Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During normal forklift operation, where is the correct position to carry a load?

Answer: low to the ground.

All loads should be carried as low to the ground as possible, this provides both a low centre of gravity for the forklift and the load, better stability and better vision for the forklift operator.
2. When driving a loaded forklift down a sloped surface, which is the correct direction of travel?

Answer: backwards.

Always reverse down a slope. Even though most forklifts have a tilt function, it is most often never enough to counter the weight of the load and gravity. If you travel forwards down a slope you will usually end up with the load falling on the ground in front of you.
3. If you attempt to lift a load in your forklift and your rear wheels leave the ground, what should you do immediately?

Answer: lower the load.

The load is too heavy for the capacity of the forklift you are driving. Immediately lower the load and either lighten the load you are attempting, or find a forklift of higher lifting capacity that is capable of lifting this load.
4. Why is it important to conduct a visual inspection and fill out a forklift pre-operation checklist, check sheet or log book correctly before driving it?

Answer: to ensure it is in safe working order.

Log books and checklists are an easy way of tracking the history of problems with the forklift. They also give an indication of problems experienced by previous users of that machine, e.g. hydraulic problems, engine problems etc.
5. When a load has to be raised in the air, is it safe to walk underneath the load?

Answer: no, never.

Walking under a suspended load is a very dangerous thing to do and is very definitely not recommended. Many workplaces will ban you from site for doing this.
6. When is it very important on a forklift to sound the horn?

Answer: in each of these situations.

The use of the horn is very important when driving a forklift, particularly quiet electric operated models. This gives pedestrians, other forklift drivers and often truck drivers adequate warning of your whereabouts.
7. If you ever do tip or roll a forklift, what is the correct procedure to follow?

Answer: brace your feet wide apart and grab the steering wheel

Tragically a very young man (18) died close to where I work. He was unlicensed and was crushed when he rolled the forklift completely over. I can only guess he was going far too fast and went off the side of a ramp. If a forklift tips, STAY IN IT, a forklift has a protective cage around it for a reason. If a seatbelt is fitted, wear it. Most forklift roll-over accidents involve cornering at speed.
8. Are you allowed to raise a person in the air, who is standing on the forklift tines?

Answer: no, not at all.

This is a most definite NO. The only way a person can be raised in the air using a forklift is in an approved cage, with a harness attached. If a safety officer ever gives permission to do otherwise, then they should be sacked.
9. Where on the tines of a forklift should a load be situated?

Answer: as far back as possible.

In order for the load to be as stable as possible, the load should be as far back on the tines as the operator can get it, preferable leaning against the backrest. The further out on the tines a load is, the less weight can be carried. Also the further back the load is, the less chance of wobble and instability in the load.
10. You are in the position of being responsible for buying the new forklifts for your company. What should be your number one concern when opting for a model?

Answer: ability to do the task required safely

Unfortunately, many purchasers choose price over practicality when opting for the best forklift. While price should be a consideration, the safety of the workforce should always be the number one priority. Getting the right tool for the job is essential.
