Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What caused Arnold "The Brain" Rothstein to meet his maker (die)?

Answer: Murdered

Rothstein was born on January 19, 1882 in New York, New York. On November 4, 1928, he was shot during a meeting at the Park Central Hotel in Manhattan. He survived the initial shooting, but died two days later on November 6. Rothstein is famous amongst baseball fans as the mobster who paid the Chicago White Sox to lose the 1919 World Series. That event would come to be known as "The Black Sox" scandal.
2. How did Charles "Lucky" Luciano die?

Answer: Heart Attack/Stroke

Lucky was born on November 11, 1897 in Sicily, Italy. Luciano passed away from a heart attack on January 26, 1962 while walking through the Naples International Airport with American movie producer Martin Gosch. Gosch was in Italy to discuss Luciano's life for a movie he was producing about him. Unbeknownst to Luciano, Italian drug agents were following him with the intent of arresting him on drug smuggling charges. Lucky had been deported to Italy in 1946. Thomas Dewey commuted Luciano's 30-50 year sentence and had him deported to Italy because he had helped the U.S. Navy during WWII against Italy.
3. What was the cause of John "Teflon Don" Gotti's death?

Answer: Cancer

Gotti was born on October 27, 1940 in The Bronx, New York City. In 1998, Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer. The tumor was removed, but the cancer returned two years later. He passed away on June 10, 2002. Gotti was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for five murders, conspiracy to murder, loansharking, illegal gambling, obstruction of justice, bribery, and tax evasion.

It took the jury 14 hours to find him guilty of all charges. After his guilty verdict, the FBI director in New York City told the press: "Teflon Don is gone.

The don is covered with Velcro. All the charges stuck."
4. What was it that ended George "Bugs" Moran's life?

Answer: Cancer

Moran was born on August 21, 1893 in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1956, Bugs was sentenced to a 10 year sentence for robbery and was incarcerated at the Leavenworth Prison in Kansas. He died of lung cancer just a few months later on February 25, 1957. Bugs is most famous for being Al Capone's arch-enemy.

It was seven of Moran's henchmen who were murdered in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929.
5. What was the root cause of Al "Scarface" Capone's death?

Answer: Syphilis

Capone was born on January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York. Al was considered to be a modern day "Robin Hood" until he ordered the mass killing of Bugs Moran's men at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. This caused the Chicago press to nickname him "Public Enemy #1".

He was eventually sentenced to prison for tax evasion and immediately started showing signs of syphilitic dementia. After eight years in prison, he was released to go home and die. Although he passed away from a heart attack caused by a stroke, it is common knowledge that this was a direct result of lack of treatment for syphilis.

He died on January 25, 1947.
6. What brought Frank "The Prime Minister" Costello's life to an end?

Answer: Heart Attack/Stroke

Frank was born on January 26, 1891 in Calabria, Italy. He was one of the most powerful crime bosses the U.S. ever saw. Early on in his criminal career, he met and became close friends with Charlie "Lucky" Luciano. Eventually, they became partners and Costello ran Luciano's gambling ring. Costello was third in line for the mob boss job when Luciano was imprisoned and Vito Genovese was indicted and skipped out of the U.S. for Italy to avoid prosecution. Luciano then named Costello as the new Boss. On February 18, 1973, Frank passed away from a heart attack at his home in Manhattan, New York.

In 1974, one of Costello's arch enemies (Carmine Galante) hired someone to plant explosives at his mausoleum doors and blew them off for revenge. Just my opinion, but that's taking hatred/revenge to a new level.
7. How did Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel die?

Answer: Murdered

Benjamin Siegel was born on February 28, 1906 in Brooklyn, New York. He was most famous for starting the Flamingo Casino/Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. He envisioned turning this small desert town into a thriving gambling mecca. He borrowed millions from the mob to finance it and then had his girlfriend take some of the money to Switzerland for his own use.

When Lucky Luciano found out about this, he was enraged. However, they were good friends so he called Bugsy to ask for some of the $6 million he had borrowed. Bugsy basically told him to get lost and that he'd pay him when he was ready. Luciano had a contract taken out on Bugsy and a sniper put two bullets in his head, three in his upper torso, and missed with the other five shots on June 20, 1947.

He was shot while sitting in a chair talking to an associate. His girlfriend was in Paris at the time (she had told Lucky about taking the money to Switzerland when Luciano threatened to throw acid in her face if she didn't tell the truth about the money).
8. What was the cause of Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno's death?

Answer: Heart Attack/Stroke

Salerno was born on August 15, 1911 in East Harlem, New York. Fat Tony was one of the oldest men to become the head of the mob when he took over in 1981 at the age of 69. He was noted for always wearing a fedora and chewing on a cigar. He was sentenced to 70 years in prison in 1986 for racketeering and his health immediately began to diminish.

He suffered from diabetes and some thought he may have had prostate cancer. Nonetheless, he passed away on July 27, 1992 from a stroke at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri.
9. How did Vito "Don Vitone" Genovese die?

Answer: Heart Attack/Stroke

Vito was born on November 27, 1897 in Naples, Italy. He was probably the most dangerous of all the mob bosses. He was referred to as "The Boss of All Bosses" and one of the first to deal in the heroin trade. Genovese was well known for ordering the murders of opposing crime members, his own underlings, and even federal witnesses.

In April of 1959, Genovese was sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug trafficking. He died on February 14, 1969 of a heart attack.
10. How did Henry "Hymie Weiss" Wojciechowski die?

Answer: Murdered

Hymie was born on January 25, 1898 in present-day Poland. He was known as a ruthless killer and sources say he was the only man Al Capone ever feared. Weiss himself was so fearless that he chased a Federal Marshall while pointing a gun at him one time.

He shot, but did not kill his own brother, and would tell photographers that he would kill them if they took a picture of him. Although he was someone who shouldn't be messed with, he and two of his associates were killed when two gunmen opened fire on them with a sub-machine gun and a shotgun on October 11, 1926.
