Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During Billy's first appearance in "Saw", he's seen riding which of these?

Answer: Tricycle

Although Billy actually first appears on a television screen, he makes a formal appearance after Amanda Young becomes one of the survivors of the Jigsaw Killer, removing the reverse bear trap off her head. In this sequence, he emerges from the darkness riding a tricycle, and while he doesn't literally move (he is just a dummy, after all), he is pulled along by a wire, and that makes it just creepy enough.

His image is one of the major throughlines of the series; he appears in the subsequent core films of the original eight.
2. In nearly every "Saw" film, Billy appears on a television screen to inform victims of their traps. "Saw II" is the only of these where this does not occur.

Answer: False

Actually, the very first trap of the movie is the one to feature Billy in this way. While the rest of the traps featured took place inside the rigged house and thus did not feature Billy, the movie starts with the counterpoint to the reverse bear trap-- the venus flytrap. Billy also appears later in the film when the police storm John Kramer's workshop; he rides in on a tricycle before most of the cops are killed in an electrified stairwell.
3. Who created Billy?

Answer: John Kramer

Billy's origin is shown in "Saw III" as John Kramer, the original Jigsaw Killer, puts finishing touches on the puppet during a flashback. As if to make the entire timeline more complex (and let me tell you, it goes off the rails a bit), Billy reappears in one of the flashback scenes of "Jigsaw" (the eighth film and pseudo-prequel) as well, implying he was completed by that point in time.

In reality, Billy was originally made of clay and papier-mache. By "Saw III", he was rebuilt due to wear-and-tear, this time out of foam.
4. Billy appears as one of the background dummies in what 2007 horror film also directed by James Wan?

Answer: Dead Silence

Although all of these movies feature dolls to an extent (and both "The Conjuring" and "Annabelle" are linked to Wan and the horror 'Conjureverse'), "Dead Silence" was much more doll-heavy, being about an evil ventriloquist named Mary Shaw who infused her dolls with her spirit in an effort to haunt the family of those who lynched her.

Interestingly, the name of the featured doll in this film was also 'Billy', though the actual Billy shows up in the background elsewhere in the movie.
5. Billy explodes as an element of another trap in "Saw IV", harming which of these detectives on the Jigsaw case?

Answer: Perez

Although Billy was seemingly destroyed in this film, he makes further appearances in the series (and no, not as part of flashbacks). In "Saw IV", Billy is used to convey a message to Detective Perez and a low voice is used to lure her closer to the doll proper.

When she leans in, his face explodes and she's sent to the hospital with life-threatening shrapnel injuries. She pushes Strahm to pursue Detective Hoffman as a perpetrator (rightly so), but it gets him killed in "Saw V", and when she returns in "Saw VI", Hoffman kills her outright. Billy apparently makes a full recovery.
6. Billy appears not only in other films from James Wan, but from what other "Saw" creator and collaborator?

Answer: Leigh Whannell

Leigh Whannell, who played the role of Adam in the first "Saw" film, co-wrote the scripts of "Saw", "Saw II", and "Saw III" before moving on to act in other horror films (like the "Insidious" series, also by Wan and also featuring Billy as an Easter egg) and then directing them. Whannell would go on to direct the 2020 horror film "The Invisible Man", but before that, he brought Billy back in the form of graffiti in his 2018 movie "Upgrade", which starred Logan Marshall-Green.
7. Billy is voiced by which "Saw" actor?

Answer: Tobin Bell

Jigsaw was a man of many practical talents, and amongst creating his traps and building Billy, he also did all the voice work. Billy himself never talked (that'd be too unbelievable), but he was frequently shown in videos and his alleged voice would be heard on cassette players in each film.

The truth was that Billy was nothing more than a mouthpiece for Jigsaw, regardless of who utilized the role (Kramer or Hoffman or otherwise). Bell appeared as Jigsaw (and Billy) in all seven original films and he reprised the role in "Jigsaw" in 2018. Bell also did voice work for Billy in the "Saw" video games.
8. How is Billy destroyed at the end of "Saw 3D"?

Answer: He's blown up

Yeah-- in a scene about destroying the evidence, Detective Hoffman blows up John Kramer's old workshop after successfully (finally!) using the reverse bear trap on Jill Tuck, John Kramer's wife. In doing this, Billy is seen as a victim of the explosion.

It's kind of for naught though. As soon as Hoffman is done with the workshop, he's captured by Lawrence Gordon and shoved into the bathroom from the first "Saw" and left to die. Not sure who the winner really is after all of this, but it's not Billy.
9. Which of these 2006 comedy films parodied the "Saw" series and featured a Billy-like species of alien?

Answer: Scary Movie 4

Although the Wayans Brothers bailed out of the series for "Scary Movie 3", the series continued on, leaving the slasher and haunting subgenres behind and moving into popular franchises instead. "Scary Movie 4" was the most removed to date, featuring elements of "War of the Worlds", "The Grudge", and "Brokeback Mountain".

The Billy puppet, in this movie, turned out to be a representative of a group of Billy puppet aliens who descended to Earth to 'play games' and who fathered the child of The Grudge.

Not the finest film in cinema history.
10. Billy appears in the PC video game "Dead By Daylight". Is he one of the playable killers?

Answer: No

Though Billy appears on a number of "Saw"-themed traps positioned throughout the stages depending, the '"Saw" Chapter' killer is actually The Pig, otherwise known as Amanda Young (as seen in the first few "Saw" films. The survivor for this DLC expansion is Detective Tapp, Danny Glover's character from the original movie. Billy sits on every razor trap on the map and is really only encountered if you need to remove a reverse bear trap from your head. If you fail to locate the key, he'll let out a chilling laugh, but that's about it. You have worse things to worry about.
