Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You decide to start your Maltese vacation at the very top of Malta. What is the highest peak in the country?

Answer: Ta'Dmejrek

The highest peak in Malta, Ta'Dmejrek, is only about 850 ft (253m) above sea level. It is located in the Dingli Cliff along the southwest-central coast of Malta. Despite not being very high up, Ta'Dmejrek gives a beautiful view of the surrounding towns and the Mediterranean Sea.
2. You travel next to Malta's capital city of Valletta and want to visit the famous Is-Suq tal-Belt. What kind of establishment is this?

Answer: Marketplace

Is-Suq tal-Belt was built in the mid 19th century on the site where an even older marketplace and gallows once stood. The marketplace was considered one of the busiest places in Valletta until it was almost totally destroyed during World War II. After it was rebuilt, it never attracted the people it used to. To avoid having the marketplace fall into total ruins, it was renovated again in 2017 and many of the old features were rebuilt. Today, it once again is a center for daily life in Valletta and has a bustling nightlife as well.
3. Continuing through Valletta, you visit the most famous church in all of Malta. Known locally as Kon-Katidral ta' San Ġwann, the church is dedicated to which saint?

Answer: John the Baptist

Saint John's Co-Cathedral is not only the most visit church in Malta but it is one of the most visited places in the country as well. Built in 1577 by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, the church is built almost entirely of Maltese limestone. What really makes the church special is its interior which was designed by Mattia Preti.

The interior is extremely ornate and laid out in the Baroque style. The most striking feature is the large bronze statue of Jesus' Baptism performed by the church's patron John the Baptist that stands behind the altar.

The Church is also the burial place of some of the most important leaders of the Knights Hospitaller.
4. For your last stop in Valletta, you decide to visit the site in the city that has a collection of plaques dedicated to some Europe's most important events. Which location is this?

Answer: Lower Barrakka Gardens

The Lower Barrakka Gardens are a series of garden complexes overlooking Valletta's Grand Harbor. One of features of the Lower Barrakka Gardens are various plaques commemorating events in European history, most of which did not occur in Malta. These events include the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 and the Italian Unification led by Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The Gardens are located near the Siege Bell War Memorial and the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
5. You decide to leave Valletta and head north to Ggantija, an ancient temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ggantija is located on which island, the largest in Malta besides Malta itself?

Answer: Gozo

Ggantija is one of many ancient and ruined temple complexes that can be found throughout Malta. Ggantija is a monolithic temple and is believed to be the oldest religious building in Europe that is still standing today. It was built over 5500 years ago. Little is known about what exact purpose the temple was used for. It is known that it was a common pilgrimage destination for women who were barren and hoped to conceive a child. Pictured is one of the fertility artifacts that is now on display.

Gozo is the northernmost island in Malta. It is largely rural and hilly geography wise. However, it is home to many natural sites that are popular with tourists and locals alike.
6. You decide to visit the Wied il-Mielah Valley on the island of Gozo and travel to the very end of the valley. What kind of natural geographic feature will you see here, as featured in the photo?

Answer: Window

At the end of the Wied il-Mielah Valley is the Wied il-Mielah Window. A window is more commonly called a natural arch. It is located near the village of Gharb on Gozo's west coast. It is located along the coast line where many caves and grottoes can be found and explored.

The Wied il-Mielah Window has grown in popularity since 2017 when the much more famous Azure Window (pictured) on Gozo's east coast collapsed in a storm. However, the Wied il-Mielah Window is not believed to be at risk of collapse because it is much thicker and not as exposed to the elements as the Azure Window was.
7. For your next adventure in Malta, you decide to go snorkeling around Fungus Rock. Where did this small island get its name from?

Answer: From a type of plant that grows on it

When Fungus Rock was first discovered by the Knights Hospitaller, the group mistook a parasitic plant that grows on the island for a fungus. The plant was used as a cure for many diseases and to stop bleeding. It was so popular and useful that it was given as a gift to important visitors to Malta.

Today, Fungus Rock is known for its photographic value and for being a popular snorkeling destination.
8. You have a hankering for some delicious food so you travel to the famous Palazzo Pescatore. This place was once a lavish palace but today it is known for its seafood cuisine and is located in which city?

Answer: St. Paul's Bay

The Palazzo Pescatore was built to be a palace in the 1800s. The palace was then known for its porticoes that run the entirety of the building. Over time, it was turned into a nightclub before it became a restaurant complex known for its seafood. The Palazzo Pescatore is located in St. Paul's Bay, an area where Saint Paul is believed to have been shipwrecked. Because much of the palace was renovated when its uses changed, the interior looks nothing like it once did.

The most iconic part remaining of the original palace is the main arch.
9. Having had a good time at one palace, you decide to visit another: The Dragonara Palace in St. Julian's. However, this palace is no longer a palace either. What is the Dragonara Palace today?

Answer: A casino

Dragonara Palace was so named because it was once believed a dragon lived in the cave complexes and in the water nearby. It was built in 1870 and was the summer home of the Scicluna family, a family of prominent bankers. During World War I, it became a hospital and refugee center. Today it is a popular casino and museum.

Many of the original features of the palace have been restored including the gardens, frescoes and Egyptian caryatids.
10. You decide to finish your Maltese vacation on the small island of Cominotto. Which of the following are you most likely going to see there?

Answer: A lagoon

Cominotto (or Comino) is a small but beautifully majestic island in Malta. It is not permanently inhabited but attracts many visitors because of its clear blue waters known locally as the Blue Lagoon. The island is well known for its boat tours and other seafaring activities. Cominotto is located between the islands of Malta and Gozo.
