Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Genesis 8:10-12 tells of Noah sending a bird out from the ark and when the bird returned, waiting another seven days before sending the bird out a second time. However, when Noah sent out the bird the second time, it returned with an olive leaf. Then, when he waited another seven days before sending out the bird a third time, it did not return. What was the bird Noah sent out on three different occasions?

Answer: Dove

Noah sent out a dove from the ark on three different occasions, according to Genesis 8:1-15. The first time he sent out the dove, it returned to the ark so Noah waited another seven days before sending it out the second time. Verse 11 states when the dove returned the second tine, it had a "freshly plucked olive leaf" in its mouth. Noah waited another seven days before sending the dove out the third time, and on this occasion it did not return.

In other words, Noah had all the proof he needed the flood waters had receded to the point there was dry land in some places.
2. After marrying Leah, Jacob was told by his father-in-law he could marry Rachel providing he put in another seven years of labor. Who was Jacob's father-in-law, who told him he would have to work another seven years, as per Genesis 29?

Answer: Laban

Laban, the father of Leah and Rachel, is the correct answer. According to Genesis 29, Jacob agreed to work for Laban for seven years for the right to marry Rachel. However, when the seven years were up, Jacob was mortified to find Leah was given to him in marriage, and not Rachel. Laban didn't think the matter was a big deal and explained to Jacob the local custom was to have the oldest daughter marry before the youngest. To marry his youngest daughter, Laban told Jacob he would need to work an additional seven years. Or as explained in Genesis 29:27 in the NKJV: "Fulfill her [Leah's] week, and we will give you this one [Rachel] also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years."
3. According to Genesis 43:33 in the NKJV, a Bible character had a group of people sit before him, from the youngest to the oldest, and they looked in "astonishment at one another". Who were the people who looked at one another in astonishment?

Answer: Joseph's brothers

Genesis 43:33 is part of a lengthy passage telling of Joseph's brothers travelling to Egypt for a second time to meet with him. On the second trip, however, they brought along Benjamin, Joseph's younger full brother. However, the brothers did not know at the time it was Joseph, their long lost brother they were meeting with.

Verse 33 tells of Joseph's brothers being seated in a prescribed order, prompting them to look at "one another in astonishment". A short while later, Joseph would reveal his true identity to his brothers.
4. What future judge of Israel was despised by others in his family because he was "the son of another woman," as per Judges 11:1-2?

Answer: Jephthah

Jephthah is the correct answer. According to Judges 11:1-28, Jephthah was the son of Gilead and a harlot and his half brothers had no use for him. In fact, Verse 2 in the NKJV states, "Gilead's wife bore sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, 'You shall have no inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman.'"

Scripture goes on to tell of Jephthah fleeing from his brothers and living in the land of Tob. Later, Jephthah would ascend to become the judge of Israel.
5. Here's a verse from the NKJV containing the word 'another': "Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips." In what Old Testament book do you find this verse?

Answer: Proverbs

The verse is from Proverbs 27:2. Chapter 27 of Proverbs is largely about a father offering advice to his young son. Verse 11, in the NKJV, for example, states, "My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him who reproaches me."

The vast majority of the content in Proverbs was written by Solomon, a king of Israel who was known far and wide for his wisdom.
6. Here's another verse from the NKJV containing the word 'another': "One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts." In what Old Testament book do you find this verse?

Answer: Psalms

The verse is from Psalm 145:4, one of a number of Psalms written by David, a famous king of Israel. Psalm 145 is largely about God's majesty and love.
To put the verse in context, here's how Psalm 145:4-6 reads in the NKJV: "One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts. I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness."
7. According to 2 Kings 1, a prophet called upon God to destroy a captain and his fifty soldiers with fire when they came to arrest him. When another captain and fifty soldiers were dispatched to arrest the prophet, they too were consumed by fire. Who was the prophet who called successfully upon God to destroy the captain and his fifty soldiers as well as another captain and his fifty soldiers?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah is the correct answer. 2 Kings 1:1-18 provides an account of Elijah calling upon God to consume with fire a captain and fifty of his men who had been sent by the king to arrest him. Another captain and his fifty men were dispatched to arrest Elijah and they too were consumed by fire.

Scripture goes on to tell of a third captain and his fifty men being dispatched but they were spared by Elijah when the captain begged for mercy. The arrest of Elijah had been commanded by King Ahaziah.

The chapter concludes with Ahaziah dying, just like Elijah prophesied.
8. According to Ruth 2:8 in the NKJV, Ruth was instructed "do not go to glean in another field, nor go from here, but stay close by my young women." Who told Ruth not to glean in another field?

Answer: Boaz

Ruth was told by Boaz not to glean in another barley field. In Ruth 2:1 in the NKJV, Boaz is described as "a man of great wealth". This is in stark contrast to Ruth, who was a widow and a Moabite. Scripture goes on to tell of Boaz and Ruth marrying and becoming the parents of Obed, who in turn was the grandfather of David.
9. After Esther and Mordecai were successful in preventing Haman from carrying out a diabolical plan to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire, Esther 9:19 in the NKJV states the Hebrews celebrated with "gladness and fasting" and by sending presents to one another. This was the start of what Jewish holiday?

Answer: Purim

The Jewish holiday Purim commemorates the efforts of Esther and Mordecai in preventing Haman from carrying out a dastardly scheme to kill all the Jews in the massive Persian empire. (According to Esther 1:1 in the NKJV, the empire consisted of one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, stretching from India in the east to Ethiopia in the west.)

Details about the celebration of the Feast of Purim can be found in Esther 9:18-32.
10. The following quote containing the word 'another' is from a book in the Minor Prophet section, using the NKJV: "Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously with one another by profaning the covenant of the fathers?" In what book do you find this verse?

Answer: Malachi

The verse is from Malachi 2:10 and is part of a passage commenting on the treachery of infidelity. The passage begins in Verse 10 and runs through to Verse 17.

To put the verse in context, here's how Verses 10 and 11 read in the NKJV: "Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously with one another by profaning the covenant of the fathers? Judah has dealt treacherously and an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem, for Judah has profaned the LORD'S holy institution which He loves:
he has married the daughter of a foreign god." (Or as the NIV states, "Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god".)

Out of the four different possible answers, Malachi is the only one who was a minor prophet. Jeremiah and Ezekiel are considered major prophets and Job was a long-suffering man who remained faithful to God.
