Hannah was married to Elkanah and for the longest time she was unable to conceive. This, even though Elkanah was also married to Penniniah who was the mother of an unstated number of sons and daughters. 1 Samuel 1:7 tells of Peninnah belittling Hannah for being unable to bear children with Hannah becoming depressed.

However, after fervently praying to God, Hannah gave birth to Samuel, who would become a noted judge of Israel. 1 Samuel 2:18 tells of God blessing Hannah with more children after Samuel's birth. In fact, the verse states she bore three sons and two daughters.

3. The man who is credited with writing Chapter 31 of Proverbs has a name that begins and ends in the same letter. What is the man's name?

Answer: Lemuel

Lemuel is the correct answer. However, no one knows for certain who Lemuel was. Some believe he was actually Hezekiah and Lemuel was a pen name. Others believe he was Solomon. According to Wikipedia, Lemuel means 'Devoted to God'.

4. Esther was the queen of Persia. However, before she became queen, she had a different name that started and ended with the same letter. What was Esther's original name?

Answer: Hadassah

Esther's original name was Hadassah, as per Esther 2:7. The verse in the NKJV states both of Esther's parents died and she was adopted by Mordecai who raised her "as his own daughter." Later in life, Hadassah would become known as Esther. After Esther ascended to become queen of the Persian empire, she and Mordecai would play a key role in preventing Haman from carrying out an evil plan to kill all the Jews.

5. A wife of David and the mother of Adonijah, a man who almost became king of Israel, also has a name that begins and ends with the same letter. What is the woman's name?

Answer: Haggith

Haggith was the mother of Adonijah and one of a number of wives of David. 1 Kings 1:5 tells of Adonijah attempting to become king in a bloodless coup when his father David was elderly and frail. However, Bathsheba and Nathan (another name that begins and ends with the same letter) pulled strings behind the scenes to ensure Solomon would become king.

Not much is known about Haggith, however, as she is mentioned in passing reference.

6. According to Matthew 12:24 in the NKJV, the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out demons with the assistance of the ruler of demons. The name of the ruler of demons was Beelzebub, a name that begins and ends with the letter 'B'.

Answer: True

True. In Matthew 12:24, in the NKJV, the Pharisees are quoted as saying Jesus was casting out demons with the power of Beelzebub, "the ruler of the demons." In other words, Beelzebub is used as another name for Satan.

Other references to Beelzebub can be found in 24 Matthew 12:27, Mark 3:22 and Luke 11:15-19.

7. A member of the early church in Rome also had a name that begins and ends with the same letter. What was the man's name, as per Romans 16:9?

Answer: Stachys

Stachys is the correct answer. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned in only Romans 16:9. The verse in the NKJV simply states, "Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys, my beloved."

Tradition holds Stachys served as the second bishop of Byzantium, from AD 38 to 54. According to Biblestudytools.com, the name Stachys means 'spike', or an 'ear of corn'.

8. Luke 7:11-17 tells of Jesus raising a widow's son from the dead and, while no names are given for the son and his mother, Scripture states the miracle took place in a community that has a name that begins and ends with the same letter. What's the name of the community?

Answer: Nain

It was at Nain where Jesus miraculously raised a widow's son from the dead. The account is found in Luke 7:11-17 and it is one of my favorites. Nain is a small community fourteen kilometers (8.7 miles) south of Nazareth. In the entire Bible, the community is mentioned in only this passage.

9. A worker in the early church whose name begins and ends with the same letter was deported from Rome because he was a Jew. What was the worker's name?

Answer: Aquila

Acts 18:2 tells of Aquila leaving Italy when Claudius commanded all the Jews to leave. According to the verse, Aquila was originally from Pontus, a city in present day Turkey. It was after the deportation that Aquila and his wife Priscilla met up with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. Aquila and Priscilla, similar to Paul, were tentmakers. Paul speaks highly of the husband-wife team, as they played a major role in helping spread the Gospel message.

10. In Matthew 20:16, Jesus is quoted as saying in the NKJV, "the last will be first, and the first last." With that background, the last question in this quiz involves the first woman whose name starts and ends with the same letter. What is the name of the woman who is known as "the mother of all living?"

Answer: Eve

Eve, of course, is the correct answer. According to Genesis 3:20 in the NKJV, Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was "the mother of all living". Eve was the mother of Cain, Abel and Seth as well as a number of other sons and daughters who are not named in Scripture.
