Autherine Lucy was born on October 5, 1929 in Shiloh, Alabama, USA. She enrolled at the University of Alabama in 1956. Her application was accepted but after attending only a few classes, the authorities realised that she was not white so they rescinded her admittance. She later became an educator and professor and her expulsion was annulled in 1988 and she did a postgraduate course at the University of Alabama graduating in 1992.

Gertrude Ederle (1905-2003) was born on October 23 in New York City, USA. She was a very competative swimmer winning a gold and two bronze medals at the 1924 Olympic Games. However, it was on August 6, 1926 that she is best remembered as the first women to successfully swim the English Channel. Five men had successfully swam the English Channel before her, yet she beat their best time by nearly two hours.
