Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which football (soccer) player, born in Belfast, was well known for his playboy lifestyle and the quotation 'I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered'?

Answer: George Best

Best was one of the best footballers to play at the highest levels of English football. In his career with Manchester United he was part of the team which won the European Cup in 1968, and he won the award of European Footballer of the Year in the same year. Best's celebrity lifestyle took its toll in alcohol dependency and he received a liver transplant in 2002. Even this failed to stop his drinking, which led indirectly to his death in 2005. Among his other sayings are 'In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life' and 'I've stopped drinking, but only while I'm asleep'.
2. All these actors had their moments of wildness. Which of them was the Englishman?

Answer: Oliver Reed

Reed was born in London in 1938 and was the nephew of film director Sir Carol Reed. Oliver Reed appeared in 'Women in Love' (1969), often remembered for the nude wrestling scene with Alan Bates, and 'The Big Sleep' (1978) among many others. He died during the filming of 'Gladiator' in 2000, in which he played the role of a gladiator trainer. All the actors named have had problems with alcohol abuse, although Farrell has been reported to have given up drinking. Farrell, Harris and Meyers were all born in Ireland.
3. Keith Moon was well known for his wild exploits, which included driving a car into a swimming pool and exploding toilets. For which British band did he play drums?

Answer: The Who

Moon led a reckless life, with drugs and alcohol taking a heavy toll and it is possible that he suffered from some form of personality disorder. He died in 1978, aged only thirty-two, having taken an overdose of drugs prescribed to help with the symptoms of withdrawing from alcohol.

Despite his personal problems, Moon is remembered as one of the best drummers of his era and has been inducted into the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' in Cleveland.
4. Dylan Thomas was a writer who established a reputation for being wild and untamed. In which country of the UK was he born?

Answer: Wales

Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales, in 1914 and is remembered for his voice play 'Under Milk Wood'. The play is set in the fictional Welsh village of Llareggub, which sounds harmless until read backwards. Thomas's best known poem was written for his dying father.

It begins 'do not go gentle into that good night' and urges him to 'rage, rage against the dying of the light'. Although renowned for his love of alcohol it seems that his death at the age of only 39 was mainly attributable to pneumonia, although his resistance to the illness may have been impaired by his excessive drinking.
5. Which supermodel has become almost as well known for her bad behaviour, including throwing a telephone at her housekeeper and slapping her personal assistant, as for her catwalk duties?

Answer: Naomi Campbell

Unfortunately, Naomi has struggled with her 'anger management issues' and has been charged with assault on more than one occasion. In 2000 she pleaded guilty to hitting her assistant with a mobile (cell) 'phone and in the years up to 2006 eight other employees claimed to have suffered physical abuse at her hands.

In 2008 Campbell lost her temper with officials at Heathrow airport, as her luggage had gone astray, and was banned from travelling with British Airways as a result. Despite her personal problems, Naomi has remained in demand as a model and has spoken out against racial discrimination in the fashion industry.
6. Russell Crowe is another star to have had problems with throwing telephones. In which activity did he make his name?

Answer: Acting

Crowe was born in New Zealand and is a cousin to Martin and Jeff Crowe, who both played international cricket for their country. His family moved to Australia when Russell was only four and he is usually thought of as being Australian. His film career began when he was a child, helped by his parents working on film sets as caterers. Among his big film successes are 'L.A. Confidential' (1997) and 'Gladiator' (2000).

The telephone incident came in 2005 when Crowe lost his temper when he could not obtain a connection to Australia from his New York hotel and threw the telephone at an employee of the hotel.
7. Which poet was famously described by Lady Caroline Lamb as 'mad, bad and dangerous to know'?

Answer: Byron

Byron had a love life which could be described as 'tempestuous'. His affair with the married Lady Caroline Lamb began in 1812 and caused a huge scandal. She remained besotted with him even after he had moved on to new conquests. In 1815 Byron married Anne Milbanke, a cousin of Caroline Lamb's, possibly for her money.

The marriage was not happy and the couple were legally separated after only a year and the birth of one daughter. Byron moved abroad, continuing his profligate ways, and died in Greece at the early age of thirty-six.
8. Known as the 'Prince of Darkness' and for having bitten off the head of a bat, Ozzy Osborne was the lead singer of which British heavy metal band?

Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath were formed in 1968 and had their biggest success with the 1970 album 'Paranoid'. Osborne, whose real first name is John, was removed from the band in 1979 with his unreliability, due to drug and alcohol abuse, being cited as the reason.

He was replaced by Ronnie James Dio, who had formerly sung with the band 'Rainbow'. Osborne became known to a wider audience due to the reality television show 'The Osbornes' which followed the life of him and his family between 2002 and 2005. Of the other options given, AC/DC came from Australia, Rush from Canada and Scorpions from Germany.
9. The painter Paul Gauguin died in the Marquesas Islands, having led a debauched lifestyle, but in which European country was he born?

Answer: France

Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848 and began painting in his spare time while working as a stockbroker. He became a full time artist in 1885, which led to the breakdown of his marriage, during which he had fathered five children. Gauguin and Van Gogh worked together for nine weeks in Arles, and it was during this period that Van Gogh cut off his ear lobe. Gauguin went to Tahiti in 1891, before returning to Paris.

He left again in 1895 and spent the rest of his life in French Polynesia. During his time there he fathered several more children with various mistresses, some of whom were under what would be considered to be the age of consent. Gauguin was sentenced to prison, having supported the islanders against the French colonial governor but died from syphilis in 1903 at the age of fifty four before the sentence could be enforced.
10. Which American golfer, who had well documented problems on and off the course, was known by the nickname of 'Wild Thing'?

Answer: John Daly

Daly has had problems with drink, gambling and his weight, as well as with his several wives. Despite these, he has had a successful golf career winning the PGA Championship in 1991 and the British Open in 1995, although he has been known to walk off when things are going badly.

His other nicknames are 'Long John', for the distance of his drives from the tee, and 'The Lion'. Of the other options, Els (known as 'The Big Easy') and Player ('The Black Knight') were both born in South Africa and Nicklaus was known as 'The Golden Bear'.
