Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Old Testament Scripture tells of God instructing a man to "rise early in the morning" and to ask the Pharaoh for permission for the Hebrews to leave Egypt. Who did God tell to rise early in the morning?

Answer: Moses

Moses, of course, is the correct answer. Exodus 8:20 in the NKJV quotes God as saying to Moses: "Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him, 'Thus says the LORD: '"Let My people go, that they may serve Me"'."

Moses would eventually get permission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but only after ten highly punishing plagues were unleashed against the Pharaoh and the Egyptians by God.
2. The following verse, containing the word 'rise', is from the Old Testament, using the NKJV: "You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the LORD." In what book do you find this statement?

Answer: Leviticus

The statement by God is contained in Leviticus 19:32. The verse is part of a lengthy passage pertaining to moral and ceremonial laws. To put Leviticus 19:32 into context, here's how it reads in the NKJV with Verses 31 and 33: "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the LORD. And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him."

Tradition holds Leviticus was written by Moses but some modern day theologians dispute this belief.
3. According to Judges 8:21, Zebah and Zalmunna, two adversaries of the Hebrews, told a noted judge of Israel to "rise" and "kill us." And that's exactly what the judge did. Can you name the judge?

Answer: Gideon

The story of Gideon killing Zebah and Zalmunna is found in Judges 8:1-21. It's a bit of a long story as well as a fairly complex one. However, to make a long story short, Zebah and Zalmunna were two Midianite kings who were responsible for killing a large, but unstated, number of the Israelites. The passage goes on to tell of Gideon catching up with the two kings and giving instructions to his first-born son Jether to "rise, kill them."

However, Jether became overwhelmed with fear and did not carry out his father Gideon's command. It was at this point Zebah and Zalmunna told Gideon to, "rise yourself, and kill us; for as a man is, so is his strength."

Verse 21 in the NKJV concludes by stating, "So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on their camels' necks." No further details are given.
4. Using the NKJV, Old Testament Scripture states, "Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you." A few lines later, it states, "the Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising." In what book, written by a major prophet, do you find this statement?

Answer: Isaiah

The statement was made by Isaiah and can be found in Isaiah 60:1-3. The verses are part of a passage that contains the sub-heading 'The Gentiles Bless Zion' in the NKJV Bible.

Here's how Isaiah 60:1-3 reads in the NKJV: "Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising."

Many Christians believe the verses are in reference to Jesus Christ being the light for the Gentiles.
5. The following verse contains the word 'rise' and is from the Old Testament, using the NKJV: "For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity." In what book do you find this verse?

Answer: Proverbs

The verse in question is from Proverbs 24:16. To put the verse in context, here's how Proverbs 24:15-16 reads in the NKJV: "Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; do not plunder his resting place;
For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity."

Proverbs was written by Solomon, king of Israel during its golden era. In both the Christian Bible and the Hebrew Bible, Proverbs appears immediately after Psalms.
6. "Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death," is a quote found in Matthew 10:21. Who made the comment?

Answer: Jesus

The statement about children rising up against parents was made by Jesus. The statement is part of a passage in which Jesus warns His disciples about persecutions coming.

To put the statement in context, here's how Matthew 10:21-22 reads in the NKJV: "Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved."
7. According to Mark 6:14, a leader, upon hearing reports about Jesus, thought John the Baptist had risen from the dead. What was the leader's name?

Answer: Herod

Mark 6:14 states Herod at one time thought John the Baptist had risen from the dead when he heard reports about Christ's ministry. Herod, of course, is the one who had ordered the execution of John the Baptist. This even though Mark 6:20 in the NKJV states, "Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him." However, Herod ended up being out manoeuvred by his evil wife Herodias and gave in to her wishes to have John executed.
8. A blind man was told by a crowd at Jericho to "be of good cheer" and "rise" as Jesus was calling him. What was the blind man's name? (Mark 10:46-52)

Answer: Bartimaeus

Bartimaeus, a helpless blind beggar, was told by a crowd of people in Jericho to "be of good cheer" and to "rise" as Jesus was calling him. They made the statement to Bartimaeus after many of them had told him to be quiet as he shouted, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

When Jesus expressed a desire to meet with Bartimaeus, it's as if people were no longer opposed to the blind beggar. Moments after meeting with Jesus, Bartimaeus would miraculously gain his sight.

See Mark 10:46-52 for details.
9. John 20:1-10 in the NKJV tells of two disciples going to Christ's tomb and upon finding it empty they left baffled, for "as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead." Who were the two disciples who went to Christ's empty tomb?

Answer: Peter and John

John 20:1-10 tells of Peter and the "the disciple Jesus loved" being involved in a footrace to Christ's tomb after they had heard a report the tomb was empty. Tradition holds "the disciple Jesus loved" was none other than John the writer of the Gospel of John.

According to the passage, John won the footrace and the only thing they saw in Christ's tomb was His linen cloths and the handkerchief that had been around His head.
10. Revelation 19:3 in the NKJV tells of people making the following statement about a city: "Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!" What is the name of city whose smoke "rises up forever"?

Answer: Babylon

Babylon is the correct answer. Much of Revelation 18 provides details about the total destruction of Babylon and its people with the beginning of Chapter 19 telling of a celebration of the wicked city's defeat. Revelation 19:3 in the NKJV tells of "a great multitude in heaven" proclaiming, "Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!"

Revelation, the final book in the New Testament, was written by John while in exile on the island of Patmos.
