Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Joshua's name mean?

Answer: Jehovah is salvation

Jesus's Hebrew name would have been Joshua, which is also written as Yehoshua, Yeshua, and Hoshea.
2. To what tribe did Joshua belong?

Answer: Ephraim

Ephraim was one of the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel (Jacob). The priests came from the tribe of Levi, and the Messiah descended from the tribe of Judah.
3. When is Joshua first mentioned in the Bible?

Answer: Just after the Exodus

He is first mentioned in Exodus 17:9, when Moses tells him to lead the forces against the Amalekites. This is just a matter of months after the Exodus, and prior to the conquest of Canaan.
4. When Moses was on Mount Sinai for forty days and forty nights, listening to the word of God, Joshua accompanied him.

Answer: True

We tend to think of Moses as being alone during this time, but Exodus 24:13 says that "Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God." When the pair later returned to camp, Joshua mistook the sounds of the crowd worshipping the golden calf as the sounds of war (Exodus 32:17). Joshua also later accompanied Moses into the tabernacle (Exodus 33:11).
5. When Eldad and Medad prophesied in the camp, Joshua told Moses to prohibit them from doing so. Did Moses take Joshua's advice?

Answer: No

Moses said, instead, "would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!" (Numbers 11:29)
6. When sent to spy out the promised land, Joshua was one of only two spies who gave a positive report. How many gave a negative report?

Answer: Ten

There were twelve spies total, but only Caleb and Joshua said they thought the land could be taken.
7. Before which priest was Joshua set when he was ordained a leader of the people?

Answer: Eleazar

In Numbers 27:17-23, Joshua was publicly ordained. Moses asked God to set a shepherd over the congregation, to lead them in his absence, and the Lord chose Joshua. Moses laid his hands upon Joshua "and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation."
8. In the first chapter of Joshua, God repeatedly tells Joshua to be what?

Answer: Strong and of good courage

God tells him this in Joshua 1:6, 1:7, and 1:9. Moses also tells him the same in Deuteronomy.
9. Joshua sends two men to spy out Jericho. With whom do they lodge?

Answer: A prostitute

They lodged in the house of Rahab the harlot, who hid them and lied to save them when the men of Jericho came looking for them. For this, she was rewarded with her life when the Israelites sieged the city.
10. Which miracle occurs first in the book of Joshua?

Answer: The waters of the Jordan are parted

This first miracle occurs in Joshua 4. When the priest bearing the ark of the covenant set foot into the waters, the Jordan parted. When they came back onto dry land, the waters fell back into place, and flowed over the banks of the Jordan as before. To commemorate the event, Joshua had each of the twelve tribes lay out a stone as a memorial.
11. What did Joshua do to the men shortly before they went to war with Jericho?

Answer: Circumcised them

Apparently, those who were born in the wilderness had not undergone the covenant of circumcision. This occurs in Joshua 5, at the command of God.
12. How many times, total, did the Israelites compass the city of Jericho before the walls fell?

Answer: Thirteen

They went around it one time per day for 6 days, and then 7 times on the 7th day.
13. After the conquest of Jericho, who took the "accursed thing," bringing God's wrath upon the Israelites?

Answer: Achan

See Joshua Chapter 7. The Jews were not supposed to take of the spoils of war, but Achan did, and hid them in his tent. As a consequence, Achan and his children were stoned and burned along with the stolen possessions.
14. According to the Book of Joshua, where else is the miracle of the sun and moon standing still recorded?

Answer: The Book of Jasher

This books has been lost to us today. Some scholars associate it with a book mentioned in Numbers and II Samuel, called "the book of the wars of the Lord."
15. Joshua wrote the entire book of Joshua.

Answer: False

Joshua could not have written the book in its entirety, because it speaks of the conquests of Hebron, Debir, and Leshem, events that occurred after Joshua's death. The book even speaks of Joshua's own death. Conservative scholars, however, do attribute the bulk of the work to Joshua.

Some Jewish traditions maintain that while Joshua wrote most of the book, the post-Joshua material was added later by Eleazar and Phinehas. Liberal scholars, on the other hand, dispute Joshua's authorship altogether, and they posit several hypothetical sources for the book that span several centuries.
