Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Eleanor Rigby" is a story about an old lonely woman. She dies and Father Mackenzie buries her, with no one there attending the funeral. How sad. However, before she bit the dust, Eleanor Rigby was wearing a face she kept in a jar. Weird, yes, but where was the jar kept?

Answer: By the door

No one knows who the jar is for, but whoever it is for may be a very strange person. Anyway, this song has gained major popularity over the years. Former president Bill Clinton claimed this was his favorite Beatles song. "Eleanor Rigby" was released off "Revolver" (1966) and hit number 11 on the US Charts.

Interestingly enough, this song doesn't have any members of the Beatles playing instruments; instead all the music came from string players who came into the studio as session players.
2. "Maggie Mae" is a prostitute in this Beatles song. Mae has been caught stealing items from a homeward bounder and has been convicted of the crime. But the singer also mentions where Mae worked/lived. What street does she work on?

Answer: Lime Street

This song was released off the Beatles last album (to be released that is) "Let It Be" (1970). "Maggie" is British slang for prostitute. Rod Stewart wrote a song called "Maggie May", and his version was about the first girl he slept with. Pretty much the same idea of both songs (a woman who's had a sex life), the only difference is that Stewart's is spelled differently from the Beatles'.
3. "Martha My Dear" was a song written to express what a "muse" was- a voice in his head that told him what words and music to write. The song was named after what?

Answer: Paul's dog

Paul had a sheepdog named Martha and the song was named after her (even though the song has nothing to do with Martha at all). Also an interesting footnote is that George played bass on this piece while usually Paul plays bass and George plays guitar. This song came off "The White Album" (1968).
4. "Lovely Rita" is a meter maid, and the man in the song has fallen in love with her. The man sees Rita filling in a ticket in her little book. What color was the book?

Answer: White

When Paul wrote this song, he was originally was going to write it about scolding meter maids for writing tickets, but then turned it into a cheerful song. Paul and producer George Martin played the piano; Martin played the honky-tonk sounding piece in the middle of the tune. "Lovely Rita" came off "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967).
5. "Dear Prudence" was inspired by Prudence Farrow, sister of Mia Farrow. Who played drums on this song?

Answer: Paul McCartney

During sessions for "The White Album", things got tense and Ringo left the band for a while, which lead to Paul playing the drums. Ringo came back, fortunately, a short time after. This song was inspired by Prudence Farrow after she met John on a spiritual retreat in India.

When Prudence was feeling down and upset, John wrote this song for her to cheer her up. "Dear Prudence" came from "The White Album", if you didn't already figure that out.
6. "Julia" was written by John and is dedicated to Yoko Ono (John's second wife) and his mother, Julia. Also, there is something interesting about this song. What is it?

Answer: John recorded the song by himself

John recorded this song live and plays the acoustic guitar and vocals on it, with an occasional overdub on the vocals. This is the only song that John did completely on his own during his time with the Beatles. It is such a sad and moving song, I believe one of the most underrated songs in the band's history. The song came from "The White Album" (1968).
7. "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is a wild fantasy song that John's son, Julian, inspired. The images Lennon used in the tune were based on what famous book?

Answer: Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

According to songfacts.com, Lennon got some of ideas for the lyrics out of the famous book by Lewis Carroll. Many people thought this song was about drugs ('L'ucy in the 'S'ky with 'D'iamonds... LSD). This song was banned by the BBC because they thought the song was drug references. John denied that the song is about drugs. "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was released off "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967).
8. "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" is about a girl who broke into a man's house. What did the girl tell the man her occupation was?

Answer: Dancer

"She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" is one in a slew of songs at the end of "Abbey Road" (1969). Paul wrote this song about a fan that broke into his house. Diane Ashley claimed that she was the fan. Something unusual about this song is that Paul played lead guitar and George played bass, when on most songs, it was the other way around.
9. "Polythene Pam" is so good looking but she looks like a man (if that makes sense). John seems to have a crush on her, but we learn that Pam has a brother in another song. Who's Pam's brother?

Answer: Mr. Mustard

"Polythene Ram" and "Mean Mr. Mustard" are songs that are both part of a slew of songs at the end of "Abbey Road" (1969). John sung "Polythene Pam" in a thick Liverpool accent, unlike most of his songs that sound very American (like all of the other Beatles). "Mean Mr. Mustard" was a song written based on a newspaper article that John read.

The article was about a mean man who hid his money.
10. "Lady Madonna" was a song written by Paul to a tribute to women everywhere. The song was inspired by a painting of an African woman holding her child over the caption of "Mountain Madonna". What number did it reach in the US Billboard charts?

Answer: Number Four

It hit #1 in the UK, like most Beatles songs do. I hope you enjoyed my quiz, and thank you women for inspiring many great songs from the Beatles.
