Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the Gospels is not synoptic? (Synoptic means "forming a general summary or synopsis".)

Answer: John

Matthew, Mark, and Luke have most of the same stories and similar order, and saw things similarly. John saw things differently and thus wrote them differently.
2. Which Gospel is usually thought to have been written first?

Answer: Mark

Mark was probably written shortly after 70 AD, but there is some disagreement on the exact dates.
3. What language were the Gospels mainly written in?

Answer: Greek

The Old Testament was written in Hebrew. Although parts of the Gospels have Aramaic in them, like some of Jesus' quotes, they were mainly written in Greek.
4. Which one of the Gospel authors shares a name with the author of Revelation?

Answer: John

John of Patmos wrote the book of Revelation on the island of Patmos, where he is thought to have been exiled. Some Bible scholars believe that it might have been the same John who wrote the Gospel of John, but others disagree. They definitely share a name, whether or not they are the same person.
5. When Jesus cast out a demon in the region of the Gerasenes, who/what did the demon identify himself as?

Answer: Legion

Here's the story in Mark 5:9-10.

"Then Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?'
'My name is Legion,' he replied, 'for we are many.'
And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area."
6. What was Matthew by profession, before he wrote his Gospel?

Answer: Tax collector

Matthew was a tax collector by profession. Many people of that time disliked tax collectors because they took more than they were supposed to, and kept the rest for themselves.
7. According to John 6:1-14, when Jesus fed the 5,000, how many baskets of bread and fish were left over?

Answer: 12

Here are verses 12 and 13 of that passage.
"When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, 'Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.' So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten."
8. What rock was Jesus crucified on?

Answer: Golgotha

Jesus was crucified on the rock of Golgotha near Jerusalem. Matthew 27:33 says the name means "place of the skull."
9. Which two Gospels have records of Jesus' genealogy?

Answer: Matthew and Luke

Luke 3:23-38 and Matthew 1:1-17 contain the genealogy of Jesus. Since they differ somewhat, scholars believe that one has it through Mary, and the other through Joseph.
10. Where was Jesus born?

Answer: Bethlehem

While Jesus' parents lived in Nazareth, Joseph was from Bethlehem. Caesar Augustus called for there to be a census in the Roman Empire, and that everybody had to go to their home-town to register. Therefore, Joseph, along with Mary, were in Bethlehem, thus fulfilling the prophesy that the savior would be born in Bethlehem. Chapter 2 of Luke gives a full account.
