Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In St. Luke 15 Jesus told a parable of a woman who had ten objects and lost one. What was the object that she would seek diligently for? KJV

Answer: one piece of silver

When the scribes and Pharisees murmured against Jesus for receiving and eating with sinners Jesus told them three parables relating to 'the lost'. In the second parable Jesus pointed out that if a woman had ten pieces of silver and lost one she would search for it diligently and on finding it she would call her neighbours together to rejoice with her.

His punchline was that angels rejoice whenever a sinner repents.
2. Where was Jesus when he told the parable of the sower and the seed?

Answer: in a ship

According to Matthew 13:1-3 Jesus went out of the house and sat by the seaside. As usual, great crowds gathered to him so he went into a ship and sat and the whole multitude stood on the seashore and he spoke to them in parables saying, "Behold a sower went forth to sow." According to the parable seeds fell on different types of ground. Only the seed that fell on good ground produced fruit.
3. In the parable of the ten virgins what did the wise virgins have that the foolish neglected to bring with them?

Answer: oil in their vessels

In the parable of the ten virgins the foolish virgins took their lamps but took no oil with them. As a result, during the long wait for the bridegroom who had tarried their lamps went out and they had no oil to rekindle them. The wise virgins had just enough to fill their own lamps so the foolish had to hurry off to buy. On their return they found the door locked and they were unable to take part in the bridal festivities. (Matthew 15:1-13)
4. Which seed did Jesus compare the kingdom of heaven to in a parable told in Luke 13? KJV

Answer: a mustard seed

Jesus taught that the kingdom of heaven could be likened to a mustard seed which was thrown by a man into his garden. This little seed grew and became a great tree and the birds of the air were able to live in its branches. (Luke 13:18-19)
5. How did the elder son respond when he realized that his brother had returned and a feast was made for him?

Answer: He was angry.

The parable of the prodigal son is recorded in Luke 15:11-32. The younger son demanded his inheritance and left home for a far place. He ended up wasting all his living and had to take care of swine to survive. He came to himself and decided to return home as a hired servant.
His father was overjoyed to receive him again as a son but his elder brother was angered by the fact that his father had killed the fatted calf for his brother who had proven himself so unworthy. The parable is all about God's love for unworthy humanity.
6. In the parable of the talents the amount of talents given to each servant was based on his love for others.

Answer: False

Matthew 25:14-30 outlines the parable of the talents. According to verse 15 the master gave to each servant a different number of talents based on his ability.
7. Which item was not a gift that the prodigal son received from his father?

Answer: a bottle of cologne

On his arrival home the prodigal son was given the best robe, a ring and a pair of shoes. There is no account of him receiving a bottle of cologne. (Luke 15:22)
8. One of Jesus' parables told of a man who found something hidden in a field and sold all that he had to buy the field. What was hidden in the field? KJV

Answer: a pearl

Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to a merchant who was seeking for goodly pearls. When he finally found a pearl of great price he sold all his possessions and bought it. The lesson? Nothing should be too difficult for us to give up in our quest for eternal life. (Matt 13:44-46)
9. Who did Jesus say planted tares among the wheat?

Answer: An enemy

Matthew 13 records a parable of a man who sowed good seed in his field but while he slept an enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat. His servants wanted to go and gather up the tares but he told them to allow the tares to grow along with the wheat until the day of harvest. At that time, he would allow the reapers to do the separation. (Matt 13:24-30)
10. Who was the first person to pass by the injured man in the parable of the good Samaritan? KJV

Answer: a priest

The first person to pass by the injured man was a priest. The second was a Levite. After the Levite passed by on the other side the Samaritan came and had compassion on him. He brought him to an inn and ministered to him. He then paid the inn keeper to take care of him. There was no mention of a doctor. (Luke 10:30-35)
