Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis 22:1-18, Isaac almost became a burnt offering. Who was about to kill him and put him on a fire when God stopped him at the last minute?

Answer: Abraham

The story of Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac is one of the best known stories in the Old Testament. Scripture reports God commanded Abraham to take his son Isaac to a mountain in the region of Moriah and to sacrifice him as a burnt offering.

Just as Abraham was preparing to sacrifice Isaac, Scripture reports an angel of the LORD called out and told him to spare his son because it was evident Abraham feared God. After the angel called out, Abraham spotted a ram in the thicket and used it as his sacrificial offering on the fire he built.

The story is told in the 22nd chapter of Genesis. Many Christians compare this episode to God's sacrifice of His own son, Jesus in the New Testament.
2. What was the name of the king who deliberately set his house on fire and died in the flames? (1 Kings 16:17-19)

Answer: Zimri

According to 1 Kings 16:15, Zimri reigned for seven turbulent days. In his quest for power, he killed Elah, the reigning king, as well as his entire family and his friends. (1 Kings 16:10-11)

1 Kings 16:16-18 tells of a despondent Zimri setting the king's house on fire and dying in the flames after learning rival forces had him encircled.
3. Scripture tells of the Israelites conquering Jericho and burning the city to the ground. Who was the leader of the Israelites at the time?

Answer: Joshua

Joshua led the Israelites when they conquered Jericho and burned it to the ground. The walls of Jericho miraculously came tumbling down, enabling the Israelites to easily conquer the city, according to the sixth chapter of Joshua.

Joshua 6:2-5 tells of the LORD giving instructions to Joshua on how to bring down the walls of Jericho. As part of the instructions, the Israelites were to march around the city once for six consecutive days with seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns.

Instructions for the seventh day were distinctly different. Scripture goes on to tell of the LORD instructing the Israelites to march around the city seven times and for the seven priests to blow their seven trumpets. After the priests blew the trumpets, all the people were "to shout with a great shout" and the walls would come tumbling down, the LORD is quoted as saying.

Sure enough, that's exactly what happened, according to Scripture. As documented in Joshua 6:17-25, only Rahab the prostitute and her parents, as well as her brothers and sisters, were spared when the Israelites took possession of Jericho.

The passage also tells of the Israelites burning the city to the ground with "the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron" being put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
4. According to Judges 15, who attached torches to the tails of foxes and set them loose in the grain fields of the Philistines, burning up their crops?

Answer: Samson

Judges 15:4-5 tell of Samson, a judge of Israel, catching three hundred foxes and attaching torches to the tails of foxes before setting them loose in the grain fields of the Philistines. Scripture states that not only were grainfields consumed by fire, but also vineyards and olive groves.

Verse 6 goes on to tell of the Philistines getting revenge by burning to death Samson's former wife and her father. The chapter goes on to tell of an infuriated Samson taking the jawbone of a donkey and killing one thousand Philistines.
5. According to 2 Samuel 14:30, who set Joab's barley field on fire?

Answer: Absalom's servants

Absalom's servants set Joab's barley field on fire, as per 2 Samuel 14:30. Absalom was the son of David and Joab was the commander of David's army. However, Absalom and Joab had their differences, some of which surfaced after Absalom killed his own half brother Ammon. (According to 2 Samuel 13, Absalom killed Ammon after he raped Tamar, Absalom's full sister.)

Scripture goes on to tell of Absalom staging a coup attempt against David, with a bloody civil war erupting. The war would come to an end only when Joab killed Absalom by plunging three spears through his heart when his long hair became entangled in the branches of a tree. Scripture states Absalom was riding on a donkey at the time and, when his hair became entangled, the donkey kept going forward.
6. According to 2 Kings 25:8-9, who set fire to the house of the LORD, the king's palace and all the houses of Jerusalem?

Answer: Nebuzaradan

Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard for Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon), is the correct answer. 2 Kings 25 tells of the horrific details involving the fall and captivity of Judah and Jerusalem. The fall of Jerusalem took place after an extended famine as enemy forces had the city encircled.

According to 2 Kings 25:7, the sons of Zedekiah, king of Judah were killed "before his eyes". Then enemy soldiers "put out the eyes of Zedekiah, bound him with bronze fetters, and took him to Babylon."

Verses 8 and 9 go on to tell of the house of the LORD, the king's palace and "all the houses of Jerusalem" being set on fire.
7. Proverbs 25:21-22 in the NKJV states: "If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the Lord will reward you." Solomon is credited with writing much of Proverbs, including the two verses above. What two other men are also credited with writing the book?

Answer: Agur and Lemuel

Agur and Lemuel are also credited with writing some of the content in the Book of Proverbs. Agur is credited with writing Chapter 30 and Lemuel is credited with writing 31:1-9.

Tradition holds Solomon wrote the rest of the book of Proverbs. However, some modern day theologians believe he did not write the first nine chapters.

Proverbs is a book full of witty sayings that is popular with Jews and Christians alike.
8. According to John 18:18, which one of the Twelve Disciples stood by a fire warming himself after the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Answer: Peter

John 18:18 tells of it being cold and a fire being lit in the courtyard of the high priest, with Peter standing with others warming themselves. According to Verse 17, Peter had just denied to a servant girl he was a disciple of Jesus.

Scripture goes on to tell of Peter denying Christ two more times with a rooster crowing, just as Jesus had predicted. Scripture states Peter wept bitterly after he denied knowing Christ the third time and the rooster crowed.

In addition to the 18th chapter of John, Peter's denials are reported in 26th chapter of the Matthew and the 14th chapter of Mark.

Matthew 26:75, in the NKJV, states: "And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, 'Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.' So he went out and wept bitterly."

In Mark 14:31, Peter had boldly proclaimed he would NEVER deny Christ. Scripture quotes Peter as saying: "But he spoke more vehemently. 'If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!'"
9. According to John 21:9, who had a fire on the shore of Galilee and cooked fish for breakfast?

Answer: Jesus and His disciples

John 21:1-14 tells of Jesus and seven of His disciples having a fire on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and dining on fish for breakfast. Verse 9 states that when the disciples came to land, they saw a fire of coals and proceeded to cook some fish.

According to Verse 11, the seven disciples caught one hundred and fifty-three fish when Jesus told them to cast their net on the right side of the boat -- this even though they had been fishing unsuccessfully all night. (The seven disciples were "Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples," as per Verse 2.)

The miraculous catch of fish followed by breakfast on the shore is just one of a number of post resurrection appearances reported in the four Gospels of the New Testament.
10. What worker in the early church was standing by a newly-built fire when suddenly a viper came out and bit him on the hand? (Acts 28:1-6)

Answer: Paul

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is the correct answer. The viper bite happened after Paul and his party made their way to shore in Malta after surviving a shipwreck. Miraculously, nothing happened after Paul was bitten by the snake.

According to Acts 28:2-3, the islanders built a fire and welcomed Paul's group. Verse 3 states Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. However, Scripture states the snake bite had no impact on Paul, much to the amazement of the islanders.

When Paul was first bitten, the natives were of the impression he was a murderer and although he escaped the sea, "justice does not allow to live." But after Paul did not swell up or suddenly fall dead, the natives changed their minds and thought he was a god.

Scripture goes on to tell of Paul's party staying on the island for some time, with Paul performing a number of miraculous healings. As a result of Paul's healings, many came to believe in a resurrected Jesus Christ.
