Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Genesis 19:15 tells of angels urging a man to "hurry" and take his wife and his two daughters to escape the punishment that was to be inflicted upon the town they lived in. What was the man's name?

Answer: Lot

The correct answer is Lot. Genesis 19:12-29 in the NKJV tells of two angels urging Lot to "hurry" and flee Sodom with his unnamed wife and his two unnamed daughters. The angels explained that the city, as well as nearby Gomorrah, would be destroyed by God due to the wickedness of the people.

The angels also told Lot that when his family fled, no one was to look back. The passage states Lot's wife refused to follow the divine orders and when she looked back at the destruction of the city she was turned into a pillar of salt.
2. According to Genesis 45:9 in the NKJV, a man in Egypt told his brothers to, "hurry and go up to my father." What was the name of the man who told his brothers to hurry?

Answer: Joseph

Joseph, of course, is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Joseph's eleven brothers visited him in Egypt seeking food during a famine in Canaan, this even though they did not realize it was Joseph they were dealing with. It was during a second visit by the brothers that Joseph revealed his identity and urged them to "hurry and go up to my father" Jacob and return with him to Egypt.

See Genesis 45:1-28 for details.
3. Exodus 5:13 in the NKJV tells of taskmasters forcing slaves to "hurry" and "fulfill your work, your daily quota." In what country did this happen?

Answer: Egypt

Exodus 5:13 in the NKJV tells of the situation in Egypt when taskmasters forced the Hebrew slaves to "hurry" to "fulfill your work, your daily quota," in making bricks. This even though the Egyptians had stopped supplying the Hebrews with straw to assist in the brick making process. In other words, the slaves had to collect their own straw and make the same number of bricks as before.

The situation became extremely burdensome for the slaves, but they received no mercy from the Pharaoh. It would set the stage for the Israelites to stage a mass exodus out of Egypt and to travel to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.
4. According to Esther 6:10, a king told a man to "hurry, take the robe and the horse, as you have suggested, and do so for Mordecai the Jew who sits within the king's gate!" Who received such instructions from the king?

Answer: Haman

Ahasuerus, king of Persia, is the one who told Haman to "hurry, take the robe and the horse, as you have suggested, and do so for Mordecai the Jew who sits within the king's gate! " (In the NIV Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.)

It's a bit of a long story, but Haman had approached Ahasuerus when he was asked, "What shall be done for the man whom the king delights to honor?"

Haman thought he was the man Ahasuerus intended to honor and provided the king with information on how he wanted to be recognized. In short, he said the king should present the man he intended to honor with a royal robe and a royal horse and then have the man parade through the city so he could be acknowledged by the people.

To Haman's complete amazement, the king then responded by telling him to "hurry" and present the robe and the horse to Mordecai, the man Haman despised.

See Esther 6:1-14 for details.
5. A foreign king who ruled over Israel for three years told his troops to rise early "and rush upon the city" and when the people come out against you, "you may then do to them as you find opportunity." What was the king's name, as per Judges 9:33?

Answer: Abimelech

Abimelech, a foreign king who ruled over Israel for three years, told his soldiers to "rush upon the city" of Shechem and do whatever they wanted with the people, as per Judges 9:33.

While Abimelech would be successful in his ruthless conquest of Shechem, it would be the beginning of the end for him. Chapter 9 goes on to tell of an unnamed woman in a tower dropping a millstone and striking him in the head. A short while later, the much feared leader would be dead.
6. According to Judges 20:37, soldiers from eleven of Israel's tribes staged an ambush and "quickly rushed upon Gibeah"... "and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword." What tribe was crushed by the other eleven tribes?

Answer: Tribe of Benjamin

The Tribe of Benjamin was involved in a bloody civil war against the other eleven tribes, as per Judges 20:1-48. The war erupted after the concubine of an unnamed Levite man was brutally sexually abused and killed in Gilbeah, part of Benjamite territory.

The passage tells of soldiers from the eleven other tribes rushing upon Gilbeah and striking the "whole city with the edge of the sword", as per the NKJV. The chapter ends with more details of the crushing defeat of the Benjamites.
7. According to 1 Samuel 14:32, after the Israelites conquered a Philistine town they "rushed on the spoil" taking sheep, oxen, and calves eating the meat with the blood still in it, contrary to divine instructions. Who was the king of Israel at the time?

Answer: Saul

Saul was the king of Israel when his soldiers "rushed on the spoil", taking sheep, oxen, and calves during the conquest of the Philistine town of Michmash. According to 1 Samuel 14:32, the blood was still in the meat when it was consumed by the soldiers.

It's one of those long and a bit complicated stories in the Bible, but I'll try to make it as simple and brief as possible. Previously, Saul had made a foolish oath which would have resulted in the death of his son Jonathan and by the end of the day, God ceased communicating with Saul.

See 1 Samuel 14:24-46 for details.
8. The following verse, containing the word 'rush', is from Isaiah 17:13 in the NKJV: "The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters; but God will rebuke them and they will flee far away, and be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, like a rolling thing before the whirlwind." Who was Isaiah?

Answer: The son of Amoz and a prophet of God

Isaiah was the son of Amoz and a prophet of God who prophesied in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. He is also the writer of the Old Testament book that bears his name.

Isaiah 17:13 is part of a passage in which God issues a proclamation against both Syria and Israel.
9. New Testament Scripture tells of a sound coming from heaven, "as of a rushing mighty wind", and filling the house the followers of Jesus were in. In what book do you find this account?

Answer: Acts

The verse is from Acts 2:2 and is part of a passage telling of the coming of the Holy spirit, or the Day of Pentecost. According to Acts 2:1-4 in the NKJV, the arrival of the Holy Spirit was marked by "a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind," and it filled the house occupied by believers.

The passage goes on to state, "there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them." Suddenly, the people were "filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
10. Acts 19:29 in the NKJV tells of a whole city "filled with confusion" resulting in people rushing in to the theatre and seizing two of Paul's travel companions. What two workers in the early church were seized in Ephesus after the people rushed into the theatre?

Answer: Gaius and Aristarchus

Gaius and Aristarchus were seized in Ephesus after opponents of the early church "rushed into the theatre with one accord," as per Acts 19:29 in the NKJV. According to Scripture, the people were stirred up by Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana. (In the NIV, it states Demetrius made silver shrines of Artemis.)

According to Verse 34, the people were so worked up they shouted for about two hours, "Great is Diana of the Ephesians!"

Miraculously, an unnamed city clerk was able to calm down the people and Gaius and Aristarchus were released apparently unharmed.
