Nancy Wake was born on August 30, 1912. She moved to Sydney when she was two years old. Her mother was left to bring up six children after her father left home.

She obtained false papers that allowed her to stay and work in Vichy France, and became deeply involved in helping to spirit a thousand or more escaped prisoners of war and downed Allied fliers out of France through to Spain.

Nancy Wake made six attempts to cross the Pyrenees to Spain. On one attempt she was arrested by the Vichy militia but was released after four days.

Nancy Wake stood as a Liberal candidate for the Federal elections between 1949 and 1966. She was not successful as she stood in seats that were working class and voted Labour. However, her efforts contributed up to a 13% swing against the Labour candidate.

Answer: 2004

Interestingly, Nancy Wake was revered in France as a national heroine for her Resistance work and bravery. She was awarded the Legion d'Honneur, Croix de Guerre and French Resistance Medal, Britain's George Medal and the US Medal of Freedom. However, it was not until 2004 that her war efforts were recognised in Australia.
