She wore an "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" sang Brian Hyland all the way to number one for one week on the US pop chart in 1960. It reached number eight on the UK chart. It was his only US number one and he never hit the top in the UK.

Bobby Rydell had his highest US pop chart hit in 1960 with "Wild One" at number two. It was also his highest UK chart hit at number seven. Bobby Vee had his first US top ten hit at number six on the pop chart with "Devil Or Angel" in 1960. It never charted in the UK. Johnny Burnette reached number eight on the US pop chart in 1960 with "You're Sixteen". It reached number three on the UK chart in 1961, his highest hit on both charts.

"I'm Sorry" was the song, Brenda Lee was the singer. A US number one pop hit for three weeks, it reached number 12 on the UK chart. Brenda Lee, the number one female singer of the '60s has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Connie Francis,(possibly Brenda Lee's biggest rival on the US pop charts in the late '50s and early '60s) had two number one hits in 1960. "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" for two weeks and "My Heart Has A Mind Of It's Own" for two weeks. They reached number five and number three on the UK chart. Actress/singer Connie Stevens had a number three hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Sixteen Reasons", it reached number nine on the UK chart. Wanda Jackson had a number 37 on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Let's Have a Party" backed by Gene Vincents' Blue Caps. It reached number 32 on the UK chart.

Answer: Mark Dinning

One of the so called "Death Songs", popular at the time. Mark Dinning sang of his "Teen Angel" who ran back to a car stalled on a rail crossing to look for his high school ring, just as the train arrived. It reached number one for two weeks on the US pop chart, it was his only US top 40 hit. It reached number 37 in the UK and was his only UK chart hit ever.

Del Shannon sang "The Prom", a track from his first album "Runaway" in 1961. In the song he comes across a road crash, then finds that it was his girlfriend who was involved and she dies in his arms. It was never released as a single. Johnny Preston sang "Running Bear" a song about Running Bear and his girlfriend Little White Dove. They both lost their lives trying to swim across a raging river to be with each other. It was a number one on the US pop chart for three weeks and a UK number one for two weeks in 1960.
Ray Peterson sang "Tell Laura I Love Her". Tommy wants to buy Laura a wedding ring, so he enters a stock car race to win the $1000 prize but gets killed. Before the race he phoned Laura but she is not there so asks her mother to "Tell Laura I Love Her". It was a number seven on the US pop chart in 1960 but failed to score in the UK. British singer Ricky Valance had a UK number one with the song but it never charted in the US.

"Georgia On My Mind" sang Ray Charles, all the way to number one for one week on the US pop chart. It reached number 24 on the UK chart.

Sam Cooke had a number two hit on the US pop chart with "Chain Gang" in 1960. It reached number nine on the UK chart. Brook Benton had a number seven hit with "Kiddio" on the US pop chart in 1960. It reached number 41 on the UK chart. Jackie Wilson had a number four hit with "Night" on the US pop chart in 1960, it did not chart in the UK.

Charlie Rich had a number 22 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Lonely Weekends". It never charted in the UK. Chuck Berry had a number 64 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Let It Rock". It reached number six on the UK chart in 1963 as a double A-side with "Memphis Tennessee". Ricky Nelson, still with a "y", had a number 12 hit on the US chart in 1960 with "Young Emotions". It reached number 48 on the UK chart.

Answer: The Drifters

The Drifters sang "Save The Last Dance For Me" and had a number one for three weeks on the US pop chart in 1960. It reached number two on the UK chart, it was their only number one on either side of the pond.

Dion and The Belmonts had a number 30 on the US pop chart in 1960 with "When You Wish Upon A Star". It never charted in the UK. Dion went solo later in 1960. The Miracles entered the US pop chart late in 1960 with "Shop Around". It reached number two the following year but did not chart in the UK. The Miracles never had any UK hits until 1966, (what were we thinking of). Little Anthony and The Imperials had a number 86 on the US chart in 1960 with "My Empty Room", it never charted in the UK. They had one UK hit in 1976, reaching number 42 with "Better Use Your Head". It reached number 54 on the US pop chart in 1966.

Come on baby, let's do "The Twist" sang Chubby Checker, it spent one week at the top of the US pop chart in 1960. It was re-released and went to the top again in 1962, for two weeks this time. In the UK it reached number 44 in 1960, number 14 in 1962 and number five in 1975.

Hank Ballard wrote the lyrics to "The Twist" (the melody is the same as "WhatCha Gonna Do", a 1955 R&B hit for Clyde McPhatter and The Drifters). It was on the B-side of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters' 1959 US hit "Teardrops On Your Letter" which reached number 87 on the US pop chart. It entered the US pop chart as the A-side in 1960, before Chubby Checkers' version but only climbed to number 28. Hank Ballard and The Midnighters never had any chart hits in the UK.
Danny and The Juniors had a number 27 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Twistin' U.S.A.", it never charted in the UK. Santo and Johnny had a number 49 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Twistin' Bells", it never entered the UK chart.

Please "Mr. Custer" I don't want to go, sang Larry Verne in 1960. It went all the way to number one on the US pop chart for one week. It never entered the UK chart.

Johnny Horton had a number three hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Sink The Bismarck" It did not chart in the UK. Marty Robbins had a number 34 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Ballad Of The Alamo". It did not chart in the UK.

The Hollywood Argyles sang "Alley Oop" and took their version to number one on the US pop chart for one week in 1960. It reached number 24 on the UK chart. The Hollywood Argyles was Gary Paxton, who was Flip of the duo Skip and Flip. The name was made up from the street sign Hollywood & Argyle, a group was formed after the record became a hit.

Dante and The Evergreens version of "Alley Oop" entered the US pop chart on the same day as The Hollywood Argyles version but stuck at number 15. It did not chart in the UK. The Dyna-Sores version of "Alley Oop" reached number 59 on the US pop chart but did not chart in the UK. The Olympics did not record "Alley-Oop" you will be glad to note. They had a number 50 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Big Boy Pete". It did not chart in the UK.
10. Who wanted their girl to hang around a lot longer, with these lyrics? "Won't you place your sweet lips to mine Won't you say you love me, all of the time"

Answer: Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs

"Stay" was Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs plea in 1960. They took it to the number one spot on the US pop chart for one week. It reached number 14 on the UK chart in 1961.

The Fendermen had a number five hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Mule Skinner Blues. It reached number 32 on the UK chart. The Coasters had a number 51 hit in 1960 on the US pop chart with "Wake Me, Shake Me" It never charted in the UK. The Four Preps had a number 24 hit on the US pop chart in 1960 with "Got A Girl". It reached number 28 on the UK chart.
