Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What book of the Bible contains the best-known passage about times and seasons?

Answer: Ecclesiastes

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot" (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 NIV). It gives several different times and seasons, like the time to be born and the time to die mentioned above, and many others.

The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon and talks about how the things of the world are meaningless. At the end of the book it says that if a person "fears God and keeps his commandments", then he or she has fulfilled "the whole duty of man".

2. Psalm 84:5-7 talks about pilgrims passing through the "Valley of Baca". Which season's rains bring pools to this valley?

Answer: Autumn

This Psalm is attributed to the sons of Korah and its main subject is longing for and enjoying the house of God.

Verses 5-7 though describe the journey and reward of those who set their hearts to trust God and follow him all their lives. It describes them travelling through a place called the Valley of Baca. This is a metaphorical location that describes going through difficult times in life, as "Valley of Baca" literally means "Valley of Weeping". However, the writers describe this valley experience as a time when life and refreshment come in spite of the difficulties. These pilgrims trust and rely on God so much that instead of the valley being dry, barren and sorrowful, springs of water appear and after the dry summer the refreshing autumn rains come to soak the parched ground. This would be a real encouragement for readers going through a difficult time in their lives to keep trusting God and looking to him to keep them strong.

3. According to Leviticus 26: 1-6, what were the criteria that God set forth for His people to be able to enjoy increased harvests with plenty to eat and peace in their land, along with the removal of evil beasts and enemies of His people?

Answer: They could have no other gods and had to do what God commanded

"Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. IF YE WALK IN MY STATUTES, AND KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, AND DO THEM; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword."

4. In the 24th chapter of Matthew, Jesus talks about the tribulation that is to come followed by His second coming. In speaking about the tribulation, Jesus, in verse 20, says people should pray their flight is not on the Sabbath or during a particular season. What is the season?

Answer: Winter

The correct answer is winter. The 24th chapter of Matthew has captured the imaginations of readers for centuries with many evangelical Christians believing signs of the 'end times' have started to unfold. According to the 24th chapter, some of the signs are the rise of false prophets, kingdom rising against kingdom, famine, pestilences and earthquakes.

To put the 20th verse in context, here's how Matthew 24:15-21 reads in the NIV Bible: "'So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel -- let the reader understand -- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now -- and never to be equaled again.'"

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the abomination that causes desolation literally means "the abomination that makes desolate." The notes go on to state the prophecy echoes Daniel -- 9:27, 11:31, and 12:11.

5. In the New International Version, which season does the second chapter of the Song of Solomon say is past?

Answer: Winter

"My lover spoke and said to me, "Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth..." (Song of Solomon 2:10-12).

The song of Solomon relates the passionate story of two lovers. Jewish scholars consider it to be an allegory of God's love for Israel. Some Christians believe it illustrates the relationship of Christ to his bride, the church.

6. Acts Chapter 27 recounts a ill-fated sea voyage carrying the apostle Paul to Rome along the coast of Asia. This voyage started, perhaps, in late summer, but became so treacherous they considered wintering in the harbor of what island?

Answer: Crete

"When considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, since even the fast was already over, Paul began to admonish them, and said to them, 'Men, I perceive that the voyage will certainly be with damage and great loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.' But the centurion was more persuaded by the pilot and the captain of the ship than by what was being said by Paul. Because the harbor was not suitable for wintering, the majority reached a decision to put out to sea from there, if somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete, facing southwest and northwest, and spend the winter there" (Acts 27:9-12, New American Standard Version).

They never reached this port because they were caught in a horrific storm that drove them through treacherous seas for many days, ending with the ship breaking up off the shores of the island of Malta. Although the ship was lost everyone aboard made it safely to shore.

7. There is a time and a season for everything. No one knew that more than the author of Ecclesiastes. In 3:1-8 (New International Version) he listed various things in life in pairs. Can you find one of his pairs in the list below?

Answer: Scatter, gather

The full line of the correct answer is "a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them". The other pairs are "a time to tear and a time to mend", "a time to weep and a time to laugh", "a time for war and a time for peace", "a time to search and a time to give up" as well as "a time to be born and a time to die".

This question was created using the NIV.

8. After all the Old Testament teachings concerning the observation of the Sabbath, the year of Jubilee, the three times per year that Jewish males were required to make pilgrimage to Jerusalem and many other occasions of worship, can you tell me WHY the apostle Paul spoke out AGAINST such observations, in Galatians chapter 4?

Answer: all of these reasons

The entire fourth chapter of Galatians addresses the problem that the apostle Paul had with his fellow Jewish citizens. Many of them were strict adherents to the Law and rejected the Christian belief that Jesus was the Son of God and had, as such, removed the need for such observations.

Paul, a Benjamite of the lineage of Israel (Jacob), believed that the Christ, whom he accepted as Messiah, was indeed born of woman (see verse 4), and was attempting to convey his beliefs to his fellow Jews.

The days spoken of here include the Jewish Sabbaths. Paul was concerned that ritual observation of these days was used to replace true understanding.

The months correspond to the new moons and are closely related to the "times" spoken of in the text.

The times are for the annual Jewish festivals. Three times a year (the feasts of Dedication, Passover and Tabernacles), Jewish males were required to attend certain festivals in Jerusalem.

The years represent Sabbatical years, including the year of Jubilee. The Jews, Paul taught, were observing what he believed to be an obsolete system of Jewish Law. He taught that grace was superior to the law, and as a result of his teachings many of the Jews rejected Paul himself out of hand.

9. The book of Zechariah predicts the coming of the Messiah more than any other Old Testament book with the exception of Isaiah. Near the end of Zechariah, he predicts waters flowing out of Jerusalem both in summer and winter. What kind of waters are they?

Answer: Living waters

The Bible states in Zechariah 14:8,9: "And it shall be in that day, that LIVING WATERS shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea; in summer and winter it shall be. And the Lord shall be king over all the earth; in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one."

Christians believe that these verses predict the reign of Christ over the whole earth when His throne will be established in the holy city of Jerusalem. The waters are in all likelihood both physical and spiritual. The living waters will feed both Israel, and the world. The former sea is the Dead Sea and the hinder sea is the Mediterranean Sea.

10. After the Israelites entered the promised land they went through a time when they were ruled by judges. Who was the last judge recorded in Judges 16 of the NIV?

Answer: Samson

Samson's story ended when he brought the building down on the Philistines, killing over 3,000 Philistines and himself. He led Israel for 20 years. His story can be found in Judges 13-16. The five chapters after Samson's death tell of several things that happened in Israel but never tells of a Judge. The book of Judges has 21 chapters.
