Good Kings of Judah Trivia Quiz

When Israel split into the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the kingdom of Judah had both good kings and bad kings. This quiz will focus on the good kings who "did what was right in the eyes of the LORD." I used the NIV.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Idol-hating King Asa removed all idols from Judah. He even burned a idol that his grandmother made. What kind of idol was it?

Answer: Asherah pole

1 Kings 15:13 tells us, "He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive Asherah pole. Asa cut the pole down and burned it in the Kirdon Valley." Asa was the first king of Judah that the Bible commends as doing "what was right in the eyes of the LORD." He reigned 41 years and defeated the Cushites.
2. Asa's son Jehoshaphat was a great king, yet he worked with an infamous king of Israel to capture Ramoth Gilead. Who was this king?

Answer: Ahab

See 1 Kings 22. Jehoshaphat worked with the wicked king Ahab to retake Ramoth Gilead from Aram. Ahab was killed at Ramoth Gilead, but Jehoshaphat survived and Judah prospered for 25 more years. Jehoshaphat's story can also be found in 2 Chronicles 18.
3. Joash was the next good king. Many people know how he was saved by the priest's wife, but how did he eventually die?

Answer: He was assassinated

As told in 2 Kings 13:20, "His officials conspired against him and assassinated him at Beth Milo, on the road down to Silla." When Joash was an infant, Jehoiada the priest and Jehosheba had saved him from being slaughtered by Queen Athaliah. Joash was a good king as long as Jehoiada lived. Joash's story can be found in 2 Kings 11-12.
4. After Amaziah king of Judah defeated Edom, which nation did he challenge to fight?

Answer: Israel

See 2 Kings 14:8-14. Amaziah had defeated 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. Feeling proud of his victory, he challenged Jehoash of Israel to a battle. Amaziah lost the battle and many treasures in the temple were stolen.
5. How many years did Azariah (Uzziah) reign as king?

Answer: 52

As told in 2 Kings 15:2a, "He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years." Azariah lived longer than any other king of Judah besides Manasseh, who reigned 55 years. Azariah is called Uzziah in 2 Chronicles.
6. Jotham only gets a few verses about himself. Exactly how many verses does Jotham have (in the book of 2 Kings)?

Answer: 7

They are 2 Kings 15:32-38. Jotham reigned 16 years and repaired the Upper Gate. Other than that, we don't know much more about this king.
7. During the reign of Hezekiah, this king of Assyria laid siege to Jerusalem. Who was this enemy king?

Answer: Sennacherib

See 2 Kings 18-19. When Jerusalem was under siege by Sennacherib, Hezekiah and the whole city prayed and fasted. Eventually, Yahweh sent an angel to kill the Assyrians and Judah was saved.
8. After Hezekiah recovered from his illness, how many more years did he live?

Answer: 15

The promise in 2 Kings 20:6 was, "I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria." Hezekiah had become ill and was told he would not survive, but because of his devotion to Yahweh, God blessed this king with 15 more years of life.
9. What important holiday did Josiah specifically celebrate in 2 Kings 23?

Answer: Passover

As told in 2 Kings 23:22, "Not since the days of the judges who led Israel, nor throughout the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, had any such Passover been observed." Josiah and all Judah celebrated the day the angel of death passed over the houses of the Israelites in Exodus.
10. Asa, Hezekiah, and Josiah all did what was right in the eyes of the LORD just as their "father", who?

Answer: David

See 1 Kings 15:11, 2 Kings 18:3, and 2 Kings 22:2. David was a man after God's own heart. Therefore, these great kings were compared to their ancestor David, whom these verses describe as their father.
