Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Call Me Al. I was the cartoonist who drew "Li'l Abner". My last name is the same as another cartoon character named "Andy". I am Al who?

Answer: Capp

Al Capp was introduced to drawing as a form of therapy after his leg was amputated above the knee, following an accident with a trolley car at the age of nine. Andy Capp is a British comic strip created by cartoonist Reg Smythe.
2. Call Me Al. At the peak of my career, I was known as "The World's Greatest Entertainer". I was born Asa Yoelson in Russia, circa 1886. Who am I?

Answer: Al Jolson

Al Jolson's first film, "The Jazz Singer", was also the first full-length "talking picture". Al Jolson's famous line, as Jack Robin, "You ain't heard nothin' yet", was an ad-lib. He used this line in his stage act. The film was intended to have music only and no speech. Sam Warner, of Warner Brothers, however, insisted that Al Jolson's ad-libbed speech be included in the movie, earning him the nickname of "Father of the Talkies".
3. My real name was Alphonse, but you can call me Al. One of the most notorious American gangsters of the 20th century, I was charged with tax evasion in 1931. I am Alphonse Gabriel who?

In the "roaring twenties", Al Capone ruled an empire of crime in Chicago: gambling, prostitution, bootlegging, bribery, narcotics trafficking, robbery, "protection" rackets, and murder. The F.B.I. had no jurisdiction over prohibition violations; that fell to the Bureau of Prohibition. Tax evasion, however, was a Federal offence and it took a team of federal, state, and local authorities to end Capone's reign as underworld boss. Alphonse Mucha was a Czech Art Nouveau artist. Alphonse Gangitano was an Italian-Australian criminal from Melbourne. Alphonse Karr is a plant, a type of bamboo, bambusa multiplex.

Answer: Al Pacino

This was one of the most sought after roles of the time: Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Ryan O'Neal, Robert De Niro and a host of others either wanted it or were mentioned for it. The director, Francis Ford Coppola wanted Al Pacino for the role.

It earned Al Pacino his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Pacino subsequently appeared in films he considered to be important, such as "Serpico" (1973) and "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975). He was nominated three consecutive years for the "Best Actor" Academy Award.
7. Call Me Al. My first name is really Albert. I was Vice President of the United States of America from 1993 until 2001. I received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2007. Who am I? Al?

Answer: Gore

Answer: Johnny Fontane

In November 1952, the first UK record chart was published in the "New Musical Express". Al Martino became the first artist to have a No. 1 single in the U.K. charts and in fact the only record to make No. 1 in 1952, with "Here In My Heart".
10. "You Can Call Me Al" is a song from the album "Graceland" by Paul who?

Answer: Simon

Apparently, Paul Simon was at a party with his then-wife Peggy Harper when someone called him "Al" and Peggy "Betty". The name mix-up inspired the song. When they recorded the tracks for this song in South Africa, Simon and his producers were sure they had a hit with this song. Al Gore takes to the stage in Wheeling, West Virginia, on 19th July 1992, during the Bill Clinton/Al Gore presidential campaign and "You Can Call Me Al" is heard in the background.
