked to join Van Halen after David Lee Roth quit the group and Scandal disbanded.
11. What is the correct word that belongs in this lyric: "Oooh, baby, you couldn't have done a worse thing to me If you'da taken a/an _____ and run it right through me"?

Answer: arrow

From The Beatles to Wings, Paul McCartney has been one of the most influential and prolific singer/songwriters in Rock and Roll history. After leaving the Beatles in 1970, McCartney scored nine number one hits on the U.S. Billboard charts from, 1971-1983.

The song above was not one of them, however. The words that complete the lyric are 'an arrow' and it is from the song "Arrow Through Me", which McCartney was only able to get to as high as number 29 during the Summer of 1979.
12. What is the correct word that completes this lyric: "I don't know when to start or when to stop. My luck's like a button, I can't stop pushing it. My head feels light, But I'm still in the dark. Seems like without __________ there's something missing"?

Answer: tenderness

The word that belongs in the blank is 'tenderness' from the 1985 General Public song of the same name.

Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, who were both former members of English Beat, joined Kevin White, Mickey Billingham, Horace Panter, and Stoker to start the group in the mid-'80's. "Tenderness" only got as high as number 27 on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart and two years later the group disbanded.
13. One hit wonder, Steve Forbert, sang which one of these tunes?

Answer: "Romeo's Tune"

Singer/songwriter/guitarist, Steve Forbert, took his one hit, "Romeo's Theme", to number 11 on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart, in 1980.
14. In the song "Life Is A Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)", one of the last lines in the song mentions a few record labels by name. Which one of these labels was NOT named?

Answer: Arista

This studio group made up of former Ohio Express member, Joey Levine, along with Marc Bellack, Paul DiFranco, and Norman Dolph, was called Reunion and they took "Life Is A Rock" all the way to the number eight position on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart, in 1974.

The song was more of a rap than the normal song you'd hear during that time and that's what made it so fun to listen to. Similair to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" in the late 1980's, "Life Is A Rock" was a fun ride through some of the biggest names in and events in pop culture up to that point in the mid-70's.
15. Which of these groups did the song, "Another Park, Another Sunday"?

Answer: The Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers, pre-Michael McDonald, took this smooth and mellow song only as high as number 32 on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart, in 1974. It was a cut from their album, 'What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits', which also produced the group's first U.S. number one hit, "Black Water".
16. Fill in the missing word to this song" "And, I'm not missing a thing Watching the full moon crossing the range. Riding the ______ out"?

Answer: storm

REO Speedwagon had a lot of hits during their early '80's run; in fact, their album, 'High Fidelity', released at the end of 1980, produced the band's first number one single on the U.S. charts, which was "Keep On Loving You". However, their song "Riding the Storm Out", which came out in 1974, could only get as high as number 94 on the charts. Classic rock stations will play it from time to time, though.
17. Which one of these songstresses had a minor hit with the song "Le Bel Age" in 1986?

Answer: Pat Benatar

Born in 1953 with her given name, Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Pat Benatar would go on to become one of rock and roll's most successful artists, regardless of gender.

Her 1986 album, 'Seven the Hard Way', produced three hits on the U.S. charts, "Invincible", which went to number 10, "Sex As A Weapon", which climbed to number 28, and "Le Bel Age", which only got as high as number 54.
18. "I'd Love to Change the World" was done by which one of these bands?

Answer: Ten Years After

The blues/rock group, The Jaybirds, was formed in Nottingham, England in 1962. After several membership and name changes, the band finally settled in as four man band and took the name Ten Years After.

The band's biggest, and only, hit in America was "I'd Love to Change the World", which just made the Billboard top 40, in 1971, coming in at number 40.
19. Is the capitalized word at the end of the following lyrics the correct one for this particular song: "The color of the sky as far as I can see Is coal grey. Lift my head from the pillow And then fall again. With a shiver in my bones just thinking About the KISSES"?

Answer: no

"Weather" is the correct word to finish this song by 10,000 Maniacs. The song is called "Like the Weather" and is from their 1987 album entitled, "In My Tribe". The song only got as high as number 68.
20. Are the capitalized words in the following lyrics the correct ones: "So, now, you're gonna shoot bullets of fire. Don't want to fight, but sometimes you've got to. You're some sole survivor. There's just one thing you've got to know You've got ten more thousand miles to go Because you're one of the LIVING And, if we can't stick together One of the LIVING Who's gonna make it tonight"?

Answer: Yes

The capitalized words are the correct ones in this 1985 song by Tina Turner called "One of the Living". The song is from the movie "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" and it got as high as number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart; however, it was the other song from that movie which was the more successful one. That song, "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome), got all the way to number two that year.
