Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one was the mother of Jesus?

Answer: Mary

Mary, of course, is the correct answer. She was the young woman who gave birth to Jesus even though she had not been intimate with a man. Mary was engaged to Joseph at the time she became pregnant and the two became husband and wife.

Luke 1:29-33 tells of the angel Gabriel announcing to Mary she would give birth to Jesus, even though she was a virgin. In the verses in the NKJV, Gabriel states: "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one lived in Bethany and was the industrious sister of Mary and Lazarus?

Answer: Martha

Martha was the industrious sister of Mary and Lazarus. While Martha was industrious, Mary is best known for being insightful. The two acquired the reputations as a result of their actions in Luke 10:38-42.

The passage tells of Jesus being in the home of the two sisters, with Martha busy preparing things for the guests while Mary sat attentively at Christ's feet listening to Him. Martha became frustrated with what was happening and asked Jesus to request Mary to come and help her.

To Martha's surprise, Jesus responded by saying: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one is the name Naomi gave to herself after the deaths of her husband and her two sons?

Answer: Mara

After the deaths of her husband Elimelech and her two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, Naomi declared she had a new name -- Mara. Scripture tells of Naomi proclaiming her new name after she returned to Bethlehem, where she had originally lived.

When the people of Bethlehem expressed excitement at Naomi's return, she had a blunt message for them: "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?"

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Mara means 'bitter'.
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one, according to John 12:3, anointed Christ with flagrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair?

Answer: Mary

Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, is the correct answer. John 12:1-8 tells of Mary taking "a pound of very costly oil of spikenard" and anointing the feet of Jesus and then wiping His feet with her hair.

The passage goes on to tell of Judas Iscariot being upset with Mary's display of affection, claiming the fragrant oil could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor. Verse 6 then tells of Judas Iscariot's true motives: "This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it."
5. Out of the four placenames below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one, according to Joshua 19:11, is a community in the southwestern territory of Zebulun?

Answer: Maralah

Using the KJV, NKJV and the NIV Bibles, Maralah is mentioned only in Joshua 19:11. It was a community in land allocated to the Tribe of Zebulun when the Israelites moved into Canaan, known as the Promised Land.

For the record, Mar del Plata is a city in Argentina and Markham is a city near Toronto, Ontario while Marawi is the capital of Lanao del Sur province in the Philippines.
6. Fill in the missing word from John 3:7, part of a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus: "Do not ________ that I said to you, 'You must be born again'." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'MAR'.)

Answer: marvel

The missing word in John 3:7 in the NKJV is 'marvel'. In other words, the verse quotes Jesus as telling Nicodemus: "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again'."

Nicodemus was a Pharisee who met with Jesus at night and confessed he regarded Him as a teacher from God "for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."

Immediately after Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus was from God, Christ told him he must be born again.

For further details, see John 3:1-21.
7. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one, according to Esther 1:14, was one of seven highly ranked officials working for king Ahasuerus?

Answer: Marsena

Marsena was one of seven highly ranked officials working for Ahasuerus, king of Persia. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.) In addition to Marsena, the six other highly ranked officials were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres and Memucan. For details, see Esther 1:13-15.
8. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one, according to 1 Chronicles 2:42, was a descendant of Caleb?

Answer: Mareshah

Mareshah is the correct answer but little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference in 1 Chronicles 2:42. The verse simply states Mareshah was the son of Ziph and the father of Hebron, as part of the genealogy of Caleb.

Mareshah is also the name of a community where a battle was waged in Biblical times, as per 2 Chronicles 14:10.
9. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one was the first to see Christ after His resurrection, as per the Gospel of John?

Answer: Mary Magdalene

According to John 20:11-18, the first person to see Jesus after His resurrection was Mary Magdalene. She is known as Mary Magdalene to distinguish herself from other women in the New Testament who are called Mary. It is believed she came from Magdala, a town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, hence the nickname Mary Magadalene.

According to Mark 16:9 and Luke 8:2, Jesus had miraculously driven seven demons out of Mary.
10. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one is the writer of one of the four Gospels in the New Testament?

Answer: Mark

Mark was the writer of the second Gospel, in order of appearance, in the New Testament. Mark, also known as John Mark, was a worker in the early church who was a cousin of Barnabas.

The Gospel of Mark consists of sixteen chapters and contains a number of details that are not featured in the three other Gospels -- Matthew, Luke and John.
