Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the eighth plague was unleashed on Egypt, what insect was then removed from the land by a "very strong west wind", according to Exodus 10:19 in the NKJV?

Answer: locusts

The eighth plague unleashed on Egypt was the Plague of Locusts. According to Exodus 10, Egypt was completely covered with locusts. In fact, Verse 15 in the NKJV states the insects "covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened."

After the Pharaoh said he had a change of heart and the Israelites could leave Egypt, the plague came to an end when the LORD "turned a very strong west wind, which took the locusts away and blew them into the Red Sea." After Egypt had been freed of locusts, the Pharaoh announced he had yet another change of heart and would not permit the Israelites to leave Egypt.
2. What leader of the Israelites, as per the NKJV, "took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city?" (Hint: the action took place in the early days as the Israelites were just beginning to move into Canaan, known as the Promise Land.)

Answer: Joshua

Joshua set about five thousand men in ambush on the west side of Ai, prior to the Israelites successfully conquering the city. Details about the conquest can be found in Joshua 8. The previous chapter tells of the Israelites suffering a stinging defeat at Ai due to the fact that Achan defied divine orders. Achan would end up being stoned for his actions, and when Joshua and the Israelites attacked Ai for the second time, they were highly successful.
3. According to Joshua 15:12 in the NKJV, what geographical feature constituted the western border for Judah?

Answer: The Great Sea, or the Mediterranean Sea

The western border of Judah, as documented in Joshua 15:12 in the NKJV, was the Great Sea, aka the Mediterranean Sea. (In the NIV, it states Mediterranean Sea and does not use the term 'Great Sea'.) The passage also states the east border was the Salt Sea (aka the Dead Sea) as far as the mouth of the Jordan.
4. In what Old Testament book do you read about one thousand seven hundred "able men" having oversight on the west side of the Jordan for all the business of the LORD?

Answer: 1 Chronicles

Details about the one thousand seven hundred "able men" having oversight on the west side of the Jordan for all the business of the LORD can be found in 1 Chronicles 26:30-32. At first blush, the question might appear difficult but when things are thought through it is actually easy as out of the four possible answers, it stands to reason 1 Chronicles would be the only book to have such information. Genesis and Exodus are part of the Pentateuch and were written long before the Israelites moved in large numbers into Canaan, known as the Promised Land. Meanwhile, Esther chronicles the exploits of Queen Esther and her cousin in Persia, far removed from the west side of the Jordan.
5. "Those in the west are astonished at his day as those in the east are frightened," is a statement made by a friend of Job in Job 18:20, using the NKJV. What was the name of Job's friend who made the statement?

Answer: Bildad

The statement in Job 18:20 was made by Bildad, one of three friends who visited Job after he was beset with a series of calamities. The two other friends who visited were Eliphaz and Zophar. (A fourth friend, Elihu, visited Job later in the book.)

The statement by Bildad is part of a lengthy passage in which he states the wicked are punished. To put the verse in context, here's how Job 18:20-21 reads in the NKJV: "Those in the west are astonished at his day, as those in the east are frightened. Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him who does not know God."

In Job 19, Job responds to Bildad's statement by stating he has deep faith in his Redeemer.
6. The following verse, containing the word 'west', is from the NKJV: "They shall walk after the LORD. He will roar like a lion. When He roars, then His sons shall come trembling from the west." In what book, written by a minor prophet, do you find this verse?

Answer: Hosea

The verse is from Hosea 11:10, and is part of a passage telling of God's continuing love for Israel. To put the verse in context, here's how Hosea 11:10-11 reads in the NKJV: "'They shall walk after the LORD. He will roar like a lion. When He roars, then His sons shall come trembling from the west; they shall come trembling like a bird from Egypt, like a dove from the land of Assyria. And I will let them dwell in their houses,' says the LORD."

Out of the four possible answers, Hosea is the only one who was a minor prophet. Jeremiah and Ezekiel were major prophets and Ruth was a Moabite woman who was the great grandmother of David.
7. The following verse, containing the direction 'west', is from the NKJV: "And as I was considering, suddenly a male goat came from the west, across the surface of the whole earth, without touching the ground; and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes." The verse smacks of something you would read in Revelation but in actuality it is from the Old Testament.

Answer: True

True. The verse might smack of something you would read in Revelation, but in actuality it's from Daniel 8:5. The verse is part of a complex vision of Daniel involving a ram and a goat. The exact meaning of the vision is explained by Gabriel in Daniel 8:15-25, with the ram representing Media and Persia and the goat representing Greece.
8. The following verse containing the word 'west', is from a book in the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament, using the NKJV: "And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south." In what book do you find such horrific details?

Answer: Zechariah

The verse in question is from Zechariah 14:4 and is part of a passage referring to the day of the LORD.

To put the verse in context, here's how Zechariah 14:1-4 reads in the NKJV: "Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, and your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; the city shall be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations,
as He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley;
half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south."

I suspect for most players there is a fifty per cent chance of getting this question correct as the question mentions the verse is from a book in the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament. Both Zechariah and Zephaniah are from the Minor Prophet section while Isaiah and Ezekiel are considered major prophets.
9. The following quote is from Matthew 8:11 in the NKJV: "And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven." Who made the statement?

Answer: Jesus

The statement was made by Jesus moments after He healed an unnamed centurion's seriously-ill servant without even seeing him in person. The account of Christ's miraculous healing of the servant is contained in Matthew 8:5-13.

According to the passage in the NKJV, the centurion begged Jesus to heal his servant who was "paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." However, when Jesus said He would visit the servant to heal him, the centurion said He didn't have to do such a thing.

In Verse 8, the centurion is quoted as saying, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed." When Jesus heard this, Scripture says He "marvelled" at the tremendous faith of the centurion, stating "I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!" Christ then goes on to sate: "And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven."

The passage concludes by stating the centurion's servant was "healed that same hour."
10. In one of the four Gospels, Jesus is quoted in the NKJV as saying, "For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." In what Gospel do you find Christ's statement? (Be careful with this one, as Christ made a similar statement in one of the other Gospels, but without making mention of the directions 'east' and 'west'.)

Answer: Matthew

The statement by Jesus is from Matthew 24:27. It's part of a passage which records the conversation between Jesus and His disciples pertaining to the signs of the times and the end of the age.

In Luke 17:24 Jesus makes a similar statement but does not mention the directions 'east' and 'west'. That verse in the NKJV states: "For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day."
