Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After his wife Sarah passed away, Abraham remarried and had an additional six sons with his second wife. What was her name?

Answer: Keturah

Genesis 25:1,2 - "Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah."

But it was Abraham's son Isaac (from Sarah) that was the promised child and firstborn (legitimate) son. As such, Isaac got everything when Abraham finally passed away at the age of 175.

Genesis 25:5,6 - "Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east."
2. In Leviticus 11, direction is provided to Moses and Aaron as to clean and unclean foods for the Israelites. Verses 13 to 19 provide a list of unclean birds, including which of these?

Answer: Kites

The whole list of birds is, as mentioned, found in Leviticus 11:13-19 - "These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, the red kite, any kind of black kite, any kind of raven, the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat."

The chapter also goes through lists of mammals, fish, lizards and insects that are considered clean or unclean to eat.
3. Which branch of Levites were responsible for "the care of the most holy things", according to Numbers 4:4?

Answer: Kohathites

Numbers 4:1-4 says, "The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 'Take a census of the Kohathite branch of the Levites by their clans and families. Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting. This is the work of the Kohathites at the tent of meeting: the care of the most holy things.'"

The bulk of the chapter details the different types of tasks assigned to aid the High Priest (Aaron) in his work, but the job had a danger associated with it, as well. Verses 17-20 outline the risk:

"The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 'See that the Kohathite tribal clans are not destroyed from among the Levites. So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry. But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die.'"
4. Korah, the great-grandson of Levi, "became insolent and rose up against Moses", resulting in a rebellion with grave consequences for all the participants. What happened to Korah, Dathan and Abiram (and their families)?

Answer: They were swallowed up by the earth.

Korah, Dathan and Abiram were the first (as the leaders of the rebellion) to face God's wrath. Moses declared that if they died a 'natural' death, then it would show everyone that it was from God. And sure enough, right after he said it, it happened.

Numbers 16:31-33 - "As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community."

Shortly after that, the larger group of followers were burned to death, in verse 35 - "And fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense."

Many people gathered the next day, upset over the 'killing of the Lord's people', and once again, God struck many down for their disobedience, but Aaron (the High Priest) went among them to advocate on their behalf. Verses 48 and 49 - "He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah."
5. There were four kings of the United Kingdom of Israel after the time of the Judges. Which of these kings caused the split into the Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah)?

Answer: King Rehoboam

The splitting of the Kingdom of Israel came through the sins of Solomon, but were realized with his son Rehoboam.

1 Kings 11:9-13 outlines the background: "The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord's command. So the Lord said to Solomon, 'Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.'"

King Rehoboam was given his chance to respond to the request of the nation in 1 Kings 12:4 - "Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you." But his response resulted in a divided kingdom (verses 13, 14) - "The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, he followed the advice of the young men and said, 'My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.'"
6. According to Proverbs 1:7, what is "the beginning of knowledge"?

Answer: The fear of the Lord

The book of Proverbs touches on questions of morality, values, right conduct and the meaning of life, all in the light of wisdom and in relation to God. In the instance of Proverbs 1:7, 'The fear of the Lord' is generally viewed as another way of saying 'submission to the will of God' (although there are different ways of interpreting that idea of 'fear').

The introductory description of Proverbs is outlined in verses 1-7:

"The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young-
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance-
for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
7. After observing the Passover and praying for his disciples, Jesus and his followers crossed over this valley to reach the Garden of Gethsemane. Which valley?

Answer: Kidron Valley

The Kidron Valley mentioned by name eleven times in the Old and New Testament (NIV translation) beginning soon after King David conquered Jerusalem and made it his capital. The first ten times it is mentioned are all in the Old Testament, and the only reference in the New Testament is in John 18:1:

"When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it."
8. Each of the four Gospels of the New Testament tell of Judas betraying Jesus to the chief priests and pharisees, but which one does not mention how Judas identified Jesus with a kiss?

Answer: John

The first two Gospels mention the actual kiss (Matthew and Mark) while the third (Luke) mentions it as though it is about to happen. There is no mention of a betraying kiss at all in the Gospel of John.

Matthew 26:48,49 - "Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: 'The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.' Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, 'Greetings, Rabbi!' and kissed him."

Mark 14:44,45 - "Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: 'The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.' Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him."

Luke 22:47,48 - "While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?'

John 18:2-5 - "Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, 'Who is it you want?'

'Jesus of Nazareth,' they replied.

'I am he,' Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)"
9. In which book of the New Testament, one of the Epistles, does Paul say, "It is written: "'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.'"?

Answer: Romans

When Paul says "It is written", it is a reference to Isaiah 45:23. Here is the greater context of the passage (verses 22-24):

"'Turn to me and be saved,
all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.
By myself I have sworn,
my mouth has uttered in all integrity
a word that will not be revoked:
Before me every knee will bow;
by me every tongue will swear.
They will say of me, "In the Lord alone
are deliverance and strength."'
All who have raged against him
will come to him and be put to shame."

At the beginning of the chapter, Isaiah names Cyrus as the one to whom these words (and those of the whole chapter) are directed. And Cyrus was the king of the Medes and Persians of whom this prophecy spoke over 200 years later.
10. Revelation 3:7 - "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the _____ of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open." What word completes this verse?

Answer: key

'The key of David' is first mentioned in Isaiah 22:22, in a prophecy about Jerusalem:

Verses 20-23 - "In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will become a seat of honor for the house of his father."

Thus the reference in Revelation to the church of Philadelphia. Adding in a little bit of context, here is the following verse in Revelation 3:8 - "I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name."
