Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Between 1970 and 1977, how many singles did Bread have on the Billboard Hot 100 charts?

Answer: 13

These singles included such classics as 'Make It with You', 'Baby I'm a Want You' and 'Everything I Own'. They also released six original albums, five of them entering the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Their first album, 'Bread', reached number 127.
2. Only one Bread single reached the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts. Which track was it?

Answer: Make It with You

Yes, surprisingly, 'Make It with You' (1970) was the only number one hit in the US for this band--a spot they never achieved in the UK. 'Make It with You' only reached number five in the UK.
3. Where did the band Bread originate?

Answer: Los Angeles, California

Bread formed in 1969 in Los Angeles. They released their first single 'Dismal Day' in June of that year.
4. Who wrote most of the songs for Bread that placed on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts?

Answer: David Gates

David Gates wrote and sang on eleven of the records that entered the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1970 and 1973. Jimmy Griffin also wrote many of the songs for the band, but these were usually relegated to the B-side of the singles, which caused a lot of tension between David Gates and Jimmy Griffin.
5. Which record label did Bread sign for in 1968?

Answer: Elektra

OK, I know the name Bread wasn't actually used until 1969, but David Gates, Jimmy Griffin and Rob Royer signed with Elektra Records in 1968. They then chose the name Bread.
6. How many members were originally in the group Bread?

Answer: 3

David Gates, Rob Royer, and Jimmy Griffin were the original three members. Mike Botts joined in 1970. Rob Royer left the band and was replaced by Larry Knechtel in 1971.
7. In 1974, Bread split up only to reunite a bit later--but in what year did they re-form?

Answer: 1976

Bread split in 1974 due to 'fatigue' and 'personal problems'. They re-formed two years later and released their last original album, 'Lost Without Your Love', in 1977 in the US.
8. Which member of Bread did not feature on the 1978 'David Gates and Bread' tour?

Answer: Jimmy Griffin

Jimmy Griffin and David Gates had a falling-out in 1977 during the tour to promote the album 'Lost Without Your Love'. This led to the second half of the tour being completed without Jimmy Griffin. David Gates continued to tour with Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel as 'David Gates and Bread', resulting in a lawsuit brought by Jimmy Griffin, who was a co-owner of the band's name.

This was not resolved until 1984.
9. David Gates and Jimmy Griffin settled their differences and Bread re-formed for one last time, a '25th Anniversary' tour. In which year did this occur?

Answer: 1996

This tour took place in North America (US), South Africa, Europe and Asia. After the tour, the members all went their separate ways.
10. Before Bread was formed, Rob Royer was a member of another band. David Gates produced and arranged this band's first album, and the name of the album is the same as the group that recorded it. What was the name?

Answer: The Pleasure Fair

Jimmy Griffin and Mike Botts died from cancer in 2005, both of them reaching the age of 61. Larry Knechtel died of a heart attack at the age of 69 in August 2009, which left David Gates and Rob Royer as the last surviving original members of Bread.
