Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Judith is a history, and its historical accuracy has been verified by several archeological discoveries.

Answer: False

The book is most often described as a "religious novel." The introduction to Judith in the Catholic New American Bible says, "Any attempt to read the book directly against the backdrop of Jewish history . . . is bound to fail." It is not in the genre of the histories like Kings and Chronicles. All quotes in this quiz will come from the NAB.
2. Why did King Nebuchadnezzer fall into a rage and vow to avenge himself on Judea?

Answer: They would not go with him to war

They turned his envoys away, refusing to take him seriously. In the book, Nebuchadnezzer seeks vengeance on all of the nations who refuse to come out to go to war with him (1:11).
3. Achior advised Holofernes, commander of the Assyrian forces, that he could not defeat the Jews unless what happened?

Answer: The Jews sinned against God

"But if they are not a guilty nation," said Achior, "then your lordship should keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them" (5:21).
4. Did Holofernes take Achior's advice regarding the defeat of the Jews?

Answer: No

"Who are you, Achior," he asked, "to tell us not to fight against the Israelites?" (6:2). Holofernes said there was no god beside Nebuchadnezzer, and that his force would wipe the Jews from the earth. Achior was then seized and delivered over to the Israelites in Bethulia, where Holofernes vowed he would die with the rest of the Israelites.
5. What, at the advice of the Edomites and the Ammonites, did Holofernes do to the city of Bethulia?

Answer: Cut off its water supply

His troops surrounded the city for 34 days, cutting off the water at the base of the mountain, until the people began to faint. They went to the leader of the city, Uzziah, and begged him to surrender. Uzziah urged them to wait five more days, to see if God would deliver them. If not, he promised to turn the city over to the Assyrians.
6. Who was the leader of Bethulia, whom Judith upbraided for issuing God an ultimatum?

Answer: Uzziah

When Judith heard that Uzziah had promised to surrender in five days, she criticized him for testing God and placing conditions on the Lord. She then took matters into her own hands to prevent the surrender, leaving with her maid to infiltrate the camp of the enemy Holofernes.
7. Judith was a virgin.

Answer: False

Judith was a widow; her husband is already deceased at the beginning of the book, having died of sunstroke in the fields (8:3). When the siege of the city began, Judith had been a widow for three years. She never again remarried.
8. From what son of Jacob was Judith descended?

Answer: Simeon

See 8:1-2. Judith prayed to God before leaving the city and referred to her "forefather Simeon," who avenged the rape of his sister Dinah. Though Jacob was upset at Simeon's revenge, the Book of Judith presents it as having been the will of God. Esau was Jacob's brother, Isaac his father, and Abraham his grandfather.
9. Judith said that God's power does not depend on either numbers or what?

Answer: Stalwart Men

Rather, she said, "You are the God of the lowly, the helper of the oppressed, the supporter of the weak, the protector of the forsaken, the savior of those without hope" (9:11).
10. Judith lied to Holofernes in order to save her people.

Answer: True

Judith said she would pray to God to determine whether the Jews had sinned and that she would then tell Holofernes so that he could conquer them in their weakness. Instead, she prayed to God to help her to deliver her people (12:8).
11. Holofernes promised that if Judith honored her word to him, he would worship her God.

Answer: True

"If you do as you have said, your God will be my God" (11:23).
12. When Holofernes summoned Judith to come drink with him, she refused to appear.

Answer: False

She deceived him, agreeing to appear and saying, "Whatever is pleasing to him I will promptly do. This will be a joy for me till the days of my death" (12:14). She even told Holofernes, "I will gladly drink, my lord, for at no time since I was born have I ever enjoyed life as much as I do today" (12:18).
13. How did Judith assassinate Holofernes?

Answer: She beheaded him while he was drunk

Holofernes drank more wine that day "than he had ever drunk on a single day in his life" (12:20). In his drunkenness, he sent for Judith to seduce her. But by the time she arrived, he was passed out. She beheaded him with two strokes of the sword, and took his head back to the city in her bag.
14. When was The Book of Judith composed?

Answer: 2nd - 1st century BC

It is thought that the original was written in Hebrew, but only a Greek text survives. The book was included in the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the scriptures used by the Hellenistic Jews and the early Church. However, the Palestinian Jews never accepted it as part of the Bible, and its inspiration has long been debated among Christians. St. Jerome translated it for his Vulgate only under pressure, and the Protestants and modern day Jews exclude it from their Bible canons.
15. In Chapter 15, there is a hymn honoring Judith. To whom is this hymn sometimes applied in the Catholic liturgy?

Answer: Mary

"You are the glory of Jerusalem, the surpassing joy of Israel, you are the splendid boast of your people..." (15:9).
