Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Former world number one tennis player who won the 2018 Australian Open

Answer: Caroline Wozniacki

Dane Caroline Wozniacki first became world number one in 2010, but it took her a further eight years to win her first (and only) major title at the 2018 Australian Open. That win also gave her another short stint as the world's best female tennis player. Wozniacki became a professional player in 2005 at the age of 15 and was twice runner-up at the US Open (in 2009 and 2014) and a quarter-finalist at the French Open.

She announced her retirement from the sport following the 2020 Australian Open.
2. Director of the Academy Award-winning Danish film 'In a Better World'

Answer: Susanne Bier

Susanne Bier became an Oscar-winning director when her 2010 film 'In a Better World' won the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony. It also netted her a Golden Globe Award in the same category. Bier then went on to win an Emmy in 2016 for Outstanding Directing for the TV show 'Night Manager', which starred Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman.
3. Lead singer (and partial namesake) of the band responsible for the 2015 hit '7 Years'

Answer: Lukas Forchhammer

Lukas Forchhammer is a singer-songwriter who fronts the Danish band Lukas Graham. The band released their first album in 2012, but didn't really gain international prominence until the release of the song 'Mama Said' in 2014. In 2015 '7 Years' reached number one on the charts of several European countries (including the UK, Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands), Australia and New Zealand. It also made it to number two on the US Billboard Hot 100.
4. Industrialist and founder of the Carlsberg brewery

Answer: J. C. Jacobsen

In the 21st century, Carlsberg is a major international brewery company, responsible for producing many well-known brands of beer and cider in addition to the original pale lager that shares its name. It was founded in 1847 in Copenhagen by Jacob Christian "J. C." Jacobsen who named his new venture after his young son, Carl.

In addition to being a successful brewer, Jacobsen was also a Member of Parliament and a patron of both the arts and sciences. He was a major contributor to the fund to restore Frederiksborg Castle after the devastating fire it suffered in 1859 and founded the Carlsberg Laboratory to conduct scientific research into the brewing process.
5. Comedian and TV presenter, known for hosting the British quiz show 'Fifteen-to-One'

Answer: Sandi Toksvig

Sandi Toksvig was born in Copenhagen in 1958 to a Danish father and a British mother. She began her career in comedy at Cambridge University's famous Footlights theatre club alongside other famous names such as Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson but moved into a career as a television presenter after leaving university and is also a prolific author. Aside from hosting TV quizzes, she has also presented popular shows such as 'The Great British Bake-Off' and 'QI', acted in 'Call the Midwife' and was a regular panelist on 'Call My Bluff'.
6. Professional dancer who won the sixth series of the TV competition 'Strictly Come Dancing'

Answer: Camilla Dallerup

Camilla Dallerup had a successful career as a professional ballroom dancer, but it was her appearance on the first six series of the British TV show 'Strictly Come Dancing' that made her a famous name. The show (whose international spin-offs are often called 'Dancing with the Stars') is a dance competition where celebrities who usually have little dance training or background are paired with a professional dancer to learn and perform a range of ballroom dances.

She appeared on it from 2003 to 2008, only leaving it after she finally won the competition with her celebrity partner Tom Chambers, a British actor best known for appearing on the hospital drama 'Holby City'.
7. Philosopher and proponent of existentialism who wrote 'Fear and Trembling' and 'The Concept of Anxiety'

Answer: Søren Kierkegaard

Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was the first philosopher to promote the ideas of existentialism, although that name for it was not coined until it gained more popularity in the mid-20th century. This branch of philosophy relates to self-identity and the freedom of each individual to influence the outcomes of their own life. Kierkegaard was also a staunch Christian and many of his works are both philosophical and theological.

The title of 'Fear and Trembling' (1843) is a Biblical quote from Philippians 2:12.
8. Prime Minister of Denmark, 1924 to 1926 and again from 1929 to 1942

Answer: Thorvald Stauning

Thorvald Stauning was one of Denmark's longest-serving Prime Ministers and a member of the Social Democratic Party. He enjoyed widespread popularity throughout most of his time in office and won re-election three times during the 1930s, despite the background of economic depression and the looming threat of the Second World War. Stauning continued as Prime Minister after Denmark's occupation by Nazi Germany in 1940; he died in office in 1942 and was granted the honour of a state funeral.
9. Former monarch of both Denmark and England

Answer: Sweyn Forkbeard

Sweyn Forkbeard inherited the Danish throne from his father, Harald Bluetooth, in 986 and spent a large part of his reign masterminding a series of raids and short-lived invasions of England. He finally succeeded in claiming the English crown on Christmas Day, 1013, when his forces marched across the country and forced his predecessor King Aethelred ("the Unready") to flee into exile.

However, his success was short-lived (literally), as he died just five weeks later.
10. Supermodel and co-founder of 'Nylon', an American fashion and lifestyle magazine

Answer: Helena Christensen

Helena Christensen was born in Copenhagen in 1968 and competed in the 1986 edition of the Miss Universe beauty pageant. She found fame as one of the top supermodels of the 1990s and during that time she appeared on the covers of some of the world's most famous fashion magazines, including 'Vogue' and 'Harper's Bazaar'.

Therefore, it shouldn't be that surprising that she later chose to work on the production of one instead - although 'Nylon's other founders were more established in the publishing industry.
