So who was the man that followed with similar wins in Australia in 1970, and a brilliant victory at Wimbledon as a rank outsider in 1975?

Answer: Arthur Ashe

Arthur Ashe became the first African-American male tennis player to win major tennis tournaments. This great role-model's finest moment came with the Wimbledon victory in four sets against the dominant world number-one Jimmy Connors. He seemed to have little chance in the match dubbed "The attraction of opposites" which pointed to a stark difference in demeanor, with the mild mannered Ashe up against the self-opinionated Connors. For a number of reasons this has gone down as one of the most popular Wimbledon victories.

While on the subject of first-time champions, let's not forget the great tennis player Althea Gibson who was the first African-American of either gender,to win major tournaments with wins in France, The US, and Wimbledon between 1956 and 1958 in the amateur era. Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. passed away on the 6th February 1993 aged 49 as the result of HIV contracted from a blood transfusion in the early 80s.

In 1997 the tennis world honoured this great ambassador with the opening of the Arthur Ashe Stadium where the US open is now being played as of 2018. Was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.
