Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wilkie Collins was an English writer and close friend of Charles Dickens. For which two novels is he best known?

Answer: "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White"

"The Moonstone", published in 1868, is seen as the first English detective novel. Following the success of the two novels mentioned, Collins began adding more social commentary to his works. That, along with his increasing dependence on opium to relieve the pain of his gout, resulted in a decline in his writing.
2. While not related, Jimmy Collins and Eddie Collins were both at home in Philadelphia in 1907 and 1908. But today to see them together one would have to go where?

Answer: The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York

Born 17 years apart (Jimmy in 1870 and Eddie in 1887), both men played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1907 and 1908. Jimmy was at the end of his Hall of Fame career, while Eddie began his Hall of Fame career in Philly in 1906. The 1908 roster shows both men at 5' 9" with Eddie weighing 175 and Jimmy weighing 178. Jimmy Collins won a World Series title in 1903 with the Boston Americans, had a career batting average of .294, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1945. Eddie won four World Series championships (three times with the A's and once with the White Sox), batted .333 for his career, and went into the Hall of Fame in 1939.
3. Joan and Jackie Collins were sisters, both born in London, but becoming quite well known on both sides of the Atlantic. In which area is each best known?

Answer: Joan as an actress, Jackie as a novelist

Born in 1933, Joan Collins is best known for her role as Alexis in the TV prime time soap opera "Dynasty", which ran from 1981 to 1989. She either won or was nominated for over 15 awards for that role. She also had roles in over 65 films and appeared in over 55 TV programs beyond the "Dynasty" series.

Jackie was born in 1937. All 32 of her novels landed on the "New York Times" bestseller list, selling over 500 million copies. Published in 1983, "Hollywood Wives" was her most successful novel and reached number 1 on the bestseller list.
4. Judy Collins is one member of the clan who could be referred to as a "bird"... that is, a songbird. She earned her first Grammy in 1967 with her cover of which song, written by Joni Mitchell?

Answer: "Both Sides, Now"

Judy Collins was the first singer to record "Both Sides, Now", as Mitchell did not record it herself until 1969. Although Collins recorded all of the other songs on her albums, "Both Sides, Now" was her most successful song. "Mr. Tambourine Man" was written by Bob Dylan, "Early Morning Rain" was written by Gordon Lightfoot, and "Amazing Grace", while written by Englishman John Newton and published in 1799, is often credited as "traditional" on recordings.
5. Another Collins who made it big in the music industry is Phil, who has sold over 100 million albums and won seven Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. Although Phil is an accomplished solo artist, Wikipedia also lists ten "Associated Acts" in its capsule description of him. With which band did he make his greatest impact?

Answer: Genesis

The vocalist and drummer has had quite a career, including a checkered tableau of praise and criticism. He played and sang with Genesis from 1970 to 1978, and then on several occasions since. In 1996 he formed the Phil Collins Big Band and took it on a world tour in 1998. Throughout the 80s and 90s and into the 21st Century he recorded several successful solo albums, along with playing and singing with other groups, including several times with Genesis.
6. Two men named Michael Collins had great impact on both sides of the Atlantic. Although he was born in Rome in 1930, the American Michael Collins was the son of a career army officer. For what feat is this Michael Collins most likely best known?

Answer: Piloting the Apollo 11 Moon Capsule while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the moon

One of only 24 people to have flown to the moon, Collins graduated from West Point and then joined the Air Force. Apollo 11 was his second trip into space. While on the Gemini 10 mission in 1966, he did two EVAs (extra-vehicular activity, usually referred to as a spacewalk), thus becoming the first person to do more than one. He also has an asteroid and a lunar crater named after him.
7. Sometimes called "the Big Fellah", the Old World Michael Collins was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1890. Although he did not live to achieve the completion of his life's work, for what is he best known in his homeland?

Answer: Freeing Ireland from British rule

After his release from prison following the Easter Rising of 1916, Collins masterminded the military resistance to the British. He then led the Irish contingent in the negotiations that resulted in the Anglo-Irish Treaty which established the Irish Free State in 1921. Collins then became the de facto Prime Minister of the IFS until his assassination in his home county of Cork in 1922.
8. Bud Collins, who passed away at age 86 in March of 2016, was a journalist and television commentator for high-profile events. In what area was he best known?

Answer: Sports, especially tennis

In addition to writing sports for "The Boston Globe", he also wrote columns of general interest as well as politics and travel. He covered tennis for CBS for four years and for NBC for 35. In 2007 he began working for ESPN and covered Wimbledon and the US, French, and Australian Opens.

He has written ten books and has been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame as well as the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.
9. Ray Collins played 900 roles in theater and radio performances. He spent the last seven years of his 40-year acting career as which memorable TV character?

Answer: Lieut. Arthur Tragg on "Perry Mason"

Ray Collins performed on the radio in several programs from 1930 to 1946 and in film and TV from 1930 to 1964.

Due to declining health and memory, Collins filmed his last "Perry Mason" episode in October of 1963. However, the show's executive producer, Gail Patrick Jackson, continued to have his name in the opening sequence of each episode for the rest of that season and through the next, the program's second-to-last.
10. The youngest Collins in our quiz was born in 1962. Like our first Collins, who is the oldest on the list, Suzanne Collins is a noted writer. Which best-selling trilogy did she pen?

Answer: The Hunger Games

Suzanne Collins began her professional career as a writer for children's television. "The Hunger Games" is the first title in a trilogy of the same name and put Collins at the top of the young adult (YA) writing list. "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" are the other two titles of the trilogy. In 2012 Amazon announced that the "Hunger Games" trilogy topped the Harry Potter series as its number one seller.

"The Golden Compass" is the name by which the first book of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy was sold in North America. Its original title is "Northern Lights." "Looking Glass Wars" is by Frank Beddor and "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" is by Laini Taylor.
