Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who asked God: "Am I my brother's keeper"?

Answer: Cain

(Genesis 4:9) Adam's sons Cain and Abel were farmers; Cain tilled the soil and Abel kept sheep. When they both made offerings to God, for some reason the Lord preferred Abel's, which annoyed Cain. As a result Cain slew Abel in the field. The Lord asked Cain "Where is Abel thy brother?", to which Cain replied "I know not; am I my brother's keeper?"
2. Who told God: "... but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue"?

Answer: Moses

(Exodus 4:10) God was very keen to have Moses be the leader of the Israelites in getting them out of their Egyptian captivity, getting him to do miracles like turning the snake to a rod, and back. Moses said he was no good at public speaking. Eventually God gave in and said Moses could have his brother Aaron to be his mouthpiece. "And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people." (Exodus 4:16)
3. God instructed who thus: "Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female..."?

Answer: Noah

(Genesis 7:2) I find this instruction to Noah rather baffling. "Clean" beasts were kosher, so perhaps they were to ensure that Noah's descendants had a source of food when the flood was over. Or during the voyage? It is in the preceding chapter that we find the familiar "two of every sort shalt thou bring ...".
4. God said to whom: "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, ... and offer him there for a burnt offering..."?

Answer: Abraham

(Genesis 22:2) This grisly instruction was apparently just to test Abraham's faith. Although it says Isaac was Abraham's only son, earlier in the history(Genesis 16) Sarai, Abram's wife, gave him her Egyptian handmaid Hagar who had a son Ishmael by him. That was before they changed their names to Sarah and Abraham, so maybe for that reason his earlier son didn't count.
5. Who resignedly said, "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away"?

Answer: Job

(Job 1:21) Job was doing very nicely until this news arrived:
* The Sabeans slew his servants and stole his oxen and asses.
* The fire of God burned up his sheep and more servants. (Presumably they were struck by lightning).
* The Chaldeans stole his camels and killed yet more of his servants.
* A great wind hit the house where his sons and daughters were eating, and the sons were all killed.

Just one of those days.
6. Thus spake who to the Lord "...Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon"?

Answer: Joshua

(Joshua 10:12-13) "...and the sun stood still and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies." So that's how Joshua and his Israeli army defeated the armies of all the kings of the Amorites. One of the more inexplicable of Biblical miracles.
7. Who set this riddle: "Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness"?

Answer: Samson

(Judges 14:14) This is the strange tale of Samson who wanted to marry a Philistine woman, and on the way there killed a lion with his bare hands, and later found a swarm of bees and honey in the lion's carcass. Thirty of his wife's companions turned up at the wedding celebration wanting gifts, and Samson set them this riddle, saying if they solved it he would give them all sheets and sets of garments. Samson's wife gave away the answer eventually, but came to no good end as a result.
8. Who promised "...for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge"?

Answer: Ruth

(Ruth 1:16) Naomi with her husband Elimelech and two sons went to Moab on account of famine in Judah. The two sons married two Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. Naomi's husband and sons all died leaving her with two daughters in law, whom she entreated to return to their families. Orpah returned, but Ruth stayed with Naomi with that famous promise.
9. Who lamented "The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places; how are the mighty fallen"?

Answer: David

(2 Samuel 1:19) This is the lamentation of David on learning of the defeat and death of King Saul and Jonathan, Saul's son and David's particular friend.
10. Whose beloved sang, "I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valley"?

Answer: Solomon

(Song of Solomon 2:1) This is the first line of a beautiful poem expressing the love of a Shulamite woman for Solomon, later interpreted as the mutual love of Christ and his church. Steinbeck gave one of his characters in "The Grapes of Wrath" the Christian name Rose of Sharon.
