Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are three basic types of welding. One type is called "TIG" welding. What does the abbreviation "TIG" represent?

Answer: Tungsten Inert Gas

TIG welding is done by producing an electric arc between a tungsten electrode and the metal to be welded. Argon gas is used to shield the electrode and the weld pool. Sometimes a filler rod is used.
2. Another type of welding is called "MIG" welding. MIG stands for:

Answer: Metal Inert Gas

In a MIG welder, a wire is fed from a spool continuously through the torch. An arc is formed between the wire and the metal to be welded. Argon gas and CO2 mix is used to shield the arc and the weld pool.
3. During the process of welding a deposit of metal is left on the material. What is this deposit called?

Answer: A Bead

There are several types of beads. A weave, fillet and a straight bead are three of the basic beads.
4. Another type of welding is called "Stick" welding. This welding process uses a flux covered electrode to produce the weld. What is the holder that holds the electrode known as?

Answer: The stinger (or one rod holder)

The stinger is connected to the electrode cable by copper sleeve tightener inside a hard insulated handle. The holder is built to hold the electrode tightly and also make it easy to change the electrodes.
5. Welders use electrical currents to produce the power that welds the metal together. A.C. and D.C are two types of welding currents. What do these terms represent?

Answer: Alternating Current and Direct Current

Direct current travels in one direction, from negative to positive. It flows at the same strength until turned off. It loses energy if it travels a long distance. Alternating current moves in one direction, but the electrons change from one direction to the next at a rate of sixty cycles per second. This increases the strength, to enable it to travel long distances.
6. The process of electric welding produces a brilliant light that will burn the eyes if not protected. What do welders use to protect their eyes?

Answer: A welding helmet

Welders use a helmet with a dark lens. The lenses vary in shades of darkness, because the brightness of the light produced varies with the type of metal being welded. The helmet also reflects the UV rays, to prevent burning of facial skin.
7. The electrodes that are used with arc welders are numbered. e.g. 7018-1/8. What do the numbers represent?

Answer: Strength, position, type of covering and diameter

The number 70 represents the minimum tensile strength of deposited metal in as-welded condition, which in this case is 70,000 PSI. The number 1 following the number 70, suggests that the weld can be done in all positions, horizontal, vertical and overhead. The 8 means low hydrogen flux covering. Finally, the 1/8 is the diameter of the electrode, 1/8 of an inch. A welder must understand these numbers to know which is the proper rod to use for the specific job.
8. To become a journeyman welder, you have to know the structure of metal. What is the term used to describe the study of metal?

Answer: Metallurgy

Metallurgy is the science of removing metals from their ores to enable them to used in industry. Metallography is the branch of metallurgy which deals with the study of metal and the structure of its alloys.
9. Austenitic stainless steel and mild steel cannot be welded using the same procedure. What common method is used to differentiate between the two?

Answer: A magnet

A magnet will not stick to austenitic stainless steel, but it sticks to mild steel. Other metals that a magnet won't stick to are aluminum, brass and copper.
10. MIG welders use wire that is rolled on a reel. The welder pushes the wire through a liner and out the end of a gun. Which of these are not a type of MIG gun?

Answer: Shotgun

The push-pull gun has a motor in the handle, which pulls the wire, as well as a motor in the welder, that pushes the wire. The wire is on a large spool that is held in the machine. The spool gun has a motor in the handle which pulls the wire from a small spool of wire that is also in the handle.

The whip gun has only a motor in the machine which pushes the wire from a large spool in the welder.
