Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is an often played, often required and usually most often hated audition piece for trombone in the USA?

Answer: Guilmant's 'Morceau Symphonique'

Yes, we know its true. Any audition requirement that includes 'Morceau' makes us cringe.
2. Which arranger and trombone player arranged the Telemann Sonatas, and the famous 'Melodious Etudes for Trombone'?

Answer: Joannes Rochut

We know them, we love them. If you ever get a chance, buy the second and third volumes for some good legato challenges.
3. Who wrote 'Sonata Vox Gabriel'?

Answer: Sulek

Rated number one in a survey of who plays what for their senior recitals.
4. Which piece by Paul Creston, although a recent composition, has become a popular and oft-performed concerto?

Answer: 'Fantasy for Trombone'

This is a GREAT piece. Joe Alessi has recorded an exclusive ITA copy of it, and it has been commercially released by Christian Lindberg on his 'American Trombone Concertos Vol. 1' CD.
5. Which composer listed below wrote a concerto which requires the player to have a range from pedal F, to high Eb (that's a fourth above high Bb). (Hint: its modern)?

Answer: Carlos Chavez

Yes, this piece has a solo gliss from Eb within the staff, to 2 octaves above it. Shortly after the opening it does have a passage which goes down to pedal F, and is marked fortissimo possible.
6. The highest note in the solo in the REAL version of Tommy Dorsey's 'I'm Getting Sentimental over You' is?

Answer: C sharp

7. Which recent trombone concerto won the Pulitzer Prize?

Answer: Rouse's 'Trombone Concerto'

8. The famous trombone soloist Christian Lindbergh recently composed his own trombone concerto titled?

Answer: 'Mandrake in the Corner'

9. Which symphony has the longest trombone solo in all of classical literature?

Answer: Mahler's Third

Mahler's Third has THE most extensive trombone solo in the literature, all contained in the 32 minute long first movement. Mozart's Requiem does contain a short, but extremely important and often tested solo, but it is not a symphony. Beethoven's Ninth is (thought) to be the first symphony to contain trombone writing, and it contains many fun parts, but no important solos. Dvorak's eight will never appear on an orchestral audition, but it contains many short, fun solos (mostly fortissimo too!).
10. This foundation has commissioned and taken some part in the writing of many trombone works?

Answer: International Trombone Association

Commonly reffered to as the ITA, the International Trombone Association has commissioned many composers to write concertos and solos for the trombone.
11. Which piece contains a first trombone solo glissando from high G to high C, and ends on Gb?

Answer: 'The Firebird'

All of the above pieces contain glisses for all or one of the trombones. However, only 'The Firebird' (Stravinsky), contains a solo gliss from G to C to G (it also has a number of glisses for all three trombones later in the piece). ('Bolero' has a solo gliss from high Bb to high Db, 'Concerto for Orchestra' has a bass trombone solo gliss from low B to F, and a second trombone solo gliss an octave higher, and 'The Rite of Spring', has ensemble glisses from E to Bb, and the same an octave higher).
12. Which composer wrote most of his first trombone parts with the Alto Trombone in mind (Although they are rarely played on the alto nowadays)?

Answer: Brahms

Most of Brahms' works that contain trombones are written in alto clef and with the alto trombone written in the part. However, unless a conductor especially wants the alto trombone sound, rarely are his pieces played on the alto.
13. Trills rarely appear in trombone music, because of the difficulty in executing them. Which of the following pieces contains a passage with important trills for the whole trombone section?

Answer: Kodaly's 'Hary Janos Suite'

The fourth movement of Kodaly's piece, which is written ONLY for trumpets, trombones, flutes, and assorted percussion, contains two sections of tutti fortissimo trills.
14. Which jazz trombonist has written very little music, but is most known for his phenomenal range, use of 'doodle' tonguing, and pure sound?

Answer: Bill Watrous

All I have to say is shame on you if you answered Tito Puente.
15. Especially in early jazz (i.e. dixieland and New Orleans jazz), the trombone was thought as what type of instrument?

Answer: A background instrument, which provided harmonic and rhythmic support
